 Prejudice
PART 1
AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM—AFTERNOON
Emma has organized a prejudice-awareness workshop for the children in the after-school program. She has
invited a police officer to speak.
EMMA Boys and girls, now we’re all here today because we’re going to do something very
special. Now I need to tell you that I feel terrible about what happened to
Vincent at the picnic the other day…and I know some of you feel badly, too.
So today we’re gonna talk about it and I want to introduce you to someone who’s
very, very special. OK?
KIDS OK.
The children begin to whisper to each other. A policewoman, Officer Jones, enters the room.
OFFICER JONES Hello.
EMMA Boys and girls, this is Officer Jones. Officer Jones is from the Richmond precinct.
OFFICER JONES OK. Let’s talk about what happened. Who wants to start?
KID #1 Some boys started calling Vincent names.
KID #2 Alex told them to stop.
OFFICER JONES Did you see or hear anything else? (Hands go up.)
KID #3 There was a fight.
Emma calls on another child.
KID #1 One of the boys just tripped Vincent and he just started crying.
OFFICER JONES And how did you feel when you saw that?
CHILDREN (all together) Sad.
ALEX I got so mad I even punched one of them.
OFFICER JONES Well, that’s a natural reaction, but we don’t want to treat violence with
violence…What those boys did to Vincent was a crime.
The children whisper to each other.
CHILDREN Crime...?
A girl speaks out:
KID #4 You mean someone could go to jail for that?
OFFICER JONES That’s right. What we’re talking about is a ‘hate crime’…Now the law
says that a hate crime is a crime motivated by bias against someone’s race,
religion, skin color, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, or gender.
The children listen with great interest, trying to understand.
OFFICER JONES (continuing) Now Vincent is a Chinese-American. Those boys attacked him
just because he’s a Chinese-American. He didn’t do anything wrong.
One child looks surprised.
OFFICER JONES (goes on) When this incident happened, did any of you laugh?
The children shake their heads.
OFFICER JONES Some of you laughed, didn’t you? Hm? Was it funny?
CHILDREN No!
OFFICER JONES Do you like it when someone laughs at you?
The kids call out “no.”
PART 2
AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM
EMMA No…Can I say something?
OFFICER JONES Go right ahead, Mrs. Washington.
EMMA Now, what happened is called prejudice. Prejudice is when someone doesn’t like
somebody else because of their race, their religion, where they come from...
How many of you have ever experienced ‘prejudice’?
Some hands go up.
EMMA	Mm-hm. It doesn’t feel good, does it?
The children shake their heads and say “no.”
EMMA No, it’s not nice. And those boys treated Vincent that way simply because he’s
different from them. But guess what? We’re all different. Well, maybe not. . . (She
points to two boys, one white, the other African-American.) You look exactly like him...
The children laugh and arid shake their heads “no.”
EMMA Are you sure? Look at each other!
The two boys look each other over, smiling and laughing.
BOY #1 Ah, yeah, we don’t look alike.
EMMA I must be confused. . . You look exactly like her. (She points to a girl, and the children
laugh.) C’mon you have on the same hat.
BOY #2 I don’t even have a hat on!
EMMA You don’t? (She continues comparing various kids in the group.) Oh, then it’s you who
looks like him. . . Oh, you two are the same. You’re sisters, aren’t you?
KIDS (laughing) No.
EMMA Oh, c’mon, Alex, this is your twin sister! Actually, you’re identical twins. No?
We’re all different. What if we all looked the same, it would be boring, wouldn’t
	it?
CHILDREN Yes.
EMMA Yeah. So, that’s what happens when people treat people badly because they’re
different. It’s kinda crazy because we’re all different. Now, unfortunately,
Vincent’s parents don’t want him to come back to the program.
GIRL But the boys who tripped Vincent don’t go to our program.
EMMA That’s true, but it happened at our picnic, and some of our students laughed.
That’s when it became our problem. So I think we need to do something about it.
I think we need to write some letters, draw some pictures. . . What do ya think?
CHILDREN Yeah!
EMMA Yeah, we can let him know how we feel about what happened.
The kids all agree, smiling.
GIRL That’s a great idea.

PART 3
THE WANGS’ APARTMENT—AFTERNOON
Vincent and his mother are reading an English-as-a-Second-Language book together. He is helping her with
her English.
MRS. WANG (She reads from the book.) There was a fox…who was very hungry… She was
	looking for food...
Vincent tries to talk to her.
VINCENT Mom, why can’t I go back to the after-school program? I miss my friends.
MRS. WANG Children who laugh at you…are not your friends.
VINCENT Alex didn’t laugh at me. He tried to help me. He’s my friend.
MRS. WANG I know, Vincent. I know.
VINCENT Please let me go back, Mommy.
AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM
Emma and Rebecca watch as the children in the program draw pictures and write notes asking Vincent to
come back. This is Emma’s way of showing Mr. Wang that the children like Vincent.
EMMA Class, Elizabeth did a wonderful card: ‘To Vincent, you are my friend.’ Isn’t that
nice?
The kids all agree with her.
REBECCA (reading one of the children’s cards) ‘Hope you can come back soon. Steven.’ That’s
nice, Steven.
GIRL (reading her card to Emma) ‘To Vincent, I hope you can forgive me.’
EMMA Were you one who laughed?
GIRL (embarrassed) Yeah...
EMMA Why did you laugh?
GIRL Well, I just thought it was funny...
EMMA You don’t think it’s funny now, do you?
GIRL No, I don’t.
Emma and Rebecca continue to go from table to table, looking at the cards the children are making.
REBECCA (reading a card) Baseball, our favorite game. He’ll like that drawing of baseball...
EMMA That’s good. That’s very good. (She reads the card.) ‘Please come back to the after-
school program. We want you back, Jonathan.’
REBECCA	(walking over to Alex) How’s your card coming along, Alex?
ALEX Pretty good.
REBECCA Lemme see...
ALEX (reading card) ‘To Vincent, from Alex. Vincent, you have to come back. We are a
	team. I miss you. Alex.’
REBECCA Oh, that’s sweet, Alex. And you have the two team members on there. That’s
	great. He’s gonna like that.
ALEX	I hope so.
