Bom trabalho! Thu Jul 1, 2004 12:03 AM ET SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australian scientists have identified the immune response that determines why some mice are infected with mousepox and others are not, a discovery that could lead to better protection for humans in a bio-terror attack. Mice that are resistant to mousepox, a close relative of the smallpox virus, produce three regulatory proteins called cytokines that are absent in mice that become infected. The findings raise the possibility of identifying humans vulnerable to smallpox and targeting vaccination and treatment in the event of an outbreak, said Australian National University immunologist Gunasegaran Karupiah, who headed the discovery team. “This is an important step toward better protection from the threat of smallpox for health workers and the general community,” Karupiah told Reuters on Thursday. Scientists know relatively little about the immune response to smallpox because the virus was eradicated decades ago after a successful worldwide vaccination program. Smallpox was highly contagious and killed around 30 percent of those infected. After the September 11, 2001 airliner attacks on New York and Wa- shington there have been fears that terror groups may develop smallpox as a biological weapon. “Smallpox was one of the biggest human scourges...yet because it was successfully eradicated no one was interested in understanding how individuals recovered, but now the interest is back because of the threat of bio-terrorism,” said Karupiah. Smallpox produces flu-like symptoms and a distinctive and disfiguring rash. It has an incubation period of around 12 days. Symptoms include tiredness, chills, fatigue and fever followed by pustules that erupt mainly on the face and limbs. Source: www.reuters.com Artigo 2 Título: NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Many healthy people who smoke or drink may have a genetic alteration in the cells of the mouth and throat that could signal an increased risk of developing cancer, according to researchers at the University of Hong Kong. The genetic alteration affects the p15 gene, which is involved in the process that normally kills off cells when they go haywire. In many cancers, the p15 gene is methylated, meaning that it is turned off and is unable to perform its “tumor suppressor” function. The researchers’ study of healthy adults and patients with head and neck cancers found that 68 percent of healthy smokers and drinkers showed methylated p15 in some of their oral cells. The same was true of 48 percent of the cancer patients, but only 8 percent of healthy adults who were non- smokers and drank only occasionally or not at all. The investigators say it is unclear whether the healthy men and women who showed signs of p15 methylation are in fact at increased risk of developing head and neck cancer, a group of diseases that includes cancers of the mouth, nasal cavity and throat. However, the findings do support the idea that “these p15 methylation changes are present in the very early stages of head and neck cancer development,” study co-author Dr. Anthony Po-Wing Yuen told Reuters Health. He and his colleagues report on the study in the July 1st issue of the journal Cancer. Source: www.reuters.com That smokers and drinkers face a risk of head and neck cancers is nothing new. Tobacco use is behind the majority of these cancers, and people who smoke and drink are at greater risk than those who do one or the other. Identifying the “early genetic aberrations” that spur the cancer process may help doctors predict which smokers and drinkers are at particular risk of head and neck cancers, according to Yuen. What’s more, he said, if scientists know which early genetic changes are at the root of cancer, they may be able to develop drugs that reverse these alterations. SOURCE: Cancer, July 1, 2004. 2. ( ) Economic measures. b. ( ) A recent revolution. c. ( ) A new business. d. ( ) A bank account. e. ( ) Car and information technology. SYDNEY (Reuters) - You don’t need millions to be happy. At The Happiness Institute in Australia, a couple of hundred dollars may do the trick. Since the institute opened its doors this year, men and women of all ages have been paying A$200 an hour (US$140) for lessons in how to feel great. Businesses are spending as much as A$6,000 on half-day happiness workshops for their staff. “You can actually increase your happiness levels. That’s what we teach,” said Timothy Sharp, founder of institute, which also offers group sessions from A$30 a head. “We take people from zero and try to put a positive in their happiness bank account. You don’t have to settle just for OKness. It’s no more OK than having a zero bank balance. You can have a lot more,” Sharp told Reuters. Experts say only about 15 percent of happiness comes from income, assets and other financial factors. As much as 90 percent comes from elements such as attitude, life control and relationships. “If you’re not a natural in any of these areas you can learn to get a lot better at them,” Sharp said. The Happiness Institute is part of what U.S. economist Paul Zane Pilzer calls the “Wellness Revolution.” In his book of the same name, Pilzer says the next trillion-dollar industry after cars and information technology will be in preventive businesses that help people find peace, health and happiness. BASIC NEEDS While most of us are significantly better off financially than our parents and grandparents, happiness levels haven’t changed to reflect that. Studies show that once the basic needs of shelter and food are met, additional wealth adds very little to happiness. “It’s definitely not a guarantee. The difference between someone on say $30,000 a year and someone on $300,000 a year is actually very small. A lot of people are surprised by that,” Sharp said. “The economists are saying, ‘Well, why haven’t there been changes? Because on economic measures there have been huge changes’.” Craig Barber, ge- neral manager of a hotel in Sydney, had five one-on-one sessions at The Happiness Institute and organized a series of four-hour group sessions with Sharp for his staff. “You could hear a pin drop. At each break I walked around the tables and there wasn’t a doodle in sight. They were so into it, paying so much attention,” Barber said. Source: www.reuters.com, July 1, 2004 2. Unidade 2 Estruturas de palavras Organizadoras Anna Maria Carmagnani Walkyria Monte Mór Elaboradores Carlos Renato Lopes Luiz Otávio Costa Marques Abduction An event in which human beings are taken from their normal surroundings against their will, and are forced to interact in various ways with non-human entities. They usually observe them inside as well as out! Most people awake not knowing they have been abducted, they have marks on their body that are unexplainable or remember having a realistic dream of flying through the air. When someone is abducted, usually they come back alive and well, but sometimes they disappear without a trace, they have been killed by being amputated on. You may have been abducted, there’s no way of knowing! For 40 years or so, this has been the most common type of alien contact. In more recent years, the most commontype of entity reported has been the grey. Although abductions can occur at anyplace at any time, the standard scenario involves the victim being alone, whether in bed or in an isolated location, such as a lonely stretch of road in a rural area. Usually when a person is abducted, they may see a sighting of light in the sky or in the case of bedroom encounters, the presence of a blue light in the room. At this point the victim frequently experiences a sudden dislocation in them, and realizes he or she has instantaneously traveled several miles and finds herself or himself on a desert road, or awakens the following morning in bed. In each case there is no memory of what had happened. Susan Blackmore A Roper Poll claimed that nearly four million Americans have had certain “indicator” experiences and therefore had probably been abducted by aliens. But a study of 126 school children and 224 undergraduates shows knowledge of aliens is related more to watching television than to having the relevant experiences. How can we explain these experiences? Some abductees recall their experiences spontaneously, but some only “remember” in therapy, support groups, or under hypnosis. We know that memories can be changed and even completely created with hypnosis (Laurence, et al. 1986), peer pressure, and repeated questioning (Loftus 1993). Are “memories” of abduction created this way? Most of Wright’s ninety-five abductees were hypnotized and/or interviewed many times. Hopkins is well known for his hypnotic techniques for eliciting abduction reports, and Mack also uses hypnosis. However, there are many reports of conscious recall of abduction without hypnosis or multiple interviews, and the significance of the role of false memory is still not clear. Another theory is that abductees are mentally ill. This receives little or no support from the literature. Bloecher, Clamar, and Hopkins (1985) found above-average intelligence and no signs of serious pathology among nine abductees, and Parnell (1988) found no evidence of psychopathology among 225 individuals who reported having seen a UFO (although not having been abducted). Most recently, Spanos et al. (1993) compared forty-nine UFO reporters with two control groups and found they were no less intelligent, no more fantasy prone, and no more hypnotizable than the controls. Nor did they show more signs of psychopathology. They did, however, believe more strongly in alien visitations, suggesting that such beliefs allow people to shape ambiguous information, diffuse physical sensations, and vivid imaginings into realistic alien encounters. Temporal lobe lability has also been implicated. People with relatively labile temporal lobes are more prone to fantasy, and more likely to report mystical and out-of-body experiences, visions, and psychic experiences (Persinger and Makarec 1987). However, Spanos et al. found no difference in a temporal lobe lability scale between their UFO reporters and control groups. Cox (1995) compared a group of twelve British abductees with both a matched control group and a student control group and, again, found no differences on the temporal lobe lability scale. Like Spanos’s subjects, the abductees were more often believers in alien visitations than were the controls. A final theory is that abductions are elaborations of sleep paralysis, in which a person is apparently able to hear and see and feels perfectly awake, but cannot move. The International Classification of Sleep Disorders (Thorpy 1990) reports that sleep paralysis is common among narcoleptics**, in whom the paralysis usually occurs at sleep onset; is frequent in about 3 to 6 percent of the rest of the population; and occurs occasionally as “isolated sleep paralysis” in 40 to 50 percent. Other estimates for the incidence of isolated sleep paralysis include those from Japan (40 percent; Fukuda, et al. 1987), Nigeria (44 percent; Ohaeri 1992), Hong Kong (37 percent; Wing, Lee, and Chen 1994), Canada (21 percent; Spanos et al. 1995), Newfoundland (62 percent; Ness 1978), and England (46 percent; Rose and Blackmore 1996). Study: More young adults ‘disconnected’ Many neither working nor in school, study says Thursday, June 3, 2004 WASHINGTON (AP) – Despite marked improvement in the lives of American children, a new study finds rising numbers of “disconnected” young adults – those who have no job, are not in school and have not progressed beyond a high school diploma. The Annie E. Casey Foundation study, offering an annual measure of how children are faring, showed that nearly one in six young adults – 3.8 million Americans from 18 to 24 – was not in school or the workplace in 2002. Still, American children were much better off early this decade than in the mid-1990s, according to a host of indicators: Fewer babies died in infancy, kids were less likely to live in poverty and fewer were dropping out of school. The report, released Thursday, shows improvements in the lives of children early this decade compared with the mid-1990s. Between 1996 and 2001, improvements were reported in eight of the 10 indicators that the report uses to measure success. Among those measures: children in poverty, children living with a parent who lacks a secure year- round job and children dropping out of high school. Disturbing trend But child advocates flagged what they called a disturbing trend – 15 percent of 18- to 24-year olds are “disconnected,” meaning not in school or the workplace. The number of those young adults grew by 700,000, a 19 percent increase over three years. “Over 3.8 million disconnected youth face a greater likelihood of bad outcomes, now and in the future, which hold severe implications for our society,” said Douglas W. Nelson, president of the foundation, a private research and grant-making concern that focuses on children. On the upside, 21 states and Washington, D.C., improved on at least 7 out of 10 indicators of child well-being. Thirty-five states and Washington improved on at least 6 out of 10 indicators. The study linked some of the good news to economic growth and expansion of public programs during the period covered. The data covers years before the economy grew sluggish. Not all indicators improved. For example, the percentage of low-birth babies increased slightly, as did the percentage of families headed by a single parent. Source: www.cnn.com 1. The documentary links President George W Bush with powerful families in Saudi Arabia, including that of Osama Bin Laden, and attacks his actions before and after 11 September. It took almost $22 million in its first three days according to studio estimates. Mr Moore’s film won the prestigious Palme d’Or prize at the Cannes Film Festival in May and has already broken single-day box records during a limited release in New York. Source: www.bbc.co.uk 2. Although perhaps not 100% factually accurate, Mr Moore’s documentary is a must see for every American as well as the international viewer. The bottom line* is not whether Mr Moore is right or wrong, but the fact it will kick start the needed debate on change in American leadership. Axel, Washington DC B. Regardless of political perspective, this is an entertaining movie. It should not, however, be viewed as an accurate documentary but rather as pure propaganda. Most Americans have already made up their mind about Michael Moore and I don’t see this as impacting the election. If you hate Bush you’ll think it’s all true. If not, you’ll think it’s just more hot air from a discredited demagogue. Worth the price of admission and a bucket of popcorn if you ask me. Duncan, New Jersey, USA C. I am looking forward to seeing this movie. I realize that Michael Moore takes facts and bends them to portray his point of view. But it is after all, his film. While I did not agree with everything in the films Roger and Me and Bowling for Columbine, I did find many of the facts portrayed to ring true. The Bush Administration has been trying to eliminate all negative press concerning his party and himself since taking office. Mr Moore should be able to express himself in any way he likes. That’s the wonderful thing about living in democratic countries that allow free speech. Isn’t it why Mr Bush and his administration claim to have chosen to invade Iraq in the first place? MINI-TEST Read part of an article published in The Los Angeles Times and answer the questions. MEDICINE Leaner teens compensate for fast-food meals They eat less later in the day, researchers say, while their heavier counterparts maintain their usual daily intake after a high-calorie lunch. By Kelly Young Times Staff Writer June 28, 2004 The appetites of teenagers can seem to know no bounds, especially when it comes to fast food. Although some adolescents can indulge with few ill consequences, others start packing on the pounds. New research suggests an explanation. Not only do slender teens eat less than their heavier counterparts, they also compensate for their fast-food binges by eating less later in the day. Overweight teens maintain their usual food intake even after a 1,500-calorie fast-food lunch, according to a study published in the June 16 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Assn. ”Certainly, the findings provide a basis for how fast food could promote excessive weight gain,” said the study’s lead author, Cara Ebbeling, an obesity researcher at Children’s Hospital Boston. She and colleagues gave 54 teens who regularly ate fast food an extra- large lunch in a food court. They told the teens to eat as much or as little as they wanted in an hour. Some ate a nine-piece chicken nuggets meal and then got more. On average, the 13- to 17-year-olds consumed 61.6% of their daily required calories in one sitting; those who were overweight ate 400 calories more than their slender counterparts. ”Fast food promotes higher energy intake, and among people susceptible to being overweight, it’s going to be even more dramatic,” said Simone French, an epidemiology professor at the University of Minnesota. Air pollution blamed for 750 deaths in heatwave By Severin Carrell 22 August 2004 More than 750 people were killed by air pollution in last year’s record temperatures, a government-funded study has revealed. The sudden surge in deaths occurred last August as most Britons were basking in the .highest summer temperatures since records began. The study suggests there will be further increases in the numbers of pollution-related deaths as global warming takes effect. The findings, which will be presented at an international air-quality conference in London on Tuesday, are likely to lead to even stronger warnings about the risks of ill-health during heatwaves. Dr John Stedman, the study’s author, said his findings suggested more stringent measures were needed, such as banning cars from city centres in heatwaves and keeping people indoors. Tim Brown, from the National Society for Clean Air, said about 2,000 people were thought to have died directly because of last August’s heatwave and that up to 40 per cent of those were killed by air pollution. “We need to be much more aware of air pollution levels when there’s a heatwave going on. When air pollution episodes like this happen, the Government needs to redouble its warnings,” he said. Source: www.independent.co.uk 1. The article is mainly about a. September 10, 1993. A normal Friday evening by all accounts, except for one unexplainable event that was to change the face of television. That night, The X- Files premiered on Fox, a network that apparently came out of nowhere to challenge TV’s Big Three with a programming lineup that was racier (Married with Children), more culturally relevant (In Living Color), and generally wittier (The Simpsons) than most of the Neilsen winners in the 1980s. At that moment, neither The X-Files’ producers nor television critics expected the series to do more than draw some stragglers from Star Trek or Twin Peaks fans. However, after seven seasons, one big budget movie, and enough franchise merchandise sold to fill every secret military base in North America, it is clear that the Emmy Award-winning series has altered the science fiction genre, the standards of prime time television, and the way its vast audience views the American government and the possibility of the paranormal. Almost unbelievably, this phenomenon can be attributed in large part to Chris Carter, the man responsible for the uncanny mythology, that has inspired X-Philes everywhere. After working for years as a freelance journalist, Carter began his screenwriting career writing and producing shows for The Disney Channel, such as 1989’s Brand New Life. In 1992 he began developing projects for Twentieth Century Fox Television; The X-Files was first of many (Millennium in 1996 and Harsh Realm in 1999). The X-Files’ spinoff series, The Lone Gunmen is due to premiere this winter. Carter’s inspiration for The X-Files came mainly from his childhood viewing during the early ’70s, primarily Kolchak: The Night Stalker, a show about a Chica- go reporter who repeatedly encountered strange creatures and circumstances, and The Avengers. The X-Files chronicles the investigations of FBI Agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), assigned to cases that the Bureau has deemed unsolvable. Carter crafted Mulder as an intelligent, intuitive agent on a crusade to uncover the truth behind the paranormal and secret government agendas, fueled by his memory of his sister’s apparent abduction by aliens when they were both children. In an effort to debunk his efforts, Mulder’s superiors recruit Scully, a brilliant medical doctor and struggling Catholic, to be his partner and eventually discredit his work. Easier said than done. Scully and Mulder develop a mutual respect and affection, a friendship based on their complimentary perspectives, both dedicated to finding a truth in which they can believe. As Mulder seeks to confirm a universe of infinite possibilities, Scully attempts to reaffirm her faith in God — the granddaddy of supernatural phenomena.
