He is very drunk. 3 JACK Where the hell do you think you’re goin’? 4 SANDY None of your business. Get out of my way. 5 Rebecca and Kevin move back, but not Sandy. Jack moves toward them and suddenly shoves 6 Sandy roughly. 7 JACK You witch! You’re trying to sneak out on me! Ha... 8 REBECCA Let her go, Jack! 9 SANDY Rebecca. . . Don’t... 10 JACK You stay out of this! 11 Jack pushes Rebecca away. Kevin now steps in. 12 SANDY Don’t. 13 REBECCA We’re leaving right now. 14 JACK Get out of here or you’re gonna get it, too! 15 REBECCA You lay a hand on me, and I’ll see you in court. And your boss will be the first to 16 know. 17 Jack pushes Rebecca. Kevin steps in and pushes him. Jack looks him straight in the face. He stands very tall 18 over the boy. 19 KEVIN Don’t you ever touch my sister. 20 Jack starts to say something, but then he closes his mouth in silence. 21 SANDY Kevin... 22 KEVIN Sandy, go call the police. Just do it, now! (Kevin holds Jack.) 23 JACK Don’t you dare! 24 KEVIN Do it! 25 JACK Don’t you dare... 26 Sandy hesitates for a second but then begins to go for help. Jack watches for a second. 27 JACK (to Sandy) Hey.. . Hey. . . You’re gonna pay for this! 28 Jack starts to walk away. Then he turns around and looks angrily at Rebecca and Kevin. 29 REBECCA Don’t try anything stupid, Jack. 30 JACK You make me sick. Really sick! 31 SANDY’S APARTMENT 32 Sandy dials the police. We see her press 9-1-1. 33 SANDY Hello. . . Would you send someone over to the Whitney Apartments, 35 White 34 Street, right away? Yes, my boyfriend hit me. . . Yes, he’s beaten me up before... 35 CURBSIDE 36 Two police officers put handcuffs on Jack and put him into their car. 37 REBECCA Are you all right? 38 SANDY I’m better. . . I’ve stopped shaking. The police are going to keep him overnight 39 and make sure he knows he can’t bother me. They said I should go to court and 40 get a restraining order. 41 KEVIN That’s a good idea. 42 REBECCA Sandy, do you still want to stay at our place tonight? 43 SANDY No, the police advised against it. They gave me a phone number to call. . . some 44 people that can help me out. It’s a. . . a shelter for battered women. 45 BOSTON NEIGHBORHOOD—DAY 46 Sandy walks down the street with an umbrella in her hand. She approaches the shelter. 47 REBECCA Do you want me to come with you? 48 SANDY No. You can’t. They don’t want anybody to know the location. 49 REBECCA How will we know you’re all right? 50 SANDY I’ll call…in a couple of days or so. 51 SHELTER 52 Sandy rings the doorbell and a woman (Mrs. Shapiro) answers it. 53 MRS. SHAPIRO Hi... 54 SANDY Hello. . . My name is Sandy. (pause) Is this the woman’s shelter? 55 MRS. SHAPIRO (sensitively) Yes it is. Come in, Sandy. Welcome. Everybody, 56 this is Sandy... 57 SANDY Hi... PART 2 58 BRENDAN’S RENTAL CAR—DAY 59 BRENDAN What a shame. She’s such a nice girl. 60 KEVIN You know, I think it would be great if Sandy did move into our apartment. . . It 61 would make it easier to leave it behind. 62 Rebecca and Brendan exchange looks. 63 REBECCA What are you saying? 64 KEVIN I’m saying. . . maybe I’ll go out to the farm for a while. 65 BRENDAN We’d like that, Kev. And I don’t think you’ll have any regrets. 66 KEVIN Well, I need a change. Heck, I’ve never been to a farm. Who knows…it might 67 even be cool. 68 Kevin and Rebecca look at each other and smile. 69 CASEY APARTMENT—DAY 70 Rebecca and Kevin are packing boxes and cleaning the apartment. 71 KEVIN Maybe I should check the mail. 72 He starts to head out. 73 REBECCA There shouldn’t be any. I had the mail forwarded to Uncle Brendan’s farm. 74 KEVIN I’ll check anyway. You never know. 75 He leaves. 76 Rebecca covers a chair with a sheet. Kevin returns with a package. 77 KEVIN It’s for you. . . from… Alex Mendoza? 78 She looks at the package. 79 REBECCA Uh.. . Alex! I don’t believe it. 80 She tears open the package and takes out a drawing done by Alex. She turns it over. On the back is written 81 in big letters: “We miss you. Love, Alex.” There is a note attached to the picture. It’s from Ramón. Rebecca 82 reads it aloud. 83 REBECCA ‘Dear Rebecca. Alex asked me to send you this picture. It was very important to 84 him. He asked me to send it right away. I hope you and your brother are doing 85 well. I know your father’s death was a terrible loss to both of you. Try to 86 remember the good times with him. Hope to see you in San Francisco soon. We 87 miss you. With warm wishes, Ramón.’ 88 KEVIN (looking at Alex’s picture) It’s a funny picture. Who’s Alex, anyhow? 89 REBECCA The son of the brother of the guy I’m dating... 90 KEVIN You wanna run that by me again? 91 REBECCA It’s a little complicated. 92 KEVIN A little? I’d say more than a little. 93 The phone rings. 94 KEVIN I’ll get it. Hello. . . Sandy! What’s up? (pause) Are you OK? (pause) No problem. 95 It… it was quite a scene. Would you like to talk to Rebecca... ? OK, she’s 96 right here. All right. Take care. 97 REBECCA Sandy! I’ve been waiting to hear from you. Are you OK? (pause) I only wanted to 98 say goodbye before we leave for my uncle’s farm. (pause) Yeah, we’re leaving 99 tomorrow. (pause) Of course I have time to meet you. Do you want to come over? 100 Just tell me where. I’ll meet you anywhere. OK. All right. . . Bye... PART 3 101 DINER—DAY 102 A little diner somewhere in Boston. Rebecca and Sandy are seated at a table. 103 REBECCA I was worried about you. 104 SANDY I couldn’t come to your place just yet. I don’t know where Jack is. 105 REBECCA The police warned him to stay away, right? 106 SANDY Yeah, but once I get a restraining order from the court, I think I’ll feel better. 107 Until then, the shelter is the safest place. . 108 REBECCA How are you doing there? 109 SANDY At the shelter? It’s good…It’s good to see that I’m not the only one in this 110 mess. And Mrs. Shapiro, the woman who runs the place, is so kind and helpful. 111 REBECCA Are there a lot of other women there? 112 SANDY You wouldn’t believe how many. My first night, there was a support group 113 meeting, so I met everybody. 114 REBECCA But how are you? 115 SANDY I guess I’m pretty embarrassed about the whole thing. And, like a lot of the 116 women there, I thought there was nothing I could do about it. They say therapy 117 helps. 118 REBECCA You’re going for therapy? 119 SANDY Yup. If I’m going to turn my life around, I’m going to need some help. 120 A waiter brings a cup of coffee for each. Rebecca looks at Sandy. 121 SANDY I ordered for you. After all these years, I know what you want. 122 They exchange the kind of laugh that best friends have. 123 REBECCA I’ll miss you. 124 SANDY I’ll miss you too. These are gonna be some tough times. 125 REBECCA You can call me anytime. . . even if it’s the middle of the night. Here’s the 126 number at my uncle’s farm. (She pulls out a pen and writes the number on a napkin.) 127 SANDY Thanks. And, Beck.. . I was wondering. . . if uh…if maybe. . . I think I’d like 128 to take you up on your offer.. . about staying at your apartment? They won’t let 129 me stay at the shelter forever. 130 REBECCA Sandy, you know what’s mine is yours! 131 SANDY I’ll pay for any utilities and the telephone... 132 REBECCA Listen, we’ll worry about the financial arrangements later. The apartment is 133 yours. Here are the keys. 134 SANDY Thanks. . . (She is close to tears, but she stops herself from crying.) I feel like I just 135 joinedthe Casey family. 136 REBECCA You have. 137 SANDY I used to think I had bad luck. . . but now I realize you make your own luck. 138 REBECCA Yeah. . . Amen. 139 They clink their cups. 140 CASEY APARTMENT—AFTERNOON 141 Kevin stands in the darkness. Rebecca checks each room. 142 KEVIN It’s strange to think someone else will be living here. . . even if it is Sandy.. . I 143 can’t get used to this place without Dad... 144 REBECCA I know. So many memories. . . It’s time to go. 145 They pick up their bags and leave. The door closes and we see the empty apartment
