O ASTP (Army Specialized Training Program) combinava técnicas do Método Direto e de um já desenvolvido a partir do estudo de línguas indígenas, além da preparação de livros e gravações específicos. As aulas duravam de oito a doze horas, em um período de oito a dez semanas, no qual os soldados eram submetidos a intenso treinamento. A média de alunos por sala de aula não passava de doze e enfatizava-se, principalmente, a conversação em detrimento da prática da leitura e da escrita. Além disso, havia professores nativos à disposição dos aprendizes e uma ampla gama de materiais, tais como filmes e transmissões radiofônicas. Só eram admitidos no curso alunos com conhecimento prévio de línguas estrangeiras e alto nível intelectual (SANT'ANNA, [20-]; VILAS BOAS et al, [20-]).
