The Picnic
PART 1
PARK—DAY
The picnic has already started. Kids are playing games. Everyone is having a good time. The Wangs arrive
with a carload of children. Vincent is greeted by Alex and the boys run off together. Emma walks up to Mr.
and Mrs. Wang.
EMMA Hi, Vincent!
VINCENT Hi.
EMMA Hi, guys, how are you?
VINCENT AND FRIEND Good.
EMMA Lotta fun today!
The rest of the children arriving say “hello” to Emma. Alex tugs on Vincent’s arm.
ALEX Vincent, c’mon. . . c’mon let’s go!
The boys run off to join in the game.
EMMA Hello, Mr. Wang. Thank you for picking up all those children.
MR. WANG Oh, my pleasure. Mrs. Washington, this is my wife, Mei-Lin.
Mrs. Wang smiles and nods to Emma.
EMMA Nice to meet you, Mrs. Wang.
MR. WANG She’s still working on her English, but she’s learning fast. She wants to apply for
citizenship.
MRS. WANG (speaking slowly) So nice to meet you.
MR. WANG Vincent really enjoys your program.
EMMA Oh, we enjoy having him. He’s such a good-natured child.
MRS. WANG (not really understanding) Thank you.
MR. WANG He just loves baseball. My wife and I want to thank Miss Casey for her efforts.
We’re so glad you hired her.
EMMA Oh, I am, too. She’s right over there, organizing the three-legged race.
Rebecca has organized a group of children to participate in a potato sack race. Teams of two children race on
the grass. Alex and Vincent are one of the teams sharing a potato sack.
REBECCA On your marks. . . get set. . . GO!
Shouting and laughing, the children begin their race. Each child has one leg in and the other leg out. They
have to hop together to move. Alex and Vincent come in first.
RAMON Good race, huh? (He holds up their arms.) The winners, ladies and gentlemen!
ON A GRASSY HILL LOOKING DOWN ON THE PARK
Two boys, ages twelve to fourteen, watch as the kids play and have fun at their picnic. These boys are
angry-looking and they could cause trouble.
PUNK #1 Look at the gooks.
PUNK #2 They make me sick.
Mr. and Mrs. Wang arrive at the end of the race. They congratulate the two boys.
REBECCA Nice going, you two!
VINCENT Mom, Dad. . . we won! We won!
MR. WANG Congratulations! Well done!
MRS. WANG (in Mandarin “Congratulations”) Gongxi, nimen yin le.
MR. WANG Oh! Miss Casey, I want you to meet my wife, Mei-Lin.
REBECCA Hello. Glad to meet you.
MRS. WANG So nice to meet you.
REBECCA I have to tell you—it is a pleasure to have your son at the after-school program.
RAMON We have quite a team here...
MR. WANG Yes, they really like to win. . . don’t ya, Alex?
ALEX Uh huh. Hey, Vincent, let’s play softball.
MR. WANG Be careful!
The two boys run off to get the ball, bats, and gloves.
REBECCA Would you like something to drink?
MRS. WANG Please, Yes.
At the picnic table, Emma is giving out drinks.
EMMA Who else needs a drink?
The picnic tables are covered with all kinds of foods. Everyone is eating and enjoying the day.
PART 2
AT THE PICNIC TABLES
One boy comes back for seconds, or thirds or. .
EMMA Jimmy, you’re eating too much! How many hot dogs have you had?
The little boy thinks. He holds up four fingers.
BOY This many.
EMMA You’re gonna get sick.
REBECCA	Save some for the other kids, OK?
BOY OK. I’ll have a cheeseburger.
Rebecca and Emma look at each other and laugh. The two punks watch from behind a parked car. Everyone
is playing baseball. Kids, teachers, and parents have chosen sides and are playing a family-style game.
Everyone is watching the game. No one is watching the picnic tables.
RAMON (pointing to Alex) All right, you’re up now. . . OK, everybody ready? Here ya go.
Ramón makes the pitch. Alex swings and misses.
REBECCA Keep your eye on the ball, Alex, remember.
RAMON (joking with first baseman) Hey, why don’t you kick her off first base, huh?
REBECCA Just a tip, just a tip...
Alex takes another swing. This time, he hits the ball, and the teams continue to play. The two punks move
slowly around the car, waiting for the right time to do something. In the game, someone makes a hit.
Rebecca and Alex cross home plate and score runs. Rebecca cheers and slaps hands with Alex.
REBECCA How ‘bout a double high five?
PUNK #2 Wanna get some food?
PUNK #1 You bet.
The two punks make a hit-and-run attack on the picnic tables. They steal food and make a mess. They
leave quickly when Emma goes over to the picnic tables.
EMMA	Hey! Hey you! You, get out of there! You, hey!
REBECCA Emma, what happened?
Emma chases after the boys.
EMMA Hey! What are you. . . Get outta here! Get outta here!
The two punks run off, laughing as they stuff their faces. Emma returns to the picnic tables. She is upset.
EMMA Oh. . . I don’t know. . . who were they?
REBECCA Who would do this?
The children go back to playing games. Ramón and Rebecca walk to a shady area. They need to rest after
the game.
RAMON Where do they get all that energy? I’m beat!
REBECCA Me, too.
They sit for a while.
RAMON Oh! I almost forgot to give this to you. It’s from Alberto.
He takes the envelope from his shirt pocket and hands it to her.
REBECCA Thanks. (She reads.) Oh, it’s an invitation to your parents’ retirement party
next week.
RAMON Right. It’s going to be quite the affair. By the way, I hope you’ll save a dance for
me.
REBECCA I have to warn you—I don’t dance very well.
RAMON Don’t worry, I do only the slow ones. But I can teach you some Latin dances...
REBECCA I’d like that.
RAMON Where’s Alex?
REBECCA Oh, he’s over there with Vincent.
RAMON Hey! Look at that hit! You taught him to be a good ballplayer.
REBECCA Well, he learns real fast. You’ve done a good job with him.
RAMON We had some hard times right after his mother and I got divorced. But we’re
doing better now.
Rebecca learns for the first time that Ramón is divorced. She listens as Ramón talks about it.
REBECCA When did you get divorced?
RAMON Four years ago.
REBECCA I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have asked, it’s not my business...
RAMON (interrupting) No, no, it’s all right. . . really. My ex-wife recently remarried...
They’re moving to Los Angeles, actually. I just found out. He, her husband, got a
job there. (pause) They want Alex to live with them in L.A.
REBECCA I can’t imagine you without Alex.
RAMON I can’t either.
REBECCA What are you gonna do? You’re not going to let him go, are you?
RAMON His mother and I are trying to work things out. It’s not gonna be easy.
REBECCA I’m sorry it didn’t work out. . . between you two.
RAMON We were just kids when we got married. We had a lot of problems. . . no time to
work them out. . . with two careers.
REBECCA What does Alex think of moving to L.A.?
RAMON He doesn’t know yet.
PART 3
PARK
Alex is up at bat again. The team cheers for him. Alex hits the ball, and it flies up in the air. It lands on the
ground and rolls towards the woods. Vincent runs to get the ball, but he runs into the two intruders. We see
the punks move up slowly toward Vincent until they surround him. Some of the after-school children watch
the incident.
PUNK #1 Hey, Chink. Slanty eyes.
PUNK #2 Why don’t you go back to where you came from?
PUNK #1 Chink chink, Chinaman sittin’ on a fence, tryin’ to make a dollar out of ninety
nine cents.
PUNK #2 Hey, Chink, you know karate? Wanna do karate for us? Karate kid...
Vincent triesto walk away, but they surround him. Alex approaches.
ALEX Hey, Vincent, watch out!
Vincent trips over one of the punks and falls to the ground. Alex yells.
ALEX Hey, leave him alone!
PUNK #1	Why don’t you make me...?
ALEX	Sure...
Alex and one of the punks begin shoving at each other. It turns to hitting, as other children now gather
around, cheering and laughing. Ramón tries to grab one of the boys, but they run away. Rebecca puts her
arms around Vincent and tries to make him feel better.
RAMON Hey! Get outta here! Get out of here. If I catch you here here again, I’ll call the
police. Understand?
The punks take off. Ramón turns to the children who had been watching and laughing. Ramón yells at the
children.
RAMON You should be ashamed of yourselves. Just because those kids are jerks, you don’t
have to act like jerks, too!
By now, Vincent has stopped crying. But Mr. Wang is furious and pulls the boy away from Rebecca.
REBECCA Mr. Wang, it’s all right. They’re gone. It’s over.
MR. WANG It is not all right.
REBECCA I’m sorry. Those kids weren’t from our program.
MR. WANG But these children (pointing to the children from the after-school program) were laughing
at Vincent. . . They were laughing at those names. How could they? What are
you teaching them here?
REBECCA I’m really sorry. I was trying to watch them. I kept an eye on them...
MR. WANG Come, Vincent. Let’s go home.
VINCENT I’m OK, Dad. I want to stay.
MR. WANG Vincent! Don’t argue with me!
Vincent walks off with his father and mother. We see him looking back at Alex. Emma hurries over to
Rebecca and Ramón.
EMMA What’s going on?
RAMON Some troublemakers called Vincent racist names. Alex tried to stop them and got
in a fight.
REBECCA Some of our kids stood around and laughed.
EMMA How did this happen? I thought you were watching them...
REBECCA (interrupting) I sat down for a minute… It happened so fast. I
RAMON It was my fault.
Emma sees Mr. Wang and Vincent heading for their car. Mrs. Wang is hurrying after them.
EMMA Oh, no. Where are the Wangs going?
REBECCA They’re taking Vincent home.
Emma hurries off after Mr. Wang. Emma tries to talk to Mr. Wang. Mr. Wang is angry.
MR. WANG We don’t want to talk about it, Mrs. Washington.
EMMA Mr. Wang, prejudice is everywhere. We have to fight it. . . together. If we walk
away, there’ll be more of it.
MR. WANG I didn’t bring my son here to be called names.
EMMA I’m sorry this happened, but I promise. . . it will not happen again.
MR. WANG We’re leaving.
Emma looks at Vincent’s disappointed face.
EMMA I’m sorry, Vincent. (The Wangs drive off.)
Rebecca speaks strongly with the kids.
REBECCA What just happened was a terrible thing. Those boys were wrong to call Vincent
names. . . and you were wrong to laugh.
RAMON You should be ashamed of yourselves! Do you know how much you hurt Vincent?
The children are silent.
RAMON I know what it feels like. . . People have called me names like spic and wetback.
I’m sure this has happened to some of you, too. How does it feel?
KIDS Bad...
RAMON Yeah, feels pretty bad right? So you shouldn’t do it to other people, right?
KIDS Yes.
Alex, Rebecca, and Ramón are talking together.
ALEX I tried to make them stop, but...
RAMON (interrupting) I know, Alex.
ALEX I wanted to kill those kids!
RAMON I know how you feel, Alex, but you should fight back with words, not with
violence. Nobody taught them right from wrong.
ALEX I got one of them—pow—right in the nose.
RAMON Alex. . . cut it Out!
They walk away.
