Session 8
Motivation & Learning
• There are two ways of motivating anyone: the carrot or the stick.
1. You can either bribe them or threaten them.
2. Some people respond more to carrots, other people respond more to sticks.
3. This is also called "move toward" and "move away."
4. People who like rewards have a hard time punishing people because they don't
like being punished themselves.
5. Half the world responds to carrots, half the world responds to sticks.
• All Leadership involves motivation in some form. You'll need to motivate yourself
and others.
• Motivation is the science of carrots and sticks. But what kind of carrots and sticks -
there are 3 kinds:
1. Power: control, domination.
2. Affiliation: friends, being popular, love.
3. Achievement: getting the task done, reaching the goal.
• Each of the 3 can be either toward or away from... so there's 6 basic motivations.
• There is no simple formula for leadership. It depends on context.
• When you lead a group of people it's likely there's going to be intelligent opposition.
They'll have a good point. And the people who believe the opposition and their way
of thinking will say "yeah, you really are a bad person." Be ready for this.
• We're moving from a time and effort economy into a results economy.
1. It's not about the time you put in - it's about the results you get.
• Leadership = Result
1. If you're getting the result you want, you're leading successfully. If not, you're not.
Try a different style of leadership.
2. If you are a Power oriented leader, how much power did you get or avoid losing?
3. If you are an Affiliation oriented leader, how many followers did you get or avoid
losing?
4. If you are an Achievement oriented leader, what results did you achieve or failure
did you avoid?
• Communication = Response
1. The meaning of your communication is the response you get. That's what counts.
Not your words, style, or intention, but their response.
2. The thing that presses their anger button, love button, or turned on button... is
often totally different from the thing that would do the same for YOU.
3. If you keep getting a result you don't want in your communication, communicate
differently.
4. Different words, different tone, use a story, use an example, show them, introduce
them to someone else who can tell them, etc.
• The human that has the most requisite variety - the most flexibility - will have the
most control over the system.
• Learning = Action
1. If there is no action, then there's no learning.
2. You take action, see the results of your action (feedback), you change your action,
get a different result, and then you "get it."
3. You can only "get it" through taking action on a new idea you've come in contact
with.
