 1a Questão (Ref.: 201202146271) Pontos: 0,0 / 1,5
Considering the following examples, explain the difference between an unaccusative and an ergative verb. He
ran towards the tree yesterday. He resigned the Presidency. Joan fell on the street yesterday. Jimmy died last
month.

Resposta: Run - Ran Resign - Resigned Fall - Fell Die - Died Todos os verbos estão no passado. E a diferença
entre os " unaccusative and ergative verbs " é que um precisa de acompanhamento (verbo transitivo, ex: He
resigned... Resigned oquê? The presidency...) e o outro não precisa de acompanhamento necessariamente
(Verbo intransitivo, ex: Jimmy died. Essa infomação basta. Está claro que o sujeito morreu.);

Gabarito: Answer: an unaccusative verb is an intransitive verb whose subject is not a (semantic) agent; that is,
it does not actively initiate, or is not actively responsible for, the action of the verb. An unergative verb is an
intransitive verb distinguished semantically by having an agent subject.

Explain the difference in meaning of the following sentences: a) If John has the money, he will buy a Ferrari. b)
If John had the money, he would buy a Ferrari. c) If John had had the money, he would have bought a Ferrari.

Resposta: A diferença, é de como a frase está escrita apenas. Pois o contexto é o mesmo. Veja a baixo:
Primeira frase: Se John tivesse dinheiro, ele comprava uma Ferrari. Segunda frase: Se John tivesse o dinheiro,
ele de compraria uma Ferrari. Terceira frase: Se John tivesse o dinheiro, ele tinha comprado uma Ferrari.

Gabarito: a) If John has the money, he will buy a Ferrari. (I know John very well and I know that he earns a lot
of money and that he loves Ferraris. So I think it is very likely that sooner or later he will have the money to
buy a Ferrari.) b) If John had the money, he would buy a Ferrari. (I know John very well and I know that he
doesn't have much money, but he loves Ferraris. He would like to own a Ferrari (in his dreams). But I think it is
very unlikely that he will have the money to buy one in the near future.) c) If John had had the money, he
would have bought a Ferrari. (I knew John very well and I know that he never had much money, but he loved
Ferraris. He would have loved to own a Ferrari, but he never had the money to buy one.)
