Pneumat Systems is also a tool for you to use. We are here to help and if you have a question, comment, or idea in regards to bin cleaning we encourage you to call. We have cleaned a lot of bins, so we may have some ideas to help you clean your bins or silos, but we are always learning and trying to get better. So, call away, and together we can make the serious job of cleaning silos safer faster easier. WHAT IS A BINWHIP? The Pneumat BinWhip is an ALL HYDRAULIC powered bin cleaning system. Working from an opening in the top of the vessel, your Series 9000/9250/9500 BinWhip will effectively clear obstructions and sweep down many different sizes and styles of bulk storage containers - all with no need for confined space entry. Once set up the BinWhip acts like a large scale “weed trimmer” that can be maneuvered around inside the bin to knock down material that is hung-up. The BinWhip does not simply go down the middle with big sweeps that reach out to the walls on all sides (long whips like this become tangled). The “whips” stick out from the cutting head approximately 2’, so about a 4’ cylinder is taken out each time the BinWhip is run up and down inside the bin. Movement of the boom up - down, and side - side, allows you to position the cutting head at the hang-up, while the hose reel moves the head up and down. “BinWhip” will be used in this manual to describe all Series 9000/9250/9500 BinWhips. WHAT CAME IN THE BOX? Everything you need, except electricity, is included inside the crate your Bin- Whip shipped in. SAFETY The BinWhip was designed to make a dangerous job safer, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to pay attention to basic safety procedures. Safety starts with paying the proper attention to the task at hand and what is going on around you. Take time to observe your environment BEFORE you start. 1. First and foremost follow all safety procedures for your facility. 2. When you see this safety-alert symbol be aware to the potential of personal injury 3. Read this manual to learn how to safely operate this equipment and its controls. No one should operate without proper instruction. 4. Keep your BinWhipin proper working condition. Unauthorized modifications to the machine may impair the function and/or safety and affect the life of the ma- chine. Please consult Pneumat Systems before attempting. 5. Disconnect all power before servicing any part of the equipment. 6. All electrical connections should be made only by authorized personnel and should be inspected regularly. 7. Release all pressure in hydraulic lines and all tension in cables or hose before servicing or when leaving the equipment for an extended period of time. 8. When shutting down servicing or leaving equipment for an extended period of time, turn power unit off, release all remaining hydraulic pressure by moving the control valves forward and backwards. Also, relieve all tension on cables and main hydraulic hose. 9. Failure to follow these precautions may affect the factory warranty. 4. SET-UP PROCEDURES SET-UP REQUIREMENTS All operation of the BinWhip is done from the bin deck. This requires that there is enough relatively flat area for the equipment and an operator. The BinWhip breaks down into components for ease of transporting to the top of the bin. An access hole of at least 14x14 inches will be needed to get the boom and whiphead into bin. The access may be round, square or rectangular. If the access hole is too large for the BinWhip to straddle the opening, some type of beam (i.e., channel I-beam) can be affixed to the bin top such that the BinWhip can be attached. The access hole should not be at an angle of more than 15° from flat. ELECTRICAL HOOK-UP (See Fig. 2A &2B) Once all the equipment is to the top of the bin, electrical power should be con- nected to the hydraulic power unit. You will need hydraulic power to make sure things are in the right position for set-up. CAUTION! All electrical connections should be made by a facility electrician or other au- thorized personnel only. Fig. 1 Page 5 Series 9500/9250/9000 BinWhip Technical Manual 6 5 4 3 2 1 9 8 7 J J T’STAT LOW VOLTAGE LINE 6 5 4 3 2 1 9 8 7 HIGH VOLTAGE LINE J T’STAT J Get the electricity hooked up - PROPERLY The best way to ensure that it is done properly is to use a authorized electri- cian. Explain to him/her what you are going to be doing and share this manual with them. What you would like from them, is safe reliable connection of 3-phase electricity to power the hydraulic power unit. Follow your facility’s guidelines on proper electric motor hook-up and switching. The electric motor for the Hydraulic Power Unit is 7.5 HP 230/460 VOLT 3-PHASE explosion-proof motor. When possible, 460 Volt power should be supplied to reduce the amperage draw. The wiring diagrams for both high and low voltage configurations are located on the inside of the electrical box cover on the motor (See Fig. 1). NOTE: Make sure you wire the motor in the proper configuration for the voltage you are hooking-up (damage to the motor can occur if wired wrong). (See Fig. 2A and 2B) There is a proper direction the motor must spin in order to pump correctly. To determine the proper rotation, remove the screw holding the plastic orange cover on the pump mount flange and remove it so you can see the rotation of the coupling inside. (See Fig. 3). Locate the arrow on the pump label that signi- fies proper direction and make sure the coupling is turning in that direction. Reverse the rotation of the motor if not correct. NOTE: Refer to electrician for proper method of reversing motor rotation. When putting a disconnect in the power supply line make sure it complies with your safety guidelines. Position the Bin Mount over the opening (Fig 4) Position the bin mount/post assembly face (pulleys) down with the end of the post sitting over the opening. Connect the Boom to the Bin Mount Post (Fig. 5, 6 & 7) Attach the cable yoke on the boom to the cable on the bin mount with the snap hook (See Fig. 5). Lower the boom into the hole, pulley end first and with the cables and cable ears pointing towards the bin mount. Make sure you have a firm grip on the boom handle so you can control the boom while hooking it up. Slide the boom clevis onto the end of the post on the bin mount so the holes line up. Slip the boom pin through the holes and secure it with the attached pin (See Fig. 6). Slide the entire assembly towards the hole and slowly lower it in, holding se- curely onto the rails at the top of the bin mount (See Fig. 7). Attach Bin Mount Hold-down (Fig. 8 & 9) Position the bin mount so that you can reach the most material within the 180° rotation radius the BinWhip has from side to side. The BinWhip will not neces- sarily reach everything with it’s first positioning, but it can be easily repositioned by rotating the entire bin mount on the opening. Fig. 3 Fig. 4 Fig. 5 Fig. 6 Fig. 2B Fig. 2A BinWhip Technical Manual Series 9500/9250/9000 Page 6 When the bin mount is aligned, take the hold down assembly and attach the safety chain to the bin mount frame. Lower the hold down into the opening and align the tie down bolts with the two holes in the bottom of the bin mount (See Fig. 8). Slide the tie down bolts through the holes and pull them upward until the cross member hits the bottom of the bin deck. NOTE: Depending on the bin top thickness you may have to shorten or lengthen the threaded rods. Secure the tie-downs with the 3/4” nuts and washers provided. The cross- member should “clamp” on both sides to the bin top as you tighten the nuts. Do not over-tighten the nuts. They should be snug so the hold-down cross member will not move out of place (See Fig. 9). Mount Hose Reel onto Bin Mount (Fig. 10) With the unit securely mounted to the bin opening you can now place the hose reel assembly onto the bin mount. NOTE: If the bin top does not allow for easy maneuvering of equipment the hose may be unrolled from the reel. (See the Hose Removal Procedure below). Lift the hose reel onto the top of the bin mount and set it onto the support rails, lining up the retainer pins with the slots in the rails (See Fig. 10). Drop the pins into the rails and slide forward to secure. Hydraulic Hook-up Procedure (Fig. 11) Connect all hoses with the Power Unit off Make sure all Control Valves are in the center “neutral” position and both flow control valves are turned all the way in (clockwise) Connect the BOOM UP/DOWN Control Circuit (See Fig. 12) Hook-up the BOOM UP/DOWN Control circuit (this block is labeled “BOOM UP/DOWN”). This circuit controls the up/down movement of the hydraulic cylinder on the bin mount. Take the 10 ft hydraulic hose with the “red” color coding at the ends and attach the “red” Male Quick Disconnect (QD) to the corresponding “red” marked Female QD on the Hydraulic Manifold Assy. Then connect the remaining Male QD to the Female QD directly below the “red” Female QD. Take the other end of the “red” marked hose, this end has Female QD’s, and attach them to the corresponding Male QD’s on the rear of the Bin Mount. Match up the color codes like in the previous step. These hoses can be hooked up in the opposite orientation which will reverse the cylinder motion, this is an operator preference. Connect the HOSE UP/DOWN Control Circuit (See Fig. 13) Hook-up the HOSE UP/DOWN Control Circuit (this block is labeled “HOSE UP/DOWN”). This circuit controls the up/down movement of the hose/whip- head. Take the 10 ft hydraulic hose with the “yellow” color coding at the ends and attach the “yellow” Male Quick Disconnect (QD) to the corresponding “yellow” marked Female QD on the Hydraulic Manifold Assy. Then connect the remain- ing Male QD to the Female QD directly below the “yellow” Female QD. Take the other end of the “yellow” marked hose, this endhas Female QD’s, and attach them to the corresponding Male QD’s on the Hose Reel hydraulic motor. Match up the color codes like in the previous step. These hoses must be hooked up in this orientation for proper operation. This circuit controls the rotation speed of the whiphead/whips. Take the 10 ft hydraulic hose with the “green” color coding at the ends and attach the “green” Male Quick Disconnect (QD) to the corresponding “green” marked Female QD on the Hydraulic Manifold Assy. Then connect the remain- ing Male QD to the Female QD directly below the “green” Female QD. Take the other end of the “green” marked hose, this end has Female QD’s, and attach them to the corresponding Male QD’s on the Hose Reel rotary mani- fold. Match up the color codes like in the previous step. These hoses can be reversed to spin the whiphead in the opposite direction. Connect Hydraulic Power Unit to Control Valve Block With all of the connections made to each of the function circuits, the connection should now be made between the Hydraulic Power Unit and the Control Valve Block. Take the 15 ft hydraulic hose with three hoses inside the sheathing and marked with the “blue” color coding at the ends and attach the “blue” Female Quick Disconnect (QD) to the corresponding “blue” marked Male QD on the Hydraulic Manifold Assy (See Fig. 15). Then connect the remaining Large Male QD on the hose to the large Female QD and connect the small Female QD on the hose to the small male QD. Take the other end of the “blue” marked hose, and attach them to the corresponding QD’s on the Hydraulic Power Unit (See Fig. 16). 5. OPERATION – CONTROLS LET’S REVIEW THE CONTROLS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS (FIG. 17) The BinWhip hydraulic controls are combined into one modular control Mani- fold with (3) individual valve blocks, each controls a function on the BinWhip. One block controls the BOOM UP/DOWN function, another controls the HOSE REEL ROTATION, and the third controls the WHIPHEAD ROTATION SPEED. Each of these blocks is labeled with it’s function on the front surface CAUTION! - A full understanding of these controls is necessary before you operate the BinWhip. BOOM UP/DOWN CONTROL (See Fig. 18) Movement of the boom up and down is controlled by the valve block labeled “BOOM UP/DOWN. It has a SPRING-CENTERED directional valve. NOTE: A spring centered valve is one that when moved from the center position and released, will “spring” back to the center (neutral) position. The actual boom up/down movement is provided by the hydraulic cylinder attached to the Bin Mount. The actual direction the cylinder moves depends on how the hoses from the valve block to the cylinder are hooked-up. If hooked up according to the color coding, the boom will raise when the valve is pushed toward the Hydraulic Manifold handle. Fig. 14 Fig. 15 Fig. 16 BinWhip Technical Manual Series 9500/9250/9000 Page 8 Hose Reel Rotation Control (See Fig. 19 & 20) Movement of the Hose Reel controls the up/down movement of the whiphead. It is controlled by the valve block labeled “HOSE UP/DOWN”, it has a DÉ- TENTED directional valve, and a rotary flow control. NOTE: A détented control valve will remain in the position it is placed (up/neutral/down), and must be returned the middle (neutral) position manually. The hose connection for this function must be hooked-up according to the color coding to function properly, the hose must come up when the valve is pushed toward the handle on the Hydraulic Manifold Assy. The reason for this is that the rotation speed of the reel can only be varied when the valve is pushed toward the handle, this is done using the flow control knob- (see below). With the control valve pushed toward the handle, the rate at which the hose/ whiphead comes up can be varied by turning the flow control knob located on the front of the “HOSE UP/DOWN” block. Turning the knob all the way in (clockwise) will stop the hose reel rotation and turning it out (counter-clock- wise) will speed up the reel rotation. When pulling the valve away from the handle the hose reel will rotate at max speed. This allows the whiphead to be raised at a controlled speed and lowered quickly to prepare for the next clean- ing pass. Whiphead Rotation Control (See Fig. 21) Rotation speed of the whiphead is controlled by the valve block labeled “WHIPHEAD SPEED”, it only contains a flow control valve. The speed at which the whiphead rotates can be varied by turning this flow control knob located on the front of the block. Turning the knob all the way in (clockwise) will slow and finally stop the rotation and turning it out (counter-clockwise) will speed up the rotation. The recommended cutting speed is approx 1.5 - 2 turns counter- clockwise from fully off. This will need to be varied depending on the type of flail being used and the hardness of the material being cleaned. The speed should be varied until maximum amount of material is being removed without excessive whip or chain wear. Boom Rotation-Ratchet Control (See Fig. 22) The boom is rotated from side-to-side by cranking or ratcheting the crank handle that can be mounted on either side of the bin mount depending on ac- cess. Total side to side movement is slightly less than 180°. Hose Removal Procedure (IF NEEDED) In situations where the hose reel cannot be easily moved with the hose rolled up, it should be unrolled, and removed if necessary. To do this turn the power- unit on and move the hose reel control valve to the down position and have someone pull the hose out of the way as it is unrolled. With the hose com- pletely unrolled shut off the valve and turn the power unit off. The hydraulic hose can be disconnected by releasing the two quick connectors inside of the hose reel drum. When the hose reel is in position on the bin mount this proce- dure must be reversed. Mounting Whip/Chain Sets to the Whiphead (Fig. 23, 24 & 25) There are five different types of flails that can be mounted to the whiphead. They are attached by first loosening the eight socket head bolts that attach the Fig. 18 Fig. 19 Fig. 22 Fig. 21 Fig. 20 Page 9 Series 9500/9250/9000 BinWhip Technical Manual whiphead cover to the whiphead. Loosen the bolts enough to allow the rope to pass through the hole. With the desired amount of whip extending the bolts can be tightened. Make sure all whips are installed in the same direction. Knuckle and Star Knuckle Whips (See Fig. 24) are used for most cleaning and cutting jobs. They are a plastic coated rope with UHMW “knuckles” that dig out the hung-up material without damaging bin walls. The Star Knuckle Whips have an additional free-floating star shaped knuckle for faster material removal. Sweep Whips (See Fig. 24) are also a plastic coated rope that sweeps mate- rial from walls and corners, but do not have the knuckles for material removal. They attach the same as knuckle and star knuckle whips. Bronze Chain Whips (See Fig. 25) are used for very hard hung-up material that would take too long for knuckle whips to remove. They are attached by threading a 2-1/2” flat head cap screw into bottom of the whip head, through the last link on chain and securing with lock nuts. Steel Chain Whips are used for NON-EXPLOSIVE, very hard hung-up mate- rial, that would take too long for knucklewhips to remove. They are attached by threading a 2-1/2” flat head cap screw into bottom of the whip head, through the last link on chain and securing with lock nuts. Attach Whiphead to end of Hose (See Fig. 26) Make sure all control valves are in the neutral position and the flow control knobs are turned completely clockwise. Then turn on the Power Unit and pull the HOSE UP/DOWN control valve away from the handle. This will let hose off of the reel. Pull approx 5 ft of hose off, this will allow enough slack In the hose to install the whiphead. Place the whiphead next to the bin mount. Remove the two socket head screws that attach the cover to the whip head and re- move the cover. Wipe the couplers clean on both the whiphead and the upper receiver. Place the upper receiver onto the top of the whiphead and align the couplers. When they are aligned carefully push down on the upper receiver to get the couplers engaged. Attach the upper receiver using the same bolts that held the cover. NOTE: Tighten bolts securely and evenly so the couplers go together straight, then slide the plastic cone over the top of the whiphead. Lower the Whiphead through the Bin Opening (See Fig. 27) To allow for enough room to lower the whiphead through the bin opening, turn the post and boom all the way to one side by cranking the ratchet assy. Moving to the left side will move the hydraulic lines on the cylinder to a more conveinent position. Now lower the whip head between the legs of the bin mount down into the opening of the bin SLOWLY by hand until all the slack in the hose is taken up (See Fig. 27). Run the whiphead down about 5 feet below the pulley on the end of the boom with the hose reel control. Fig. 23 Fig. 24 Fig. 25 Fig. 26 BinWhip Technical Manual Series 9500/9250/9000 Page 10 Picking up the Whiphead with the Boom (See Fig. 28) Use the ratchet on the bin mount to turn the boom back to the center posi- tion, lining up the pulley set and cylinder with the whip hose. Raise the boom SLOWLY with the BOOM CONTROL valve making sure the hose guides on the end of the boom “corral” the hose onto the hose pulley at the end of the boom. Once the hose is between the boom ears pull the hose behind either the left or right pulley on the bin mount and flip the hose guide over to hold it in place. NOTE: Place the hose over the pulley that allows for the least obstruc- tion (i.e. between hose and cable, or hose and hose guide). 6. CLEANING ORGANIZE YOUR WORKSPACE Organize your workspace so can that you can easily reach and operate the controls while you are looking down into the bin. GET A GOOD LOOK INSIDE (IT MIGHT BE YOUR LAST FOR AWHILE) Take a good look into the bin and take a mental picture of what the bin looks like. Think about where you want to start and how you are going to start to at- tack the build-up. REMEMBER - there must be some type of flow channel, to the bin discharge open so that the material you knock loose with the BinWhip has a place to go - outside of the bin hopefully. PLAN YOUR ATTACK Read through the basic techniques described below and plan where you want to start, how far up to you will work and where will you move to next. BASIC TECHNIQUES Make sure the flow channel is open all the way to the discharge at the bottom and large enough so chunks won’t plug it. If there is no flow channel one will need to be opened. Depending on your bin, often the best way to create a flow channel for product is to use the Pneumat BinDrill. A place for loose material to flow should be at least 12” or more in diameter. 1. Work 10-15 ft from the top of the material (See Fig. 29) 2. Slowly work the same groove from bottom to top working towards the wall 3. Keep side pressure on the hose and whiphead (See Fig. 30) 4. After reaching the wall rotate the boom to start cutting another groove 5. Whiphead Rotation can be reversed to reach different areas 6. Keep taking out pie section like portions until all material is cleared 7. Move down another 10-15 and repeat 10-15 FT Fig. 29 Fig. 30 Fig. 27 Fig. 28 Page 11 Series 9500/9250/9000 BinWhip Technical Manual DON’T BURY THE WHIPHEAD- BUT IF YOU DO - DO THIS DO NOT try to pick up the whiphead with the boom or hose reel. IMEDIATELY drop the boom down to relieve pressure Shut the whiphead rotation off Tie the hose off with a heavy rope or strap Run hose out to relieve tension in hose the hose on the reel Drain bin, at-least until the whiphead is freed from the material SHUTTING DOWN 1. With the whip head off, raise it to slightly below the end of the boom (leaving 2-3 feet of hose between the boom pulley and the top of the whip). 2. SLOWLY drop the boom down making sure the hydraulic cylinder fully extends and the boom is hanging straight down. 3. Swing the hose guide out of the way and remove the hose from behind the pulley. 4. Turn the boom and cylinder as far out of the way as possible. 5. Carefully raise the whiphead to within 2-3 feet of the bin opening. NOTE: Make sure the whiphead does not catch on the end of the boom during ascension. Pull the whip- head out of the bin with the hose by hand and unhook it. 6. Run the extra hose onto the Hose Reel until the cone is resting against the reel. 7. Disconnect the electrical power to the power unit. 8. Move each of the valves both directions from the center position and then back to release any hydraulic pressure that may have been trapped. 9. Unhook all hydraulic lines and plug the ends together to keep contaminates out during storage. 10. Return the boom and cylinder to the center rotation position. This will relieve any torque on the boom connecting pin when the unit is dismantled. 11. Remove the hose reel from the bin mount. 12. Loosen the nuts on the hold down and remove the clamp. 13. Gently tilt the unit out of the hole (laying the bin mount/post assembly on its front-cylin- der side down). NOTE: The boom will still be hanging in the bin at this point. 14. Holding securely onto the handle of the boom, remove the cross pin disengage the boom from the post. 15. Lift the boom out of the bin. Hold onto the handle until you can get a firm grip on the cable sling and disconnect the main cable. 16. Clean all pieces as necessary and return to their proper location for storage. 1 2 3 Fig. 31 BinWhip Technical Manual Series 9500/9250/9000 Page 12 The BinWhip does not require much maintenance but a few things need to be done to ensure long life and performance of your bin cleaning system. 7. MAINTENANCE HYDRAULIC POWER UNIT (See Fig. 32 & 33) The fluid level in the reservoir should be checked daily and filled if neces- sary. To check the level- look at the sight gauge on the front of the reservior. The oil should be somewhere between visible at the bottom, to the middle of the gauge when the oil is cold (when oil is warm the level should be from the middle to the top of the gauge. If low, fill to the correct level and replace the oil fill plug. NOTE: The oil supplied with the unit is food grade hydraulic oil and can be purchased from Pneumat Systems. The oil filter on the unit should be replaced every 6 months during heavy use or yearly regardless of the amount of use. This protects against hydraulic com- ponent damage due to dirt and condensation contaminating the oil. Clean the quick connectors before and after each use to reduce oil contamination. BIN MOUNT (See Fig. 34) During use, grease the main post weekly. Put two pumps of grease into each grease zerk on the post. Occasionally grease the positioning gear and worm gear to aid in boom positioning. HOSE REEL (See Fig. 35) During use, grease the hose reel shaft bushing daily. Put 1-2 pumpsof grease into the zerk on top of the left hose reel bracket. Check the fluid level in the gearbox weekly during use. The fill/oil level plug is located on the outside of the gearbox above and to the right of the shaft. The hex socket plug must be removed and the fluid level should be at the bottom of the hole. If low add 80W-90 gear oil to fill it to the proper level. WHIPHEAD The hydraulic whiphead needs very little maintenance. The hydraulic couplers should be wiped cleaned before, and after each use. After each use the whip- head body should be removed and any material inside should be cleaned out. Also make sure the top cover is on the whip head when not in use.
