DIY Chu Shogi set - A3

You can make a Chu Shogi set using these templates. This set of templates is for an A3 printer(*). Most public libraries in the
U.K. have A3 printers, otherwise use your local print shop. With care, you can make a really rather nice set – cheap – £5-6!
(*) What do I do if I don't have access to an A3 Printer? There is also a set specifically designed for an A4 printer – DIY Chu Shogi set – A4.pdf. You can
probably print this set onto A4 sheets (of course, the size of the board and pieces will be reduced correspondingly). How? View the file from within a PDF reader (I
use Sumatra – available from portableapps.com). Select the printer icon ( ) at the top of the display; select the pages you wish to print; select the Advanced tag;
within the advanced options, select Shrink pages to printable area; select Print. Your selected pages should successfully print to A4 sheets. 
The Chu Shogi board is smaller than a 'standard size' board in order to fit it onto a single A3 sheet. It's the best I could do
using fixed-width box drawing symbols. There are versions with and without rank and file markings. The 'new kaya' wood-
effect background is based on one of my own Shogi boards.
The graphic piece designs are based on those used by the late George Hodges in his leaflet Middle Shogi and how to play it
(The Shogi Association, 1980). They are used with permission. I have included at least one spare for every piece. The leaflet
(and other Chu Shogi material) is still available from Mrs. A. Hodges (g.hodges@talk21.com). 
There is an alternative board and pieces. These designs are based on those produced by Chris Bogert in 2015. The Chu Shogi
board has been reduced in size so that it fits onto a sheet of A3 paper. Chris's excellent web site is located at:
http://chrisbogert.wixsite.com/chaturanga-family, and I am grateful to Chris for granting permission to use his designs –
which are very nice! I have included at least one spare for every piece. 
First, the board:
1. Print a copy of one of the pages making up the board (page 2 or 3). Use good quality paper. If you can get access to a
laser printer, so much the better. If your printer can handle card, use 160-210gsm card (note: many A3 printers
can't handle card).
2. Using a sharp knife, carefully trim the board to the correct size.
3. Now, put the board inside an A3 laminating pouch and pass it through a laminator. Trim the laminated board to the
correct size – do not trim the plastic too close to the edge of the actual board, or the whole thing will 'open up' and
de-laminate.
4. As an alternative, use double-sided adhesive tape to stick the board to a piece of photographic mounting card, and
trim to size using a sharp knife.
Next, the pieces:
1. Print a copy of the pieces – (pages 4 & 5). Use 160-210 gsm card if possible (see earlier note about A3 printers)
2. Result: a set of pieces with the promotion kanji positioned correctly on the reverse side of the relevant pieces
3. Now, cut the pieces into the marked out strips
4. Crease each strip along the faint line separating the 'front' of the pieces from the 'back', and fold carefully
5. Stick the 'back' and 'front' together using double sided adhesive tape
6. Carefully cut out the pieces with a pair of sharp scissors – there are plenty of spares!
You can use glue rather than double-sided adhesive tape for the board, or for the pieces , but beware – using glue is messy,
and the glue will probably soak into the paper/card causing the images to run. I very strongly recommend using lamination or
double-sided adhesive tape for the board, and double-sided adhesive tape for the pieces. It is a little more expensive, but the
results justify the extra outlay.

The key to success with these DIY Shogi sets is to use good quality materials. In the U.K, you can buy A3 laminating pouches
(for the board) from Office Outlet stores; wide (Unibond brand, 5mixi38mm) double-sided adhesive tape (for the board) from
B&M stores; narrow (8mixi18mm) double-sided adhesive tape (for the pieces) from The Works stores; and white mounting card
and white 160-210 gsm card from Hobbycraft stores.
