A WRITER’S STYLE IS WHAT SETS HIS OR HER WRITING APART and makes it unique!
Style is the way writing is dressed up (or down) to fit the specific context, purpose, or audience. Word choice, sentence fluency, and the writer’s voice — all contribute to the style of a piece of writing.

How a writer chooses words and structures sentences to achieve a certain effect is also an element of style. When Thomas Paine wrote “These are the times that try men’s souls,” he arranged his words to convey a sense of urgency and desperation. Had he written “These are bad times,” it’s likely he wouldn’t have made such an impact!

Style is usually considered to be the province of literary writers. Writersas Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner and poets such as Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman are well known for their literary styles. But journalists, scientists, historians, and mathematicians also have distinctive styles, and they need to know how to vary their styles to fit different audiences. For example, the first-person narrative style of a popular magazine like National Geographic is quite different from the objective, third-person expository style of a research journal like Scientific American, even though both are written for informational purposes.

Descriptive writing creates an impression in the reader’s mind of an event, a place, a person, or thing. The writing will be such that it will set a mood or describe something in such detail that if the reader saw it, they would recognize it.

Watson and the Shark

Watson and the Shark is a painting by John Singleton Copely. In the foreground of the painting, one naked man is being attacked by a huge gray shark in the cold and choppy seawater. One small overloaded rowboat is near the naked man and the frightening shark. There are nine horrified men in this rowboat. They are trying to rescue the naked man. One young man takes a long spear and wants to kill the shark. Some people are reaching for his hand, and some are throwing a rope for him to catch. In the background of the painting, under the dark and cloudy sky, there are many ships stopping in the stormy harbor. The whole painting makes people feel tension and fear.

This paragraph is well written in a number of ways. Firstly, the sentence structure is correct and shows compound sentence combining. Secondly, the student used a number of adjectives to add life to the description. Thirdly, the description is organized from the focal point in the front of the painting to the background, just as our eyes would follow the painting. The ideas flow smoothly from one to the other because of cohesive devices such as sentence combining, pronouns, correct use of definite and indefinite articles, repetition of key words, and prepositions that direct the reader’s attention around the image.

Finally, it is easy to read because it is well edited. I only made four minor corrections for this copy. The student wrote clearly and correctly (and probably edited it at home) so that I didn’t have to guess what she meant or be distracted by mistakes. This paragraph is an excellent example of a descriptive paragraph.

My brother Michael’s bedroom

Lesson 2 - Description – Language Support
OFICINA DE REDAÇÃO EM LÍNGUA INGLESA
My brother Michael’s bedroom reflected his fascination with fantasy and science fiction. Glow-ing-the-dark stars were pasted on the ceiling where, at night, they glowed in the dark. Other stars could be seen covering the ceiling during the day, giving the appearance of a starry sky. Movie posters lined the walls. A poster of Stephen Spielberg’s AI: Artificial Intelligence hung next to a poster of The Matrix in a shiny chrome frame. Below the posters were two black steel bookcases crammed with books like Fahrenheit 451 and The War of the Worlds. Old videos like Raiders of the Lost Ark and Alien were also stacked on the bookshelves. Anyone entering my brother’s room would know at once that Michael liked to escape to fantastic and futuristic places.

My own personal place
It is what I like to call “my own personal place.” My four-walled-bedroom is like a little slice of Heaven. As I look around I see many things that reflect me. I love anything and everything about sports, so my room has a multi-colored, plaid, athletic-themed comforter for my four-posted bed with cozy, flannel sheets secretly hidden beneath. I often pick up golden trophies, first place blue ribbons, and certificates with silvery writing thatremind me of games of all kinds that were won and lost and the numerous teams I have played on. Sometimes my room smells like a gym locker room that has not been cleaned for an entire school year after my laundry of dirty practice clothes piles up. When I go to sleep I like to think I can hear the voice of an announcer yelling my name as

as I score the victorious points for my, yet again, undefeated team. Although some may find this small place messy, unorganized, or cluttered, I think it is like me exceptional, authentic, and unique. I love my bedroom. I would not change anything about it!

RELATIVE CLAUSES – SYNTACTIC ASPECTS
We use relative clauses to give additional information about something without starting another sentence. By combining sentences with a relative clause, your text becomes more fluent and you can avoid repeating certain words.

The Relative Pronoun takes the place of the noun it describes. This way, the choice of pronoun will be determined by the noun it refers to. The main ones are:
WHO - for people
WHICH - for things
THAT - for things or people (less formal than which and who)
WHEN - for times
WHERE or IN WHICH - for a place or places
WHOSE - for possession

Metaphors and similes
A metaphor is "a figure of speech containing an implied comparison, in which a word or phrase ordinarily and primarily used of one thing is applied to another.
A metaphor is distinct from, but related to a simile, which is also a comparison. The primary difference is that a simile uses the word like or as to compare two things, while a metaphor simply suggests that the dissimilar things are the same. Take a look at some of these metaphor examples to get a better understanding.

Purpose of Metaphors
Expressions are used to give effect to a statement. Imagine how bland a statement such as “he was sad” is, compared to a statement describing a “sea of grief.” The metaphor is sure to give the reader a better idea of the depths of grief in this situation.
