Introduction
Probably at no other time there has been such an activity in publishing guitar music than
in the �rst two decades of the 19th century. Only comparatively few of these publications
survived in modern editions, among them the works of the most prominent representatives
of their time: Giuliani, Carulli and Sor. The works of others are almost unknown these days
and have not seen a new edition since their very �rst edition almost 200 years ago. These
works include solo works and chamber music. Particularly, there are a lot duo works for
melody instrument (violin or 
ute) and guitar, but also works for larger ensembles or with
piano are to be found.
This literature has not been written as concert works but for being played in the homes of
the gentle society. The numerous amateur guitarists of our days can enrich their pool of
19th century music with the works which have led a silent life in libraries for so many a year.
Some charming gems can be found between these works.
This edition tries to make long forgotten pieces of guitar music available for todays amateur
guitarists. The edition keeps as close as possible to the original prints. Only abvious mistakes
have been corrected.
Meissonier's Serenade for Guitar and Violin
There are two brothers Meissonier who are known to have composed for the guitar: Antoine
Meissonier, born 8. Dez. 1783 and Joseph Meisonnier, born 1790. Both wre born in
Marseille. 1814 Antoine founded in Paris his own musical publishing company, in which also
his younger brother Bruder joined. Both Meissoniers wrote duos for violin and guitar. The
serenade in this edition does not mention the �rst name of its composer so that it is not
clear which of the two brothers wrote it. The piece was not published by the Meissoniers.
In this serenade the guitar does not only have the part of a solely acompanying instrument,
as in so many pieces of this genre, but at least in the second movement the main melody
moves between the two instruments.
This edition is based on a print of the �rst edition in the collection of the Stadt- u. Univ.-Bibl.
Frankfurt/Main.

in einer Zeit, in der viele Amateure die Gitarre als Instrument zum h

auslichen Musizieren

atzen wissen, bieten sie einen reichhaltigen Vorrat von angenehmer Musik, die oftmals
sehr reizvolle E�ekte zu bieten hat.
Wir wollen mit dieser Edition einen Teil dieses Vorrates f

ur den heutigen Amateur aus den
Bibliotheken holen. Der Satz h

alt sich dabei weitgehendst an die Originaldrucke. O�ensicht-
liche Setzfehler wurden allerdings stillschweigend berichtigt.
Meissoniers Serenade f

ur Gitarre und Violine
Zwei Br

uder Meissonier sind als Komponisten f

ur die Gitarre hervorgetreten: Antoine Meis-
sonier, geb. 8. Dez. 1783 und Joseph Meisonnier, geb. 1790. Beide stammen aus Marseille.
Antoine gr

undete 1814 in Paris einen Musikverlag, in dem auch sein j

ungerer Bruder mit
eintrat. Von beiden Meissoniers sind Duos f

ur Violine und Gitarre bekannt. Die hier vorlie-
gende Serende nennt leider nicht den Vornamen des Komponisten, der sich so leider nicht
eindeutig bestimmen l

a�t. Sie ist auch nicht in dem Verlag der beiden Br

uder erschienen.
Die Gitarre pr

asentiert sich in der Serenade nicht nur als Begleitinstrument, wie in so vielen
St

ucken dieses Genres, sondern nimmt der Violine zumindest im zweiten Satz Phrasen im
Wechselspiel ab

furt/Main.
