In order to be able to communicate ideas and thoughts in a foreign language effectively and efficiently, students need to develop competency in four language skills, namely:
 Speaking;
 Listening;
 Reading;
 Writing;
I –LANGUAGE SKILLS

This term refers to the use of language to make meaning. As learners are involved in this meaning-making process, they are also involved in learning. That is to say, their own language production helps to mediate their learning process. As learners produce language, they are able to reflect upon their own language output in an iterative process of production and learning.
LANGUAGING
Languaging helps students notice their progress in learning the target language. Besides, it provides some clues on which elements they should focus more.

Reading and listening are known as receptive skills, because they enable students to receive language and decode it to understand a message.
Speaking and writing, on the other hand, are known as productive skills. They are the ones that enable students to use the language they have learned in order to produce messages either orally or in written form.

SYSTEMATIZING LEARNING

People produce language, either orally or in written form, because they want to interact with their interlocutors. Therefore, there are some things they need to take into consideration before trying to convey a message:
What are they speaking or writing about?
Who are they speaking or writing to?
Why are they speaking or writing about that topic?
Where are they speaking or writing about it?
When are they speaking or writing about it?
PRODUCTIVE SKILLS – ELEMENTS TO BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT

Toda situação de interação comporta a existência do interlocutor, porém as formas de introduzir este outro e de ele atuar sobre quem fala são de natureza diferente. A partir disso, pode-se afirmar que referências culturais na língua estrangeira serão fundamentais para que o aluno possa ter acesso às regras interacionais aceitas nessa língua, como por exemplo: o direito de interromper alguém, mesmo em uma conversa informal em línguas diferentes.
SPEAKING AND THE PCN´S
As a consequence, besides considering the four traditional language skills, there is a fifth elements which is vital in this process: INTERCULTURAL COMPETENCE

Intercultural competence is the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with people of other cultures.
1) Appropriately: Valued rules, norms, and expectations of the relationship are not violated significantly;
2) Effectively: Valued goals or rewards (relative to costs and alternatives) are accomplished;
In interactions with people from foreign cultures, a person who is interculturally competent understands the culture-specific concepts of perception, thinking, feeling, and acting.

Reading and writing are closely related skills; therefore teachers should encourage their students to read as much as they can, because their readings will definitely influence their choice of topics, writing style, and vocabulary while reading. Also, it’s commonplace that the more you read, the better you write.
Since reading and writing are interconnected skills, it’s always a good idea to introduce them in an integrated way.By doing this, the teacher will enable his/her students, among other things, to develop their vocabulary, enhance their reading and writing skills, improve their critical thinking, and broaden their knowledge about specific subjects.
