O surgimento da trigonometria está diretamente ligado aos povos egípcios e babilônicos. Eles utilizavam as razões entre os lados de um triângulo na resolução de problemas cotidianos.

Mas foi na Grécia que a trigonometria obteve ascensão. Hiparco é o possível mentor desta ciência, pois é atribuído a ele o estabelecimento das bases trigonométricas.

Surgiu a necessidade de medir ângulos e distância inacessíveis nos problemas relacionados à astronomia contribuiu para o uso da trigonometria como ferramenta auxiliar. Os hindus e os árabes também tiveram participação incisiva no seu desenvolvimento.

Mas até então a trigonometria era uma parte da astronomia. Foi na Europa, por volta do século XV, que a trigonometria foi separada da astronomia, surgindo inúmeras aplicações em diversas áreas do conhecimento. O termo trigonometria é de origem grega e está associado ao triângulo e suas medidas.

As relações existentes no triângulo retângulo são seno, cosseno e tangente. Entendemos por seno a relação existente entre o cateto oposto e a hipotenusa; por cosseno, a relação existente entre o cateto adjacente e a hipotenusa; e tangente, a relação entre o cateto oposto e o cateto adjacente.
