Preface to the Second Edition
During the past decade there has been evidence of a rapidly growing
interest in the methods of flow visualization. The tremendous progress in
the development of new methods is reflected in the International Sympo
sia on Flow Visualization of which the first took place in Tokyo in 1977.
These symposia have contributed substantially to the interdisciplinary
exchange between scientists and engineers using these methods, and they
particularly make evident the great achievements made by our Japanese
colleagues in this field. The second edition of this book tries to account for
the new developments, applications, and results.
While preparing this book, I have benefited from many discussions
with colleagues in the field and particularly from discussions with my
students, who have been enthusiastically active in this area. Again, a
great number of authors and research institutions have kindly provided
photographs and illustrations, and I am very grateful for this help. I cor
dially thank Ms. Barbara Brandt, who typed the manuscript, as well as
the publisher, who showed great patience when I was preparing this sec
ond edition.
