Usado para se referir a uma situacao que estava em andamento em um determinado momento do passado.
Sujeito + verbo “to be” no passado (was/were) + verbo com “ing” 
+ complemento.

She was working yesterday night.
(Ela estava trabalhando ontem à noite)
HE WAS WORKING AT THE COLLEGE.
(ELE ESTAVA TRABALHANDO NA UNIVERSIDADE)
They were watching tv at 5:00 pm.
(eles estavam vendo tv às 5 h da tarde)

Para a forma negativa basta acrescentar o “not” após o passado do verbo “to be” (was/were).

PARA ELABORAR UMA FRASE INTERROGATIVA É NECESSÁRIO COLOCAR O PASSADO DO VERBO “TO BE” (WAS/WERE) NO INÍCIO DA FRASE.

(A LISA ESTAVA COPIANDO OS EXERCÍCIOS DO HARRY?)
Were you two dancing during the P.E. class yesterday?
(VOCÊS DOIS ESTAVAM DANÇANDO DURANTE A AULA DE EDUAÇÃO FÍSICA ONTEM?)
Was Bob riding a horse with his friends on the farm yesterday?

Normalmente utilizamos o past simple o past continuous juntos para dizer que algo aconteceu quando uma outra ação ou acontecimento estava em andamento.
The phone rang when she was cooking the dinner.
(o telefone tocou quando ela estava preparando o jantar)
While I was working I hurt my back
(enquanto eu estava trabalhando, eu machuquei minhas costas)
