THE CHRISTMAS PRESENTS
One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. Every day, when she went to the
shops, she spent very little money. She bought the cheapest meat, the cheapest
vegetables. And when she was tired, she still walked round and round the shops
to find the cheapest food. She saved every cent possible.
Della counted the money again. There was no mistake. One dollar and eighty-
seven cents. That was all. And the next day was Christmas.
She couldn’t do anything about it. She could only sit down and cry. So she sat
there, in the poor little room, and she cried.
Della lived in this poor little room, in New York, with her husband, James
Dillingham Young. They also had a bedroom, and a kitchen and a bathroom – all
poor little rooms. James Dillingham Young was lucky, because he had a job, but it
was not a good job. These rooms took most of his money. Della tried to find work,
but times were bad, and there was no work for her. But when Mr James
Dillingham Young came home to his rooms, Mrs James Dillingham Young called
him “Jim” and put her arms around him. And that was good.
Della stopped crying and she washed her face. She stood by the window, and
looked out at a grey cat on a grey wall in the grey road. Tomorrow was Christmas
Day, and she had only one dollar and eighty-seven cents to buy Jim a Christmas
present. Her Jim. She wanted very much to buy him something really fine,
something to show how much she loved him.
Suddenly, Della turned round and ran over to look in the glass on the wall. Her
eyes were bright.
Now, the James Dillingham Youngs had two very special things. One was Jim’s
gold watch. It once belonged to his father, and, before that, to his grandfather.
The other special thing was Della’s hair.
Quickly, Della let down her beautiful, long hair. It fell down her back, and it was
almost like a coat around her. Then she put her hair up again, quickly. For a
second or two she stood still, and cried a little.
Then she put on her old brown coat, and her old brown hat, turned, and left the
room. She went downstairs and out into the road, and her eyes were bright.
She walked along by the shops, and stopped when she came to a door with
“Madame Eloise – Hair” on it.
Inside there was a fat woman. She did not look an Eloise.

Cusco is a city in southeastern Peru, near the Hutanay Valley (SacredValley) in
the Andes mountain range. It is the capital of Cusco Region. The city has a

population of about 300 000, triple the population it contained just 20 years ago.
Alternate spellings include Qusqu (in old Quechua), Cusco, (after the Spanish
arrived), and Qosqo current Quechua. Cusco is the preferred way to spell it in
Spanish.
Cusco was the capital of Tahuantinsuyu (or Inca Empire). The city was planned to
be shaped like a puma. The city had two areas: the hurin and hanan, which were
further divided to each be part of two of the four provinces of the Inca Empire:
Chinchasuyu (NW), Antisuyu (NE), Cuntisuyu (SW), and Collasuyu (SE).
A road led from each of these quarters to the corresponding quarter of the
empire. Each local leader was required to build a house in the city and live part of
the year in Cusco, but only in the quarter of Cusco that corresponded to the
quarter of the empire he had territory in.
According to Inca legend, the city was built by Sapa Inca Pachacuti, the man who
transformed the Kingdom of Cusco from a sleepy city-state into the vast empire of
Tahuantinsuyu. But archaeological evidence points to a slower, more organic
growth of the city beginning before Pachacutieven though he did initiate growth in
the city after defeating the Chancas as a monument to Incan glory. There was
however a city plan, and two rivers were channeled around the city.
Read the statements below concerning the text:
I. Cusco isn't located in the North of Peru.
II. Nowadays the population of Cusco is three times larger than it was two
decades ago.
III. There are alternate spellings for the word Cusco.
IV. Cusco was the capital of Inca Empire.

Islam is a religion based on the teachings of the Qur'an, a sacred book. People
who follow Islam are called Muslims. Muslims believe that there is only one god,
whom they call Allah, which in English means "God".
Muslims also believe that Muhammad (or Mohammed) was the last of many
prophets from Allah. They believe that the Qur'an is the exact word of Allah, as
revealed to Muhammad. Muslims also call Muhammad a "messenger of Allah".
After Muhammad died, Muslims wrote down stories about what he had said and
done. Muslims call these stories Hadith. Muslim scholars collected all of these
Hadith in books and compared them to each other. They decided which Hadith
were most likely to be true records of the Sunnah, that is, the words and actions
of Muhammad. Muslims see the Sunnah as an important source of guidance,
along with the Qur'an. Islam has laws based on the Qur'an and the Sunnah. These
laws are called "Sharia". Muslim lawyers have studied Sharia and written down
their ideas about how to judge different cases. These ideas about Sharia are
called Fiqh.
Mark the right alternative:

MCFEEGLEEBEE'S POND
By Carol Moore
Out behind the big red barn at the edge of the walnut grove is a most magnificent
pond shaded by an old oak tree. I'll tell you right now, before it's too late. It
belongs to McFeeglebee. And McFeeglebee absolutely forbids fishing in that pond.
He's put up five signs to prove it. "Before I'll allow any little boys to fish in there,"
he says, "I'd rather remove it."
"Little boys make too much noise. They'd scare the fish, being shouters and
laughers and slappers. They'd muddy the water, and leave gum wrappers. No --
I'd be a fool to let them fish in my pool."
So for a long time nobody dared to fish in that pool. That is, not until little
Georgie P. Johnson decided to break the rule. "I'm gonna fish there," he said,
"under the oak, where it's cool."
"I'm gonna lie down with my knees in the air and the pole through my toes and
doze like a lazy catfish in summer. Nobody will catch me. I'm a fast runner.
Everyone warned him. "A pool is not the sea. You can't fish for free, it's stealing.
Besides, there are all sorts of surprises in McFeeglebee's pond. Nobody knows just
what is in there besides fish and old shoes and the things people lose. You'll catch
something dangerous so you'd better beware. Fish in that pond? I wouldn't dare!"

A Study in Scarlet (By Arthur Conan Doyle)
Chapter 1 - Mr. Sherlock Holmes
In the year 1878 I took my degree of Doctor of Medicine of the University of
London, and proceeded to Netley to go through the course prescribed for
surgeons in the army. Having completed my studies there, I was duly attached to
the Fifth Northumberland Fusiliers as Assistant Surgeon. The regiment was
stationed in India at the time, and before I could join it, the second Afghan war
had broken out. On landing at Bombay, I learned that my corps had advanced
through the passes, and was already deep in the enemy's country. I followed,
however, with many other officers who were in the same situation as myself, and
succeeded in reaching Candahar in safety, where I found my regiment, and at
once entered upon my new duties.

The campaign brought honours and promotion to many, but for me it had nothing
but misfortune and disaster. I was removed from my brigade and attached to the
Berkshires, with whom I served at the fatal battle of Maiwand. There I was struck
on the shoulder by a Jezail bullet, which shattered the bone and grazed the
subclavian artery. I should have fallen into the hands of the murderous Ghazis
had it not been for the devotion and courage shown by Murray, my orderly, who
threw me across a pack-horse, and succeeded in bringing me safely to the British
lines.
Worn with pain, and weak from the prolonged hardships which I had undergone, I
was removed, with a great train of wounded sufferers, to the base hospital at
Peshawar. Here I rallied, and had already improved so far as to be able to walk
about the wards, and even to bask a little upon the verandah, when I was struck
down by enteric fever, that curse of our Indian possessions. For months my life
was despaired of, and when at last I came to myself and became convalescent, I
was so weak and emaciated that a medical board determined that not a day
