The Tourist Guide
	It is easy to imagine how important the English language is for a person who operates in the tourist sector – a profession or job that may require a university degree in Brazil. A simple example: how would it be possible for a travel agent to make a reservation at a hotel abroad either by phone or by e-mail, or even communicate with firms in other countries to agree on transportation or transfer of passengers, without using English idiom? People who work as tour guides, showing our country’s attractions to foreign tourists, also have to master this idiom. It is common that on outings to the pantanal (matogrossense) or to Rio, for example, the guide introduces him or herself to the group of tourists as someone who can speak Portuguese, English or Spanish. These languages are fundamental there, because of the large number of foreign visitors.
	However, it is not only in contacts abroad or with tourists that the English language is an essential communication tool for this professional. The person in this sector also depends on English to plan, organize and promote events such as parties, fairs, exhibitions and conferences.
