Consider this excerpt, taken from “Half a Life”, by Vidiadhar Surajprasad Naipaul: 
"He went by ship. And everything about the journey so frightened him - the size of his own country, 
the crowds in the port, the number of ships in the harbor, the confidence of the people on the ship - 
that he found himself unwilling to speak, at first out of pure worry, and then, when he discovered that 
silence brought him strength, out of policy".

This quote is thus so important because it shows the seed of self-doubt that has been planted in
Wilie's mind a characteristic that defines him throughout much of the novel and create his lack of
confidence. Furthermore, this quote shows his lack of exposure to the world, which we also see
when he finds out that he doesn't know about world politics.
O termo “literatura” é de origem latina e se refere à arte de escrever, ao que corresponde às letras. 
Literatura, então, representa o conjunto de obras, escritos e visões que uma determinada sociedade 
produz e se identifica.
Disserte sobre as primeiras obras consideradas literatura em nossa sociedade ocidental e aponte em 
que se distinguem da tradição literária atual.

Minha resposta
As primeiras obras consideradas literatura em nossa sociedade ocidental foram a Ilíada e em
seguida a Odisseia. A Literatura Ocidental surgiu na Grécia antiga por meio das primeiras
dramaturgias e poemas épicos onde os gregos criavam peças e aventuras com base nas tragédias
e aventuras de sua mitologia, já a literatura contemporânea é a que vivenciamos atualmente. A
transição de uma escola literária para a outra se dá por meio de mudanças no cotidiano de
determinada época.
