* March, 11th 2010 Types of texts Purpose: ►Recognize different types of texts ►Be able to write them clearly in a coherence way * Narrative text The function of this text is to describe facts happenings in a sequence of time. It usually has an introduction, a climax and an end. * The components of a narrative: Introduction: Introduction: the time, charachters, place, facts. Climax: The peak of the conflicts, at this time the problem has to be solved. The end: It’s the solution; can be: happy, sad, surprisingly, funny, etc. * Example of a narrative I was arriving at the bank this morning when I saw the thieves inside it. I stopped and listened to them ordering people to keep silence. Then one of them started shooting at a man. At that moment the police arrived and it became a disaster. The thieves shot at everyone. I was scared so I left the place. Hours passed I was at home and then I saw the news and it is said that the thieves were all arrested. * Argumentative text It’s the text that shows the author’s opinions. They can be positive, negative or both. It intends to persuade. Sometimes the opinion is expressed without the phrases: I believe ... / I think ... / In my opinion cpd * The components of an argumentative text: Introduction Presents the main idea; the point of view. Development To develop the reasons that are behind a point of view, an opinion. Conclusion The last paragraph, it sums up the ideas presented and clearly shows the principal author’s opinion * Example of an argumentative The starvation The starvation has increased in all the world after 1990. In Brazil it is not different. In our country it happens because rich people often just think in their situation and because there are big social differences... As starvation is a global problem, to solve it is necessary ... Introduction development conclusion * Descriptive text The function of this text is to describe characteristics (physical, personality...) It can describe a place, a time or a person. It can even describe all above. * Example of a description 1)I’m Totia and my daughter is Mila. I’m 40 years old and she is 13. Mila is like me in many things. Phisycally, we are tall, thin and blonde. About our personality, we are generous, extrovert and self-confident. 2)I live in a very big house with 5 bedrooms, 2 kitchens and 2 living rooms... * Exercises 1)What kind of text is this? a) Then the wolf appeared. ‘Good morning’, said the wolf. ‘Good morning’, the little prince answered. ‘Who are you?’ b) Regular electric wire is made of metal, in which the atoms are arranged in net structures. c) It was a sunny day when Isaac Newton was lying under a tree in the garden of a college in Cambridge... d) There are different methods of anesthesia. Think it’s the best because when a gas is inhaled, it quickly reaches the air cells. * Exercises Now write you a small text that is: a)descriptive: you can describe a friend, a relative or yourself. b)argumentative: your opinion about being a teenager. c)narrative: write about your Carnival. Do it on a sheet of paper and give to the teacher next class.
