Preparation
Duplicate the pages and cut the schedules apart. 
Make enough for each student to have one schedule.
Procedure
1. Tell students they are going to role-play making and 
responding to invitations.
2. Give each student a schedule. Tell students they should 
invite their classmates to do the activities in bold. If the 
person being invited already has an activity on his or her 
schedule for that day and time, he or she should politely 
refuse and offer an excuse. If the person is free, he or she 
should accept, and both students should write the activity 
and the other student’s name in the schedule.
3. Model the activity. Play the role of Student A. Invite 
one of the Students B to see a movie with you on Friday 
at 7:00 p.m. Elicit the response: I’m really sorry, but I 
can’t. I have an English class at that time. Then make 
the same invitation to one of the Students C and elicit an 
appropriate response, for example: Sure, I’d love to.
4. Have students get up and walk around the room, making 
and responding to invitations. Students should try to 
complete their schedule with the names of the people who 
accepted their invitations. 
5. End the activity promptly after 20 minutes even if some 
students haven’t completed their schedules. Ask a few 
students to report some of their information to the class.
