sobre onde e como implantar
projetos de infraestrutura e empreendimentos econô-
micos neste bioma.
Cerrado.
cerrados brasileiros.
Brazil has undertaken important commitments for the conservation of its biodiversity at inter-national forums and perhaps the most impor-
tant of these is to accomplish the targets set out in the
Global Strategy for Plant Conservation – GSPC under
the Convention on Biological Diversity – CBD. Goal
1 of the GSPC, for example, recommends that each
country should, by 2020, have published the botanical
data of all known species of their national flora online.
Goal 2, in turn, requires that each country should as-
sess the risk of extinction of all its species of flora, also
by the year 2020. As Brazil probably has the greatest
richness of flora in the world, the scope of these goals
in such a short period is a huge challenge for our in-

field of botany.
one of the main institutional objectives of the Rio
de Janeiro Botanical Garden – JBRJ is to support pro-
posals for public policies that meet the needs of con-
servation and rational use of the plant genetic resources
in Brazil. To meet such objectives the National Center
for Plant Conservation – CNCFlora, which is a biol-
ogy conservation center within the JBRJ Directorate
of Scientific Research, fulfills a strategic role. The
CNCFlora is responsible for gathering all available data
to assess the conservation status of species of national
flora and define action plans with the goal to remove
these species from the list of endangered species. The
first large scale evaluation carried out by CNCFlora
was consolidated in the Livro vermelho da flora do Brasil
(Red Book of the Brazilian Flora) published in 2013.
CNCFlora assessed the risk of extinction of about 4,600
species of national flora based on previous studies, both
national and regional, that had sited these species as being
possibly threatened.
Among the Brazilian biomes with the highest con-
version rate of native forest into anthropogenic envi-
ronments is the Cerrado. The encroachment of agri-
business into vast tracts of land in central Brazil in re-
cent decades has caused a rapid disappearance of the
habitats and ecosystems characteristic of this biome.
Additionally, the over-exploitation of some species has
led to the depletion of their populations at an alarming
rate. Many species of plants and animals are currently
endangered in this biome, some of them critically en-
dangered. In the present work, 578 species cited in the
book Plantas raras do Cerrado (Rare Plants of Cerrado),
which was prepared by the renowned botanist Dra. Ana
Maria Giulietti and her collaborators, were assessed as to
their risk of extinction.
The heart of this book is a careful risk assessment
that focuses on these Cerrado plants and on their en-
vironments using standardized and internationally ac-
cepted criteria. We sincerely hope that this is not just
another publication on conservation biology. We hope
that the information contained herein concerning the
risk of extinction of the Cerrado plants is considered
in practice; that is, we hope that political-administrative
decisions are made on where and how to deploy infra-
structure projects and economic ventures in this biome,
and that the information in this publication is effec-
tively used to prevent or minimize the impacts of such
undertakings on the species of the Cerrado.
Finally, we also hope that this book will stimulate
the government and society in general to value and
maintain, for this and future generations, these protect-
ed areas representing this immense natural heritage of
extremely rich flora in the different ecosystems of the
Brazilian Cerrado.
10 | Livro vermelho da flora do Brasil – Plantas raras do Cerrado
do índices alarmantes.
insuficientes”, “Menos preocupantes” e “Quase amea-
çadas” para conhecimento geral. As espécies endêmicas
globais.

Extinction risk assessments of Brazilian flora have until now been isolated and sporadic initiatives, only pointing out species that were considered
threatened. The publication of the second Livro vermelho
da flora do Brasil (Red Book of Brazilian Flora) - Plantas
raras do Cerrado (Rare Plants of the Cerrado) – continues
the efforts of the National Center for Plant Conservation
– CNCFlora to assess the megadiverse flora in the coun-
try. This publication was only made possible through
the collaboration of a network of 107 experts, with the
dedication of the Red List Project team and through the
technical support of the Information Systems Project.
Plantas raras do Cerrado (Rare Plants of the Cerrado)
covers the assessment of 578 species considered rare by
Giulietti et al. (2009) and that are present and / or en-
demic to the Cerrado. Despite the profusion of concepts
of rarity and the different definitions, the consensus is
that rare species may be highly vulnerable and, there-
fore, should be prioritized for conservation measures.
The Cerrado biome is currently considered a critical area
needing conservation, and habitat loss in this biome has
reached alarming levels.
This work presents another set of species categorized
as threatened and, in addition to contributing to achieve
