Plural of nouns - ( Plural dos substantivos) O plural dos substantivos possui como regra geral o acréscimo de “s”. Car (carro) – cars (carros) / Boy (garoto) – boys (garotos) / Book (livro) – books (livros) Existem, no entanto, algumas exceções: 1- Se o substantivo terminar em “y”, precedido de consoante, tira-se o “y” e acrescenta-se “ies”. Butterfly (borboleta) – butterflies (borboletas)/ City (cidade) – cities (cidades)/ Baby (bebê) – babies (bebês) 2- Plural Irregular terminado em -ves: em treze dos substantivos que terminam em -f ou -fe trocam-se essas letras por -ves: calf - calves (bezerros) elf - elves (elfos, duendes) half - halves (metades) leaf - leaves (folhas) life - lives (vidas) knife - knives (facas) loaf - loaves (pães de forma) self - selves (egos) sheaf - sheaves (feixes) shelf - shelves (prateleiras) thief - thieves (ladrões) wife - wives (esposas) wolf - wolves (lobos) 3- Nos substantivos terminados em “s, sh, ch, x, z, o”, acrescenta-se “es” para formar o plural. Glass (copo) – glasses (copos)/ Brush (escova) – brushes (escovas)/Beach (praia) – beaches (praias) Box (caixa) – boxes (caixas)/Topaz (topázio) – topazes (topázios)/Tomato (tomate) – tomatoes (tomates) São exceções desta regra: Photo (foto) – photos (fotos)/Piano (piano) – pianos (pianos)/ Kilo (quilo) – kilos (quilos)/ Monarch (monarquia) – monarchs (monarquias)/Patriarch (patriarca) – patriarchs (patriarcas) Stomach (estômago) – stomachs (estômagos) 4- Os substantivos com o final man no singular mudam para men no plural. Man (homem) – men (homens)/Woman (mulher) – women (mulheres) Mailman (carteiro) – mailmen (carteiros) 5- Estes substantivos com “oo” no singular, mudam para “ee” no plural. Foot (pé) – feet (pés)/Tooth (dente) – teeth (dentes) Existem também alguns substantivos que apresentam a mesma forma para o singular e para o plural.
