Episode 31
A Box of Memories
PART 1
CASEY APARTMENT, KITCHEN—NIGHT
Rebecca and Kevin sit at the kitchen table and open the box. They pull out official-looking papers. Rebecca
goes through them. She picks up a small envelope. She opens it and finds two keys with tags.
REBECCA Keys. (She reads the tag.) Fleet Bank. Safe deposit box number D-three-fifty-four.
Dad had a safe deposit box?
BANK—DAY
Rebecca and Kevin walk into a big bank. They make their way to a customer representative.
Rebecca and Kevin talk to a bank customer service representative.
BANK OFFICER May I help you?
REBECCA Hello. My name is Rebecca Casey. My father had a safe deposit box here. He died
recently, and we’d like to get into it. I have the key.
BANK OFFICER I’m sorry to hear about your father.. . What’s the box number?
REBECCA D-three-five-four.
The banker begins checking the number on his computer.
BANK OFFICER (as he works) Is your name on the account?
REBECCA Not that I know of...
BANK OFFICER Ah, that could be a problem.. . Yes, here it is. What was your father’s
name?
REBECCA Patrick Casey.
BANK OFFICER Casey, isn’t it? Yes, it’s a joint account with Rebecca Casey. Your signature is
right there. (He shows it to her.) You signed it nine years ago.
REBECCA Oh, my gosh! I completely forgot.
BANK OFFICER I guess your father was thinking of you. . . I’ll need to see a picture I.D. Do
you have a driver’s license?
REBECCA (looking for her driver’s license) Somewhere in here. .. (She finds it and hands it to him.)
The banker checks her license.
BANK OFFICER Thank you. Ms. Jackson will show you the way to the safe deposit box.
BANK—SAFE DEPOSIT VAULT
Ms. Jackson leads Kevin and Rebecca to the area where their box is. She takes the key from them and opens
the safe door. She then pulls out the box and gives it to them.
MS. JACKSON (as Rebecca hands her the key) Thank you. . .You can use the room to your right.
REBECCA Thanks.
PART 2
BANK—PRIVATE ROOM
Rebecca and Kevin sit down at the small desk and look at each other. Then Rebecca slowly opens the lid.
They both look inside. They take out papers, clippings, small boxes, and a large envelope.
KEVIN	I didn’t know Dad stashed all this stuff away.
REBECCA (looking in amazement) I had no idea he kept all this. Oh, it’s a letter from a woman
he saved in the hotel fire...
KEVIN	(leaning to read) What’s this?
REBECCA (picking up an old recital program) Oh, I can’t believe it—it’s a program from a recital
I was in when I was a little girl. I didn’t know he was so sentimental.
KEVIN	Lemme see...
Rebecca gives it to him and picks up a letter.
REBECCA . . . And a letter from Mom...
She reads it. Kevin reaches in and removes some papers.
KEVIN Here’s Dad’s discharge papers from the Boston Fire Department. . . Here’s his
birth certificate. . . Here’s Mom’s death certificate.
Rebecca takes out a photo of two young men. Their names are written in ink under them, Patrick
and Brendan.
REBECCA Look, it’s a picture of Dad and Uncle Brendan.
Kevin takes the picture from her and studies it closely.
KEVIN	They look so young.
REBECCA Just about your age.
Rebecca digs in the box. She takes out two old passports.
REBECCA Oh. . . Grandma and Grandpa’s passports from Ireland.
She opens each one to the photographs.
REBECCA These passports were processed at Ellis Island in 1920.
Kevin looks.
REBECCA They must have sailed in right past the Statue of Liberty. God, that must have
been something. Can you imagine what that was like?
Rebecca opens a small jewelry box. It’s a traditional Irish friendship ring—a Claddagh, a gold ring with two
hands holding a heart with a crown on top.
REBECCA It’s an old Irish ring. Isn’t it beautiful?
KEVIN I can understand what the heart means, but. . . what about the hands and the
crown?
REBECCA The hands mean friendship, and the crown means loyalty.
She looks to see if it’s engraved.
REBECCA There’s something engraved on it.
KEVIN	What does it say?
REBECCA I don’t know. It’s in Irish.
KEVIN	It must’ve been Mom’s.
REBECCA No. I never saw this ring on Mom’s finger. Maybe it’s Grandma’s.
Next, Rebecca pulls out a large stack of U.S. savings bonds.
REBECCA Look. . . U.S. savings bonds.. . There’s about forty here, and they’re each a
hundred dollars...
KEVIN	Four thousand dollars?
Rebecca looks in the box. She pulls out the insurance policy.
REBECCA Kevin, you were right. Dad did have an insurance policy!
She looks at it, talking to herself:
REBECCA Whole life…Patrick Francis Casey.. . face value, fifty thousand dollars...
KEVIN	Fifty thousand?.. . Fifty thousand big ones? That’s wild!
REBECCA (reading from the policy) Beneficiaries. . . Rebecca Casey and Kevin Casey.
Rebecca and Kevin look at each other, trying to understand what this means.

PART 3
STREET—DAY
Rebecca and Kevin walk down the street. Kevin seems thrilled by their good fortune.
KEVIN	I mean, would you look at us! Are we rich, or what?
REBECCA Kevin, we’re not rich. Dad’s insurance money will barely pay for college for one
of us. Not to mention the rent, and bills, and...
KEVIN	Are you kidding me?. . . Fifty thousand dollars! I could get a motorcycle. . . a
	laptop....
REBECCA	Kevin, try to remember why we’re getting this money.
KEVIN	I remember. . . So what are we gonna do?
REBECCA	First, we cash in these savings bonds.
KEVIN	Mm-hm.
REBECCA	Next, we’ll call the life insurance company and see how we can cash in the policy.
CASEY APARTMENT
Rebecca is on the phone.
REBECCA Oh, no. One of those automated answering services.
KEVIN	Yeah, where did all the human operators go?
REBECCA They put me on hold. Maybe we should talk to Uncle Brendan and ask what
would be better—a CD or some other kind of investment.
KEVIN Yeah, especially for the big money from the insurance policy.
REBECCA Wait a minute.
INSURANCE COMPANY OPERATOR For information on redeeming an insurance policy, please
	press three now.
REBECCA Press three...
INSURANCE COMPANY OPERATOR Hello...
REBECCA Yes, hello. . . my father died recently and I’d like to cash in his insurance policy.
INSURANCE COMPANY OPERATOR One moment. Can you hold, please?
REBECCA Yes, I can hold...
Kevin is sitting nearby, trying to figure out the words of the policy.
KEVIN (looking at the policy) Boy. . . beneficiary, fiduciary, underwriting. . . Every word
they use is a mile long.
REBECCA I have a feeling this is gonna take some time...
CASEY APARTMENT—LATER
Rebecca is still on the phone, now talking to the insurance agent. She takes notes based on the phone
conversation.
REBECCA Yes. . . yes, I understand. Can I have your name please? Joan. . . Thank you very
	much, Joan. . . Bye.
Rebecca hangs up.
KEVIN	So?
REBECCA It’s not a big deal. They said we’d probably get the money in two to three
	months.
KEVIN	One minute we’re broke, and the next minute we’re loaded.
REBECCA	I’m exhausted.
KEVIN	Look, I’ve been thinking about what you were talking about...
REBECCA	Me too. I think that—
KEVIN Let me go first, OK?. . . Rebecca, I want you to go back to college. That’s what
Dad would want, too.
REBECCA I’ve been doing some thinking, too. I’ve decided that I can’t leave you here alone.
KEVIN I know this is hard for you to believe, but I’m not a littlekid anymore.
REBECCA Kevin, I don’t think of you as a little kid, I...
KEVIN (interrupting) Sure you do. . . Look, I’ve been talking to a few of my friends, and
they all have jobs. Three of them want to move in here with me. We’d split the
rent four ways.
REBECCA Sounds like a great idea, but aren’t these the same guys that got thrown out of
that apartment on Gardener Street?
KEVIN	It wasn’t their fault. The landlord was a creep.
REBECCA Sure. And what happens if you and your friends can’t cover the rent?
KEVIN	We’ll pay the rent. You’ll see.
REBECCA I don’t think it’s such a smart idea to live with these guys. It could lead to
trouble.
KEVIN	That’s what I’d be there for—to keep them in line.
REBECCA Oh, Kevin, be serious for once. I mean really...
Kevin gets up and starts pacing the room. He gets more and more upset as he yells.
KEVIN	(mimicking) ‘Kevin, what happens if you do this? Kevin, what happens if you do
that?’ When are you going to stop acting like my mother?
REBECCA Kevin, let’s not start that again.
KEVIN	No, let’s get this out in the open, once and for all. You don’t think I can do
anything by myself. Rebecca, why don’t you just go back to San Francisco and let
	me live my own life?
REBECCA Kevin, I don’t want to start another argument. I am too tired. I don’t have time
	for this.
KEVIN	Rebecca.. . admit it. You just don’t want to go to San Francisco.
 REBECCA Kevin, that’s not it.
KEVIN	Sure it is. You’re using me as an excuse because you don’t want to go to college.
REBECCA Kevin, I want to go back. I should be there. I need to be there for a hundred
	reasons.
He sits next to her, and he thinks about how to talk to her. He tries to convince Rebecca to go.
KEVIN Then go back, Rebecca, go back.. . I can take care of myself, believe it or not.
REBECCA You’re all the family I have. We’ll be thousands of miles apart.
KEVIN What’s a few thousand miles? I mean, they have phones there, don’t they?
REBECCA Yeah, well. . . lemme think about it...
