Os PRONOMES (pronouns) representam a classe de palavras que substituem ou acompanham os substantivos. De acordo com a função que exercem, eles são classificados em sete tipos: 01 – Personal Pronouns; 02 – Demonstrative Pronouns; and 03 – Possessive Pronouns. 04 – Reflexive Pronouns; 05 – Relative Pronouns; 06 – Indefinite Pronouns; and 07 – Interrogative Pronouns. 4) PRONOMES REFLEXIVOS Em Inglês há um Pronome Reflexivo para cada pronome pessoal. REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS I MYSELF (a mim mesmo, -me) YOU YOURSELF [a ti, a você mesmo(a), -te,-se] HE HIMSELF (a si, a ele mesmo, -se) SHE HERSELF (a si, a ela mesma, -se) IT ITSELF [a si mesmo(a), -se] WE OURSELVES [a nós mesmos(as), -nos] YOU YOURSELVES (a vós, a vocês mesmos(as), -vos,-se) THEY THEMSELVES (a si, a eles mesmos, a elas mesmas, -se) * Os pronomes reflexivos sempre devem concordar com o sujeito. Os “Reflexive Pronouns” exercem 3 Funções: 1) Função Reflexiva: São usados para indicar que a ação reflexiva recai sobre o próprio sujeito. - I cut myself with the glass.(Eu me cortei com o vidro.) 2) Função Enfática: é empregado para dar ênfase à pessoa que pratica a ação: - Marcos himself prepared the breakfast. - Marcos prepared the breakfast himself. (Marcos por si mesmo preparou o café da manhã.) 3) Função Idiomática: quando o pronome vem precedido da preposição by, indicando que o sujeito praticou a ação sem ajuda, sozinho. - My mother prefers cooking by herself. (Minha mãe prefere cozinhar sozinha.) 5) PRONOMES RELATIVOS Os pronomes relativos (relative pronouns) se referem a termos citados anteriormente e devem ser usados sempre para se introduzir uma oração subordinada a uma oração principal. Os pronomes relativos são: “that, who, whom, which, whose e where”, cada um possui sua função diferenciada: THAT (que): relativo a pessoas, animais e coisas. - He is the man that saved the planet. (Ele é o homem que salvou o planeta). - The first thing that I remember is his smile. (A primeira coisa que eu lembro é do sorriso dele.) WHICH (que, o qual, os quais, a qual, as quais): relativo a coisas e animais. - This is the bus which I take to go home. (Este é o ônibus que eu pego para ir para casa). - The elephant, which died, is from South Africa. (O elefante que morreu é da África do Sul.) WHO e WHOM (que ou quem): relativo a pessoas. -WHO: é usado também em sentenças onde ele substitui um sujeito ou mesmo uma oração. - There is a woman outside who wants to see you. (Há uma mulher lá fora que quer falar com você). - The man who lives here is a teacher. (O homem que vive aqui é professor) -WHOM: também se refere a uma pessoa, mas, ao invés de substituir o sujeito na frase, ele é usado no lugar da pessoa que sofre a ação. - The woman whom you called is my cousin. (A mulher a quem você ligou é minha prima). -The girl about whom you are talking is my roommate. (A garota de quem você está falando é minha companheira de quarto) - Helen is the girl with whom I am going to Spain. (Helen é a garota com quem estou indo para a Espanha). WHOSE (cujo, cuja, cujos, cujas): relativo à posse, é usado para pessoas, objetos e animais. - This is the shirt whose sleeves are too tight. (Esta é a camisa cujas mangas são muito apertadas). - This is Paul, whose sister went to college with me. (Este é o Paulo, cuja irmã foi à faculdade comigo.) WHERE (onde, em que, no que, no qual, na qual, nos quais, nas quais) é usado para se referir a lugar ou lugares. - The place where I live is far from here. (O lugar onde moro é / fica longe daqui.) WHAT (o que)é usado para algo que é sujeito ou objeto da frase. I don't know what happened last week. (Eu não sei o que aconteceu na semana passada) Você Pode Tudo! E eles podem ser omitidos em alguns casos. Só para lembrar: essas palavras servem para unir orações e, ao mesmo tempo, substituir um termo para evitar sua repetição. “Pelé, who is the king of soccer, is Brazilian”. Veja que usamos “who” unir as duas orações e para evitar a repetição do termo “Pelé”. (Obs.: O pronome relativo não pode ser omitido após vírgula nem após preposição.) “The book (that) you bought is here” o pronome relativo pode ser omitido quando ele se referir ao objeto.
