Taking the case of the Republic of Palau in Micronesia as an example, I will examine, first, the emergence of English in the context of the country’s complex colonial past. Second, I attempt to apply Schneider’s ‘Dynamic Model’ of postcolonial English formation to this community. Palau provides an interesting and important testing ground for the model, because few communities in which English has emerged as a result of American as opposed to British colonialism have been examined to date. Finally, I present, based on analyses of recordings of informal conversations among Palauans, an initial portrait of the main linguistic characteristics of Paluan English, and assess the extent to which English is nativising in this small community. If a foreign language teacher attends the lecture by David Britain, its subject might help him/her prepare a class about: a) Language variation, dialects and “Englishes”. b) Lexical similarities and differences between world Englishes. c) Grammatical aspects of the English language used by non-native speakers. d) Differences between American and British English variations around the world. e) Dialects of the English language as a mother tongue and as a foreign language. 2 As habilidades de produção na língua inglesa, também conhecidas como habilidades ativas, são aquelas nas quais o falante precisa efetivamente produzir linguagem. Give a man a pipe he can smoke, Give a man a book he can read, And his home is bright with a calm delight, Though the rooms be poor indeed. Give a man a girl he can love, As I O my Love, love thee, And his hand is great with the pulse of Fate, At home, on land, on Sea. 2 Cada frase do texto está enumerada para você poder responder às perguntas sobre o texto: 1. There’s a little game I want us to play that I used to play at school. 2. It’s called Forget-Me-Not. 3. I’m going to call out some words – just anything at all – and as I say each word, you’re all to put down the first thing that comes to your mind. 4. Is that clear? 5. For instance, if I should say “grass”, you might write “it’s green”, or anything else you think of. 6. Or if I call out “bridge”, you might put down “a card game”. 7. It’s an interesting game because it shows the reactions of people to different things and tells you a lot about the people themselves. 8. You see how simple and easy it is? Onde é a ênfase do substantivo composto “forget-me-not” (sentença 2) e do pronome indefinido “anything” (sentenças 3 e 5)? Você daria ênfase nas palavras “because” (sentença 7), “you” (sentença 8) e “is” (sentença 8)? Se sim, por quê? 40 GABARITO DAS AUTOATIVIDADES UNIASSELVI NEAD F O N É T I C A E F O N O L O G I A E M L Í N G U A I N G L E S A R.: Forget-me-not / ánything na sentença 3, mas não tônico na sentença 5 Themselves Card game Call out e put down na sentença 3, na sentença 6 estas palavras não são tônicas.
