Read the text below: Invitation to the Jenny Cheshire Lecture 2014 English in Paradise?: a new variety in the Pacific Friday 13 June 2014 at 6.30pm Maths Lecture Theatre, School of Mathematical Sciences, Mile End Campus The talk aims to provide a holistic sociohistorical, political as well as linguistic account of the process by which a new English emerges in a colonial environment. Taking the case of the Republic of Palau in Micronesia as an example, I will examine, first, the emergence of English in the context of the country’s complex colonial past. Second, I attempt to apply Schneider’s ‘Dynamic Model’ of postcolonial English formation to this community. Palau provides an interesting and important testing ground for the model, because few communities in which English has emerged as a result of American as opposed to British colonialism have been examined to date. Finally, I present, based on analyses of recordings of informal conversations among Palauans, an initial portrait of the main linguistic characteristics of Palauan English, and assess the extent to which English is nativising in this small community. The illegal vaccine ring involved hundreds of people, and affected 24 provinces and cities, local media said. On Monday, news that a boy had died after a vaccination sparked more anger, though officials said there was no link to the Shandong scandal. China has seen several health and safety scandals in recent years. 'Isn't this genocide?' The illegal vaccine ring was said to have been in operation since 2011. The ringleaders, who have been arrested, were allegedly a mother and a daughter who purchased the vaccines from licensed and unlicensed sources, and then sold them on to illegal agents or local disease control and prevention centres for high prices, reported Xinhua state news agency. The $88m (£61m) worth of vaccines were not adequately refrigerated nor transported in approved conditions. The potentially compromised vaccines could cause disability and death, Xinhua said. Though authorities had known about the ring since April last year, they only made the news public late on Friday when they issued a call demanding that suppliers come forward to help them trace potential victims. It sparked fury over the weekend as thousands of users on microblogging network Sina Weibo questioned the delay. Disponível em: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-35859927. Read the text below: The world is changing – it is getting both smaller and bigger at the same time. Our world shrinks as technologies now allow us to communicate both synchronously and asynchronously with peers around the world. Conversely, the explosion of information now available to us expands our view of the world. As a result of the ability to communicate globally and the information explosion, education must change. The current teaching paradigm of the teacher as the possessor and transferor of information is shifting to a new paradigm of the teacher as a facilitator or coach. This new teacher will provide contextual learning environments that engage students in collaborative activities that will require communications and access to information that only technology can provide. Unfortunately, we don’t have to look hard to find teachers utilizing new technological tools to replicate old educational models. For example, most uses of distance education employ the same instructor delivering the same lecture to the same audience, only now the audience can be larger. This distance education model does nothing to address the concept of lifelong learning. This traditional model still places the student in a passive role, merely absorbing as much information as possible. Instead, more collaborative models of distance education could be employed. According to the text, consider the following statements: I. New technologies help students to interact with each other simultaneously; however educators have not adapted to the new learning environment yet. II. Information technology provides educators with new tools, as videoconferencing, so that they are able to deliver lectures to larger audiences, what enhances learning. III. New technologies allow educators to create situations in which students have contact with other cultures, learn about other realities, interact and share knowledge. IV. Contextual learning environments guided by educators and assisted by information technology help students to engage in exchanging of experiences and developing critical thinking. V. Internet helps more students to absorb information. The educator’s role is to provide students with the appropriate learning environment to acquire this information. : Mark the right alternative Resposta Selecionada: c.
