Jonathan Edwards is best known for his frightening, powerful sermon: ¿Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God¿
(1741). His sermons had enormous impact, sending whole congregations into hysterical fits of weeping. So, how
to explain why his ideas were forgotten, left out?
Resposta: Jonathan Edwads was a Puritan, and being so, was pushed by other Puritans to spread Calvinism in a
time where idealistic ideals were springing up. Puritans were a group of people dissatisfied with the Church of
England. Their aim was to spread Christianity and to turn the Bible into the only and most important
representation of their faith and the Christianity itself. Other ideals were spreading throughout the Nations; the
18 th Enlightment made the writers react, giving their response to social forces­ the spread of industries and the
increasing of sectional strifes that would soon bring the Civil War; a War between North and South which brought
the idealism to be rechanneled and made the optmism of the democratic Nation give away.
Gabarito: In the long run their grotesque harshness alienated people from the Calvinism that Edwards valiantly
defended. Edwards¿s dogmatic, medieval sermons no longer fit the experiences of relatively peaceful,
prosperous 18th­century colonists.

As Henry James develops, his novels become more psychological and less concerned with external events. In

hand, later on, he iniciated a more subjective phase ­ where emotions took place. A good example is his novel
