MEASUREMENT OF THE CONCENTRATIONS OF BK, IL-6, AND TOTAL PROTEIN
The concentrations of BK were determined using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit (_4.9 pg/mL; Dai-Nippon, Osaka, Japan). The concentrations of IL-6 were also determined using an ELISA kit (_0.04 pg/mL; Quantikine; R&D Systems, Minneapolis, MN). The concentrations of total protein were measured by a dye-binding assay using a protein assay kit (_10 _g/mL; Bio-Rad, Hercules, CA).

Measurement of pain-related mediators and total protein concentrations
One surgeon (MN) determined the concentrations of the pain-related mediators with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit (Assay Designs, Ann Arbor, Mich, for SP, LTB4, and PGE2; ICN Pharmaceuticals, Costa Mesa, Calif, for serotonin; and Dainippon, Osaka, Japan, for bradykinin) according to manufacturer instructions. Protein was assayed with a Bio RAD protein assay kit (Bio-RAD, Hercules, Calif).

MEASUREMENT OF CONCENTRATIONS OF PAIN-RELATED CHEMICAL MEDIATORS
The concentrations of BK, LTB4, PGE2, and SP were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits, obtained from Dai-Nippon Pharmaceutical Corp (Osaka, Japan) for BK (sensitivity, _4.9 pg/mL) and from Assay Designs (Ann Arbor, MI) for LTB4 (sensitivity, _48 pg/mL), PGE2 (sensitivity, _36 pg/mL), and SP (sensitivity, _8 pg/mL).

Measurement of TNF-ct concentrations in synovial fluid
Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using a TNF-a ELISA kit (Genzyme Corporation, Cambridge, MA, USA) was used for measuring TNF-c~ concentrations in SF samples.

Determination of the concentrations of total protein and cytokines
The total protein concentration was determined by using a Bio-RAD protein assay kit (Bio-RAD, Hercules, Calif). The concentrations of the proinflammatory cytokines were determined by using an enzymelinked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit (Quantikine; R & D Systems Inc, Minneapolis, Minn), according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The cytokines and their detection levels in this study were as follow: IL-1_ (_0.0625 pg/mL), IL-6 (_0.009 pg/mL), IL-8 (_0.975 pg/mL), and tumor necrosis factor–_(TNF–_) (_0.008 pg/mL).
