FR EN TE Ú N IC A 17 Observe agora o seguinte exercício resolvido do vestibular da ESPM: Exercício resolvido Disponível em: <www.gocomics.com/calvinandhobbes/2013/08/01>. 2 ESPM 2014 One may infer from the comic strip that A Calvin’s mother thinks he had better improve his selling techniques. b Calvin’s mother grounded him because he stepped out of line. c Calvin intended to water the flower instead of wetting his mother. d Calvin wishes to be a salesman when he grows up. E Calvin has to work as a salesman to get out of trouble. Veja: She looked at me carefully. (advérbio que significa cuidadosamente, derivado do adjetivo careful ) He is a friendly person. Observe: All the employees are paid weekly. (advérbio que significa semanal- mente, derivado do substantivo week ) I don’t like this weekly magazine. Learning is not easy. (Aprender/O aprendizado não é fácil; o sufixo formou um substantivo) He is learning Spanish. (Ele está aprendendo espanhol; o verbo está no gerúndio) What happened is intriguing. Observe: We’re having a barbie (barbecue). Would you like to play some footy/footie (football)? Is there a servo (servicestation, petrol station) near here? I met an Aussie yesterday. Being a people-oriented industry, tourism also provides many jobs which have helped revitalise local economies. However, like other forms of development, tourism can also cause its share of problems, such as social dislocation, loss of cultural heritage, economic dependence and ecological degradation. Learning about the impacts of tourism has led many people to seek more responsible holidays. These include various forms of alternative or sustainable tourism such as: ‘nature-based tourism’, ‘ecotourism’ and ‘cultural tourism’. Sustainable tourism is becoming so popular that some say that what we presently call ‘alternative’ will be the ‘mainstream’ in a decade. Sustainable tourism is defined as “tourism that respects both local people and the traveller, cultural heritage and the environment”. It seeks to provide people with an exciting and educational holiday that is also of benefit to the people of the host country. Why can’t I find a girl like dear old me? By Jocelyn Selim A group of psychologists at St. Andrews University in Scotland has debunked1 the theory that opposites attract. They say people really want a partner who looks a lot like2 what they see in the mirror3: After recruiting volunteers to rate4 the attractiveness5 of faces flashed6 on a computer screen7, the researchers found that both men and women gave higher scores to the countenances8 that more closely9 resembled10 their own. When the researchers used a program to morph each subject’s face into a gender-reversed version, the responses got even more enthusiastic. “The ideal was a slightly11 changed version of themselves, what an identical twin12 of the opposite sex would look like if such a thing were possible,” says David Perrett, who led the study. The search for lookalike13 lovers is probably driven14 less by narcissism than by sexual imprinting15, the common tendency of animals to choose mates16 that resemble their parents in order to continue the species. In the St. Andrews study, women who were born to older couples were more likely to overlook17 wrinkles18 when evaluating19 the desirability of men. Men were willing20 to overlook a few extra years only if their fathers had married older women and if they were judging the face for a long-term relationship. “So there may be a bit of truth in Freud after all,” Perrett says. 1to debunk: desmascarar. 2to look like: parecer-se com. 3mirror: espelho. 4to rate: classificar. 5attractiveness: atração. 6to flash: exibir. 7computer screen: tela de computador. 8countenances: rostos, fisionomias. 9closely: exatamente, rigorosamente. 10to resemble: assemelhar-se a. 11slightly: levemente. 12twin: gêmeo. 13lookalike: parecido. 14to be driven: ser levado. 15imprinting: impressão, fixação. 16mates: companheiros. 17to overlook: não notar. 18wrinkles: rugas. 19to evaluate: avaliar. 20to be willing: querer, estar disposto a. Climate change: warm words and cool waters There is a serious debate about why observed temperatures have not kept pace with computer-modelled predictions September 1, 2013 Editorial The Guardian Last week’s report that the current “pause” in global warming could be linked to cyclic cooling in the Pacific will be interpreted by climate sceptics as evidence that global warming isn’t happening, and by politicians as a reason to forget about climate change and carry on with business as usual. Both responses would be dangerously wrong. There is no serious argument within climate science about the link between carbon dioxide levels and temperature. Between 1970 and 1998 the planet warmed at an average of 0.17 C per decade, and from 1998 to 2012 at 0.04 C per decade. Carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere, however, continued to rise and are now higher than at any time in the last 800,000 years. Twelve of the 14 warmest years on record have occurred since 2000; the last two years have been marked by catastrophic floods in Australia and record-breaking temperatures in the US; and the loss of north polar ice has accelerated at such a rate that climate modellers expect the Arctic Ocean to be routinely ice-free in September after 2040. There is, however, a serious debate about why the observed temperatures have not kept pace with computer-modelled predictions and where the heat that should have registered on the global thermometer has hidden itself. One guess – supported by some sustained but still incomplete research – is that the deep oceans are warming: that is, the extra heat that should be measurable in the atmosphere has been absorbed by the sea. This is hardly good news: atmosphere and ocean play on each other, and any stored heat is 1 to be returned to the atmosphere sooner or later, in unpredictable ways. The real lesson from the latest finding is that there is a lot yet to be understood about how the planet works, and precisely how ocean and atmosphere distribute 2 from the equator to the poles.
