Unidade 1 Referência textual I. Quais as pistas no texto que lhe ajudaram a responder a pergunta ante- rior? Discuta com um colega. II. Observe o seguinte trecho retirado do início do texto: O pronome I encontrado no trecho acima se refere a Martim Raistlin, o autor do texto. Agora, responda a seguinte pergunta: 1. No trecho selecionado, temos também a omissão do item referencial the sound antes do referente still worth listening to (em português, vale a pena ouvir). ** OAP (Old age pensioner): pessoa aposentada por idade. 2. Releia o texto e sublinhe as alternativas corretas. a. Those who still labour under the delusion that the Beckhams are not TV sitcom characters but real people will have seized upon the storyline of Victoria rushing out to buy David a £500,000 necklace and matching earrings for his birthday as a sign that the poor man is officially out of the doghouse and that we can all look forward to a new series in the autumn. What no one will be raising an eyebrow about (apart from easily amused writers of letters to The Times, pointing out that diamonds are supposed to be a girl’s best friend!) is why she couldn’t have just got him some nice driving gloves or a hand-tooled pipe rack. Ever since that infamous early episode (‘The one where David wears a skirt on holiday and wonders what all the fuss is about’) Beckham has been dogged in his determination to play the devil’s advocate for dodgy manhood - the poncey haircuts, the pouty photoshoots, that terrible Alice band, the insistence on following Posh* around fashion shows like some gigolo bag-carrier (no offence, Dave, but have you never heard of golf?). Having said that, it did work: what Beckham gets away with today in terms of behaving like a big nelly, the rest of us will be getting away with tomorrow. I’m too old to start wearing diamonds myself (I got one of those cinema passes for my own birthday that make you feel like an OAP**), but as a role model for our sons, Beckham is at least presentable. He wouldn’t turn up for a job interview with a big hook through his cheek. We now read that men are to be targeted with a range of pink summer wearables by the high-street fashion chains ‘cashing in’ on the growing phenomenon of ‘metrosexuality’, which according to all features pages has seen swathes of hairy-arsed humanity discovering moisturisers, eyebrow tweezers and a love of shopping. MINI-TEST Source: <www.reuters.com>. Wed Jun 2, 2004 By Francois Thomazeau PARIS (Reuters) – The old Roland Garros magic kept Gustavo Kuerten going until the quarter-finals at the French Open this year. But after his defeat to David Nalban- dian Wednesday, the Brazilian was forced to admit that a nagging hip injury might mean playing tennis would always be a painful experience for him. “For me, what can stop my pain is if I stop playing,” he said after his 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 loss to the Argentine. The three-times French Open champion has been hampered by the injury for three years and since he had surgery on it in 2002, he has never rediscovered his best form. Kuerten said the pain had been less of a problem at Roland Garros because of his will and motivation to do well in the tournament he won in 1997, 2000 and 2001. But despite his run to the last eight this year, which included defeating world number one Roger Federer in the third round, Kuerten said the injury had contributed to his exit from his favorite grand slam. “I think the main problem is my own problem, my hip,” said the 27-year- old, before adding that his opponent’s game had mattered just as much. 1. The main topic of the text is a. ( ) Kuerten’s last victory in a tennis tournament in France. b. ( ) Kuerten’s tactics to win a tennis tournament in France. c. ( ) Kuerten will continue playing tennis in spite of the pain in the hips. c. ( ) Kuerten will have a surgery to solve his physical problem in one or two years. d. ( ) Kuerten improved his perfomance after feeling the pain in the hips. e. ( ) Kuerten was able to beat Roger Federer because he did not feel the pain in the hips. 3. Scientists experimenting with a nine-and-a half-year-old border collie in Germany have discovered that the dog knows more than 200 words for different objects and can learn a new word after being shown an unfamiliar item just one time. The dog’s ability shows that advanced word recognition skills are present in animals other than humans, and probably evolved independently of language and speech. Rico, the border collie, was taught to retrieve different objects by his owners, who placed various balls and toys around their apartment and asked Rico to fetch specific ones. Rico gradually increased his vocabulary to about 200 words that he could match to objects. To make sure Rico’s owners weren’t giving him subconscious cues that helped him find the right item, Julia Fischer and her colleagues at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, tested Rico’s knowledge in a lab, where he retrieved 37 out of 40 items correctly. “Rico’s ‘vocabulary size’ is comparable to that of language-trained apes, dolphins, sea lions, and parrots,” the authors write in their report, published today in the journal Science. Marianne Thoms, of Levelland, Texas, was released from the hospital and returned home Wednesday, three days after giving birth to the girls at Covenant Medical Center in the northwest Texas city of Lubbock. “We were glad to get them into this world,” Thoms said in a telephone interview. She added that the pregnancy was pretty easy, even though it had been about 28 years since she last gave birth. Hospital officials said they did not know whether there were other cases of a surrogate mother giving birth to her own grandchildren. Launched in August 2003, Spitzer surveys its galactic surroundings using instruments that detect infrared radiation. The telescope recently observed a star located some 420 light- years away known as CoKu Tau 4 and found a clearing in the dusty disk surrounding it, which could be caused by a planet gathering material as it forms – like a broom sweeping across a dirty floor. This potential planet is less than a million years old – the age of CoKu Tau 4 – making it a mere infant compared to our own 4.5-billion-year-old planet. Spitzer also spied two of the faintest planet-forming disks ever seen in a stellar nursery, 13,700 light-years from Earth. Dubbed RCW 49, the region encompasses some 300 newborn stars. “Preliminary data suggest that all 300 or more stars harbor disks,” remarks team member Ed Churchwell of the University of Wisconsin in Madison, “but so far we’ve only looked closely at two.” The additional details that Spitzer can offer about planet-forming disks should provide scientists with a better understanding of how solar systems like ours evolve – Sarah Graham. 2. In less than a decade the Internet in Brazil has surpassed classrooms and research facilities as a way to reach millions of users. According to Brazil’s Ministry of Science and Technology, the number of people worldwide who are linked to the Internet is expected to reach close to 400 million in 2005, accounting for more than $620 billion in Internet commerce. The Internet was offered to the general public in Brazil in 1995 by the Ministry and more than 19.7 million Brazilians use the service today. According to Nielsen-NetRAtings, only in 2002, the number of Brazilians with access to the Internet grew by 2.1 million. The study says that 45 percent of people 16 year old or older living in a house with a telephone have access to the Internet. 14.3 million Brazilians access the Internet from home. In a presentation given at a conference in Milan in January 2002, Juarez Quadros do Nascimento, then Ministry of Communications executive secretary, discussed the changes in the telecommunications industry since the privatization and nationwide service in Brazil leading to a 19 percent growth rate in software sales over the last decade. According to Nascimento, the information technology sector grew by 13 percent annually from 1993 to 1999 with help from legislators and the Brazilian National Bank for Social and Economic Development. The convergence of technology, software and service price drops and Internet growth creates a hot bed for domain name registration. Brazilians registered more than 445 million domain names in 2001 and the number increases by almost five percent monthly. Experts predict that by 2006, nearly 42 million users from all classes will be logging in to do business on-line. Brazil is the largest Web site host of all countries in Latin America, according to the Ministry of Communication. Source: <www.brazzil.com>, April 2003. 2. By Hilary WilceBy Hilary WilceBy Hilary WilceBy Hilary WilceBy Hilary Wilce 20 May 2004 How do you get children to study languages in a country that believes that everyone can understand English so long as it’s shouted loudly enough, and where the number of pupils taking a language is shrinking faster than you can say Mon Dieu? The Government’s answer has been to hatch a kind of linguistic “theory of everything”, putting together the mis-matched halves of primary-pupil energy and secondary-student disaffection into a policy which aims to turn Britain’s schoolchildren into a nation of enthusiastic – but voluntary – linguists. Under the scheme, seven-year-olds are to be introduced to a second language in primary school, while 14-year-olds are to be allowed to drop it at secondary level. This will, so the theory goes, lead to a bit of a slump in the number of over-14s taking languages for a while. But after that, it will pick up fast again because the primary children who have been speaking Spanish or French or German for years will actively want to carry on. And, to help with the continuity – and to get away from traditional exams – levels of competence will be graded like music exams. But can this strategy actually bring about fundamental changes in such a stubbornly resistant area? The policy has got underway smoothly enough. But many people question whether it will turn the British public on to languages. Graham Lane, leader of the 150 local education authorities in England, fears that without “real political will” behind it, it is never going to be effective. “You need something on the scale of the drive on numeracy and literacy. If Tony Blair and the Cabinet decided, like the French have done for their schools, that everyone is going to speak another language fluently by 18, it could be done.” Lid King, head of the strategy, says that things cannot be rushed, even if the Government has promised that every primary-age pupil will have a language “opportunity” by 2010. “There is no point getting lots of overseas assistants in if schools are not yet ready for them,” he says. “Our biggest challenge is going to be to build capacity in a reasonable enough period of time to shift the paradigm”. BRAZILIAN RAP THE RHYMES BY AFRICAN-AMERICANS GET ATRANSLATION The Hip Hop culture appeared in Brazil in the early 80s (shortly after its emergence in the U.S.), more strongly in São Paulo. It arrived in Brazil by the hands of teams that arranged soul balls and parties, and through albums and magazines that could be found in the downtown area. The first ones to appear were the break dancers, who were kicked out of the region by shop owners and the police, landing on the São Bento subway station. Soon there was a clash between break dancers and rappers (also known as babblers), who were just starting to craft their verses and had to move away to Roosevelt square. Before long, they became the strongest faction within hip hop in São Paulo, and some of the break dancers were turned into rappers. The first registration of Brazilian rap is the compilation Hip Hop Cultura de Rua (Eldorado, 1988). It featured tracks by Thayde & DJ Hum, MC Jack, Código 13 and others. It was the Brazilian debut of a style based upon rhyming speeches delivered over dance bases sampled from funk albums, with occasional scratches. Nevertheless, the rap aesthetics had already been tried a year before on a radio hit: Kátia Flávia, by Fausto Fawcett & Os Robôs Efêmeros (from Rio de Janeiro). The scratches had also been used in 1987 in the album Estação Primeira, by the band Gueto, from São Paulo. Still in 1988, another rap compilation was put out in São Paulo: Consciência Black (first release by the label Zimbabwe). In this compilation, there was a group that would make history in the following years: Racionais MCs. With songs like Pânico na Zona Sul (Panic on the South Side) and Tempos Difíceis (Hard Times), Ice Blue, Mano Brown, Edy Rock and KL Jay provided their audiences with a view on the very hard life of young, poor black men in the suburbs of São Paulo, lost between crime and social distress. In the early 90s, Thayde & DJ Hum and Racionais were established as the most serious and important rappers in São Paulo, often involved in campaigns for awareness, promotion and unification of the hip hop culture in Brazil.
