The boys are playing with the ball. Os meninos estão brincando com a bola. The children are talking to the teacher. Children like toys. As crianças gostam de brinquedos. Brazilians love soccer. Os brasileiros adoram futebol. Music is an art. A música é uma arte. Gold is a precious metal. The cat is a domestic animal. O gato é um animal doméstico. The computer is a wonder of technology. O computador é uma maravilha da tecnologia. Today, the car is a status symbol. Mas: Cats are domestic animals. Os gatos são animais domésticos. Computers are wonders of technology. Os computadores são maravilhas da tecnologia. Today, cars are status symbols. Observe: The children that are studying... As crianças que estão estudando... The Brazilians who went to the USA... Os brasileiros que foram para os EUA… The music written by Mozart… A música escrita por Mozart… The gold that was stolen... Your grandmother is very old. A sua avó é muito idosa. We are selling our house. Estamos vendendo a nossa casa. The Simpsons went to the restaurant. Os Simpsons foram ao restaurante. aideea www.aideea.com.br 2 The Kennedys were a famous family. Os Kennedys foram uma família famosa. The Camargos are my neighbors. The President came to our city. O presidente veio a nossa cidade. The Queen of England lives in London. A rainha da Inglaterra mora em Londres. The doctor is visiting his patients. O médico está visitando os pacientes dele. The captain spoke to the soldiers. O capitão falou aos soldados. Mas: President Kennedy was assassinated. O presidente Kennedy foi assassinado. Queen Elisabeth II was crowned in 1953. A rainha Elizabeth foi coroada em 1953. Doctor Brown is visiting his patients. Captain Smith spoke to soldiers. Tennis is very popular in Australia. O tênis é muito popular na Austrália. Biology is an important science. A biologia é uma ciência importante. Red is Jane’s favorite color. O vermelho é a cor favorita da Jane. I’m going to bank after lunch. Vou ao banco depois do almoço. Humility is a rare virtue. A humildade é uma virtude rara. Mas: The blue of her eyes... O azul dos olhos dela… The lunch she offered us… O almoço que ela nos ofereceu... The winter I spent in London… O inverno que passei em Londres... The humility of St. Francis… Rio is a beautiful city. O Rio é uma cidade linda. France is famous for its wines. A França é famosa por seus vinhos. Asia is bigger than Europe. A Ásia é maior que a Europa. Hawaii is in Oceania. O Havaí fica na Oceania. Exceções: The United States Os Estados Unidos The United Kingdom O Reino Unido The (former) Soviet Union A (antiga) União Soviética aideea www.aideea.com.br 3 The United Arab Emirates Os Emirados Árabes Unidos The Dominican Republic A República Dominicana The Ivory Coast A Costa do Marfim The Solomon Islands As Ilhas Salomão The Philippines As Filipinas The Bahamas As Bahamas The Azores Os Açores The Kongo O Kongo The Netherlands Os Países Baixos – A Holanda The Hague Haia – Sede do governo holandês Ainda existem outros, porém de menor importância. Convém citar alguns nomes compostos com quais não se usa o artigo: Saudi Arabia Arábia Saudita South Africa África do Sul North Korea Coréia do Norte South Korea Coréia do Sul Acidentes geográficos (montanhas, rios, mares, oceanos etc.) levam o artigo em inglês, da mesma forma que em português: The Andes Os Andes The Alps Os Alpes The Rockies/The Rocky Mountains As Montanhas Rochosas The Atlantic O Atlântico The Mediterranean O Mediterrâneo The Amazon O Amazonas The Gulf of Mexico O golfo do México The Kalmar Sound O estreito de Kalmar Lagos, porém, são exceção: Lake Victoria O Lago Vitória Lake Huron O Lago Huron Lake Titicaca O Lago Titicaca Mas: Next day we started our trek with daypacks towards the lake. I got to know that the lake I visited has two names: Dwarian lake and Ratti or Rattigali lake. My brother goes to school/college/university in the morning. What the hell is going on? Que diabo está acontecendo? Ao contrário do que ocorre em português, é obrigatório o emprego de artigo definido antes de instrumentos musicais precedidos de verbos como to like (gostar), to learn (aprender) e, principalmente, to play (tocar). Paula plays the piano well. Paula toca piano bem. Henry is learning the guitar. Henry está aprendendo violão. Robert likes the saxophone. Robert gosta de saxofone. Gosto de dançar lambada. William dances the tango like a professional. O William dança tango como um profissional. Quando o artigo definido é empregado antes de adjetivos substantivados, significa que estes estão no plural. aideea www.aideea.com.br 5 The blind Os cegos The powerful Os poderosos The rich and the poor Os ricos e os pobres The deaf Os surdos Como proceder, então, para o singular?
