Episode 14
A Bad Day
PART 1
OUTSIDE THE COLLEGE—DAY
Rebecca walks up to a newspaper machine. She buys a newspaper. Then she opens it to the “Help Wanted”
section. She looks serious.
PHONE BOOTH
Rebecca is holding the “Help Wanted” ads.
REBECCA Yes, I’m available right away... A car? No, I don’t have a car...
She is on a different call.
REBECCA Hello, I’m calling about the ad in the paper for a part-time receptionist. . . No, I
worked in a factory for six years... just a minute. Hold on, I have to put in some
more money... Just a moment... Hello? Hello?
Rebecca calls another number.
REBECCA I’m calling in response to your ad in the paper. . . Yes.. . yes.. . I can come
over right now.
She hangs up the phone. She is happy about getting an interview.
REBECCA Oh, yes!
TEMP AGENCY OFFICE
Rebecca sits at a desk across from a man. He looks at her résumé.
TEMP AGENCY MAN Oh, I see you’ve worked for a computer company.
REBECCA Yes. I worked for Bull Information Systems in Boston.
TEMP AGENCY MAN Could you tell me about your job there?
REBECCA I supervised a small department. I looked after the day-to-day operations, quality
control, that kind of thing.
TEMP AGENCY MAN Mm-hm. We need someone with a background in data entry. You’re
familiar with all the various computer programs, correct?
REBECCA Oh, I’m sorry. I don’t really type that well. I didn’t use the computers. I built
them.
TEMP AGENCY MAN I see, Miss Casey. Well, we’re interviewing a lot of people...
REBECCA Excuse me, I could learn very fast.
TEMP AGENCY MAN Well, thank you anyway for coming in.
Rebecca realizes that she won’t get the job.
SAN FRANCISCO FACTORY—AFTERNOON
Rebecca’s next interview is in a factory area. A man leads Rebecca through a noisy factory. There are large
machines that are very noisy. Rebecca looks serious. She is ready for a job.
SAN FRANCISCO FACTORY, OFFICE
The man takes Rebecca to an office. She enters. It’s a mess. A middle-aged man is sitting behind a messy
desk. He looks at Rebecca with great interest.
BOSS	Yeah?
REBECCA I’m here about the job you advertised in today’s paper. Here’s my résumé. I’ll have
references in a couple of days.
BOSS	(looks her over) So tell me about yourself.
REBECCA Well, I have six years’ experience in computer manufacturing. I have experience
as a team leader. I’m organized. I’m a hard worker.
BOSS Well, secretarial is what I’m interested in.
REBECCA Oh… I do some typing and light bookkeeping. . . but I’m available only part-
time.
BOSS What do you do the rest of the time? You’re not, uh. . . married, are you?
REBECCA No. I’m starting college—music school. Your ad in the paper said the job was
part-time. . . I just want to make sure it’s definitely part-time.
BOSS Part-time. . . That’s possible.
REBECCA And what exactly is the job?
BOSS I’m looking for a… personal secretary.
REBECCA Mm-hm. . . And what are the responsibilities?
BOSS You know, uh. . . you’d, answer the phone, and do filing, and make coffee, that
sort of thing. Work closely with me.
REBECCA Uh, what is the salary?
BOSS	Well now, that depends.
The man stands up and gets closer to Rebecca.
BOSS I mean, let’s just say that I’d.. . I’d like to have. . . an attractive woman.
working with me.
The man touches Rebecca’s shoulder.
BOSS What do ya say?
Rebecca stands up and takes back her résumé.
REBECCA I say forget it!
She leaves, closing the door behind her.
PART 2
NANCY’S HOUSE—AFTERNO()N
Rebecca is sitting in the living room with her feet up. Angela enters.
ANGELA Hey, Rebecca. How was your day?
REBECCA Don’t ask.
ANGELA Was it that bad?
REBECCA I went in for a job interview at the college. . . but no job. Budget cuts.
ANGELA Oh, no. What are you gonna do?
REBECCA I answered a few ‘want ads’ but. . . no luck.
ANGELA What about an employment agency? That’s what I did.
REBECCA I tried. But I don’t have enough word-processing skills.
ANGELA (shaking her head) It’s not easy to find a job. I was lucky to find mine.
REBECCA (continuing) Ugh, and in one place, a factory, this guy said he wanted an attractive
woman…to work for him… and then he touched me...
ANGELA No! Disgusting! That’s sexual harassment! That happened to me too...
REBECCA I mean don’t you feel like just slapping them?
ANGELA I did (laughing)… and then I lost my job.
The telephone rings. Angela runs into the kitchen to get it.
ANGELA Rebecca, there’s a phone call for you.
REBECCA For me? Who is it?
ANGELA It’s a man.
KITCHEN
Rebecca goes to the kitchen and picks up the phone. Angela watches with interest.
REBECCA (taking the phone) Hello?…Who? Alberto! What a surprise.
ALBERTO’S OFFICE
Alberto is on the phone in his office. He is wrapping up the dream catcher.
ALBERTO So, how was the bus trip?
REBECCA Uh, it was…a long ride.
ALBERTO Listen, what are you doing tonight?
REBECCA Tonight? Nothing special.
ALBERTO Let me show you the city.
REBECCA Oh, I don’t know, I still have so much to do at the house...
ALBERTO I won’t take no for an answer. . . I’ll be there in an hour.
Rebecca hangs up the phone and turns to Angela, who is eagerly listening.
ANGELA Well?
REBECCA I have a date.
PART 3
NANCY’S HOUSE—AFTERNOON
The doorbell rings. Angela races down the staircase.
ANGELA I’m coming. (She opens the door.) Good evening. Hi.
ALBERTO I’m here to see Rebecca Casey.
ANGELA Oh, yes, uh… She’ll be right down. (calling to Rebecca) Rebecca! Rebecca!
REBECCA I’ll be right there.
Alberto is a little confused about who Angela is.
ANGELA I’m Angela Carud. I live here.
ALBERTO Nice to meet you. I’m Alberto Mendoza.
ANGELA Yes, I know.
Melaku enters from the kitchen and heads upstairs.
ANGELA Oh, Melaku, this is Alberto Mendoza. He’s here to see Rebecca. This is Melaku
Tadesse. (They shake hands.)
MELAKU Good evening. It’s nice to meet you.
ALBERTO Yes, nice to meet you too.
Melaku goes upstairs. Alberto points to Melaku, showing that he can guess that Melaku lives here, too.
ANGELA (laughs) I live here and Melaku lives here. Nancy lives here. And now, Rebecca
lives here, too. We all live here.
Rebecca appears at the head of the staircase. She looks entirely different.
REBECCA Hello.
ALBERTO Rebecca! Is that you?
Rebecca walks down the stairs.
ANGELA Well, you two…have fun!
REBECCA Goodbye, Angela...
ALBERTO Nice to meet you, Angela.
Angela leaves.
ALBERTO
I didn’t know you were going to live in a boarding house.
REBECCA A boarding house?
ALBERTO Yeah, with all these people, isn’t that a boarding house?
REBECCA I guess it is…Anyway, it’s good to see you again.
Rebecca smiles. Alberto looks her over. She looks different from the woman he met in the desert.
ALBERTO You…look so different.
REBECCA What, because I’m wearing a dress instead of jeans?
ALBERTO That and your hair, and… everything, I guess.
REBECCA Well, I could change back into my Red Sox jacket.
ALBERTO No, no, no. You look terrific. You haven’t eaten, have you?
REBECCA No, not yet.
ALBERTO Good. I want to show you a bit of San Francisco. Then we’ll have a
fabulous meal.
REBECCA Soundsgood.
ALBERTO Let’s go.
They go out the front door.
OUTSIDE NANCY’S HOUSE
Alberto is escorting Rebecca to his car. He starts to open the door for her.
REBECCA (looking at the door) That’s OK I can get it. . . I remember the last time I was in
this car
ALBERTO Oh yes…the race through the desert to the bus station.
REBECCA Yeah, it was just last week, but so much has happened since then.
Rebecca gets in and Alberto goes to close the door.
ALBERTO You in?
Rebecca nods “yes” from inside the car. Alberto shuts the door and walks over to the driver’s side.
ALBERTO’S CAR
They are traveling through the city.
ALBERTO So, the bus ride was...
REBECCA Ugh…Long…Very long.
ALBERTO Ha ha, I told you. Now remember, I did offer you a ride.
REBECCA Oh… I do remember.
ALBERTO Remind me that I have something that I want to give you. . . later—just a
little gift.
REBECCA For me? I should give you something, after all your help.
ALBERTO Don’t be silly.
REBECCA Well, thank you. That’s very thoughtful. (pause) Are you gonna tell me what it is?
ALBERTO It’s a surprise.
REBECCA I should warn you. I hate to wait.
ALBERTO Me, too.
