What’s the box number? 13 REBECCA D-three-five-four. 14 The banker begins checking the number on his computer. 15 BANK OFFICER (as he works) Is your name on the account? 16 REBECCA Not that I know of... 17 BANK OFFICER Ah, that could be a problem.. . Yes, here it is. What was your father’s 18 name? 19 REBECCA Patrick Casey. 20 BANK OFFICER Casey, isn’t it? Yes, it’s a joint account with Rebecca Casey. Your signature is 21 right there. (He shows it to her.) You signed it nine years ago. 22 REBECCA Oh, my gosh! I completely forgot. 23 BANK OFFICER I guess your father was thinking of you. . . I’ll need to see a picture I.D. Do 24 you have a driver’s license? 25 REBECCA (looking for her driver’s license) Somewhere in here. .. (She finds it and hands it to him.) 26 The banker checks her license. 27 BANK OFFICER Thank you. Ms. Jackson will show you the way to the safe deposit box. 28 BANK—SAFE DEPOSIT VAULT 29 Ms. Jackson leads Kevin and Rebecca to the area where their box is. She takes the key from them and opens 30 the safe door. She then pulls out the box and gives it to them. 31 MS. JACKSON (as Rebecca hands her the key) Thank you. . .You can use the room to your right. 32 REBECCA Thanks. PART 2 33 BANK—PRIVATE ROOM 34 Rebecca and Kevin sit down at the small desk and look at each other. Then Rebecca slowly opens the lid. 35 They both look inside. They take out papers, clippings, small boxes, and a large envelope. 36 KEVIN I didn’t know Dad stashed all this stuff away. 37 REBECCA (looking in amazement) I had no idea he kept all this. Oh, it’s a letter from a woman 38 he saved in the hotel fire... 39 KEVIN (leaning to read) What’s this? 40 REBECCA (picking up an old recital program) Oh, I can’t believe it—it’s a program from a recital 41 I was in when I was a little girl. I didn’t know he was so sentimental. 42 KEVIN Lemme see... 43 Rebecca gives it to him and picks up a letter. 44 REBECCA . . . And a letter from Mom... 45 She reads it. Kevin reaches in and removes some papers. 46 KEVIN Here’s Dad’s discharge papers from the Boston Fire Department. . . Here’s his 47 birth certificate. . . Here’s Mom’s death certificate. 48 Rebecca takes out a photo of two young men. Their names are written in ink under them, Patrick 49 and Brendan. 50 REBECCA Look, it’s a picture of Dad and Uncle Brendan. 51 Kevin takes the picture from her and studies it closely. 52 KEVIN They look so young. 53 REBECCA Just about your age. 54 Rebecca digs in the box. She takes out two old passports. 55 REBECCA Oh. . . Grandma and Grandpa’s passports from Ireland. 56 She opens each one to the photographs. 57 REBECCA These passports were processed at Ellis Island in 1920. 58 Kevin looks. 59 REBECCA They must have sailed in right past the Statue of Liberty. God, that must have 60 been something. Can you imagine what that was like? 61 Rebecca opens a small jewelry box. It’s a traditional Irish friendship ring—a Claddagh, a gold ring with two 62 hands holding a heart with a crown on top. 63 REBECCA It’s an old Irish ring. Isn’t it beautiful? 64 KEVIN I can understand what the heart means, but. . . what about the hands and the 65 crown? 66 REBECCA The hands mean friendship, and the crown means loyalty. 67 She looks to see if it’s engraved. 68 REBECCA There’s something engraved on it. 69 KEVIN What does it say? 70 REBECCA I don’t know. It’s in Irish. 71 KEVIN It must’ve been Mom’s. 72 REBECCA No. I never saw this ring on Mom’s finger. Maybe it’s Grandma’s. 73 Next, Rebecca pulls out a large stack of U.S. savings bonds. 74 REBECCA Look. . . U.S. savings bonds.. . There’s about forty here, and they’re each a 75 hundred dollars... 76 KEVIN Four thousand dollars? 77 Rebecca looks in the box. She pulls out the insurance policy. 78 REBECCA Kevin, you were right. Dad did have an insurance policy! 79 She looks at it, talking to herself: 80 REBECCA Whole life…Patrick Francis Casey.. . face value, fifty thousand dollars... 81 KEVIN Fifty thousand?.. . Fifty thousand big ones? That’s wild! 82 REBECCA (reading from the policy) Beneficiaries. . . Rebecca Casey and Kevin Casey. 83 Rebecca and Kevin look at each other, trying to understand what this means. PART 3 84 STREET—DAY 85 Rebecca and Kevin walk down the street. Kevin seems thrilled by their good fortune. 86 KEVIN I mean, would you look at us! Are we rich, or what? 87 REBECCA Kevin, we’re not rich. Dad’s insurance money will barely pay for college for one 88 of us. Not to mention the rent, and bills, and... 89 KEVIN Are you kidding me?. . . Fifty thousand dollars! I could get a motorcycle. . . a 90 laptop.... 91 REBECCA Kevin, try to remember why we’re getting this money. 92 KEVIN I remember. . . So what are we gonna do? 93 REBECCA First, we cash in these savings bonds. 94 KEVIN Mm-hm. 95 REBECCA Next, we’ll call the life insurance company and see how we can cash in the policy. 96 CASEY APARTMENT 97 Rebecca is on the phone. 98 REBECCA Oh, no. One of those automated answering services. 99 KEVIN Yeah, where did all the human operators go? 100 REBECCA They put me on hold. Maybe we should talk to Uncle Brendan and ask what 101 would be better—a CD or some other kind of investment. 102 KEVIN Yeah, especially for the big money from the insurance policy. 103 REBECCA Wait a minute. 104 INSURANCE COMPANY OPERATOR For information on redeeming an insurance policy, please 105 press three now. 106 REBECCA Press three... 107 INSURANCE COMPANY OPERATOR Hello... 108 REBECCA Yes, hello. . . my father died recently and I’d like to cash in his insurance policy. 109 INSURANCE COMPANY OPERATOR One moment. Can you hold, please? 110 REBECCA Yes, I can hold... 111 Kevin is sitting nearby, trying to figure out the words of the policy. 112 KEVIN (looking at the policy) Boy. . . beneficiary, fiduciary, underwriting. . . Every word 113 they use is a mile long. 114 REBECCA I have a feeling this is gonna take some time... 115 CASEY APARTMENT—LATER 116 Rebecca is still on the phone, now talking to the insurance agent. She takes notes based on the phone 117 conversation. 118 REBECCA Yes. . . yes, I understand. Can I have your name please? Joan. . . Thank you very 119 much, Joan. . . Bye. 120 Rebecca hangs up. 121 KEVIN So? 122 REBECCA It’s not a big deal. They said we’d probably get the money in two to three 123 months. 124 KEVIN One minute we’re broke, and the next minute we’re loaded. 125 REBECCA I’m exhausted. 126 KEVIN Look, I’ve been thinking about what you were talking about... 127 REBECCA Me too. I think that— 128 KEVIN Let me go first, OK?. . . Rebecca, I want you to go back to college. That’s what 129 Dad would want, too. 130 REBECCA I’ve been doing some thinking, too. I’ve decided that I can’t leave you here alone. 131 KEVIN I know this is hard for you to believe, but I’m not a littlekid anymore. 132 REBECCA Kevin, I don’t think of you as a little kid, I... 133 KEVIN (interrupting) Sure you do. . . Look, I’ve been talking to a few of my friends, and 134 they all have jobs. Three of them want to move in here with me. We’d split the 135 rent four ways. 136 REBECCA Sounds like a great idea, but aren’t these the same guys that got thrown out of 137 that apartment on Gardener Street? 138 KEVIN It wasn’t their fault. The landlord was a creep. 139 REBECCA Sure. And what happens if you and your friends can’t cover the rent? 140 KEVIN We’ll pay the rent. You’ll see. 141 REBECCA I don’t think it’s such a smart idea to live with these guys. It could lead to 142 trouble. 143 KEVIN That’s what I’d be there for—to keep them in line. 144 REBECCA Oh, Kevin, be serious for once. I mean really... 145 Kevin gets up and starts pacing the room. He gets more and more upset as he yells. 146 KEVIN (mimicking) ‘Kevin, what happens if you do this? Kevin, what happens if you do 147 that?’ When are you going to stop acting like my mother? 148 REBECCA Kevin, let’s not start that again. 149 KEVIN No, let’s get this out in the open, once and for all. You don’t think I can do 150 anything by myself. Rebecca, why don’t you just go back to San Francisco and let 151 me live my own life? 152 REBECCA Kevin, I don’t want to start another argument. I am too tired. I don’t have time 153 for this. 154 KEVIN Rebecca.. . admit it. You just don’t want to go to San Francisco. 155 REBECCA Kevin, that’s not it. 156 KEVIN Sure it is. You’re using me as an excuse because you don’t want to go to college. 157 REBECCA Kevin, I want to go back. I should be there. I need to be there for a hundred 158 reasons. 159 He sits next to her, and he thinks about how to talk to her. He tries to convince Rebecca to go. 160 KEVIN Then go back, Rebecca, go back.. . I can take care of myself, believe it or not. 161 REBECCA You’re all the family I have. We’ll be thousands of miles apart. 162 KEVIN What’s a few thousand miles? I mean, they have phones there, don’t they? 163 REBECCA Yeah, well. . . lemme think about it...
