Preface to the Second Edition 
STARS are the basic building blocks of the Universe. The 
way in which they change with time determines the 
entire appearance of the heavens. One of the great 
advances in science since the Second World War has 
been the development of a detailed understanding of 
stellar evolution. This book is intended to describe our 
present picture of the birth, life and death of stars in a 
way that is comprehensible to the non-specialist.
