English Around the World
Have you ever had the desire to wander the world and see what was out there? While some people prefer to stay in the comfort of their own home, others have been bitten by the travel bug and can’t wait to explore the world. Exotic places call to them. “Come visit me and I will show you my mysteries,” they say.

Every year millions of people pack their suitcases or put on backpacks and flock to visit the seven continents of the world. They wander through the castles and museums of Europe, and the cities and natural wonders of North and South America. Some visit the vast exotic cultures of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The great outback of Australia is a wonderland for those who go there. And a few lucky people even make to the most mysterious continent on the earth- Antarctica.

Why do people want to explore the world? It gives them a better perspective about the earth and the people living on it. It opens their minds, it gives them a feeling of accomplishment, and it makes them feel alive. So, save some money, get your passport ready, and see the world. It will change your life forever.

THE LANGUAGE BARRIER
    Early last year, at a trade fair in Milan, a revolutionary telephone system was unveiled. Developed by American and Japanese, the new machine provides instantaneous translation of the caller's speech. Say "hello" in English and it will come out as "alô" in Portuguese or the equivalent word in the language of your choice. It's remarkable! It might make you think that the whole business of language learning could soon become redundant. But don't be hasty.

    A sophisticated computer was programmed to perform language translation. 4It was instructed to translate "out of sight, out of mind" into Russian. 5The Russian translation was 6then fed into the computer and translated back into English. The result was: "invisible lunatic". A typical error. Natural language is so complex and ambiguous that a computer will invariably have difficulty in making sense of it. The new phone can deal with "hello" and other words well enough. But if asked to translate a sentence, its limitations soon become apparent.

    The dream of "machine translation" (MT) is almost as old as the modern digital computer itself: the idea was promoted in 1949 and by the late 50's more than 20 MT projects were in development. By 1966 the Automatic Language Processing Advisory Committee concluded that "there's no immediate or predictable prospect of useful machine translation." Research funds were cut. In the late 70's MT was re-discovered.

    The new generation of programs is less ambitious. They are limited to texts where the possibilities of error are minimal, such as technical reports and operating manuals. Furthermore, the computers simply produce a workable draft translation, which a human "post-editor" will then correct.

    In spite of their obvious limitations, MTs are extremely fast and reasonably accurate. Yet, even the most optimistic scientists admit that it'll be at least 20 years before computers are capable of translating more sophisticated texts.

	– Confira abaixo um texto sobre ataques terroristas

JUST 10 YEARS INTO A NEW CENTURY, MORE THAN TWO-thirds of the country sees the past decade as a period of decline for the U.S., according to a new TIME/Aspen Ideas Festival poll that probed Americans on the decade since the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001.

Osama bin Laden is dead and al-Qaeda seriously weakened, but the impact of the 9/11 attacks and the decisions that followed have, in the view of most Americans, put the U.S. in a tailspin that the country has been unable to shake during two administrations and almost 10 years of trying.

ACCORDING TO THE POLL, ONLY 6% OF MORE THAN 2,000 Americans believe the country has completely recovered from the events of 9/11. Some of this pessimism can be tied to fears of more terrorist attacks. Despite the death of bin Laden, most Americans think another terrorist attack in the U.S. is likely.

Na sequência “most Americans think another terrorist attack in the U.S. is likely” é possível entender que, para a maioria dos norte-americanos, outro ataque terrorista nos EUA é:

I. uma incógnita;
II. provável;
III. iminente;
IV. impensável;

A wave of anger is sweeping the cities of the world.
The protests have many different origins. In Brazil people rose up against bus fares, in Turkey against a building project. Indonesians have rejected higher fuel prices. In the euro zone they march against austerity, and the Arab spring has become a perma-protest against pretty much everything.

Yet just as in 1848, 1968 and 1989, when people also found a collective voice, the demonstrators have much in common. In one country after another, protesters have risen up with bewildering speed. They tend to be ordinary, middle-class people, not lobbies with lists of demands. Their mix of revelry and rage condemns the corruption, inefficiency and arrogance of the folk in charge.

Nobody can know how 2013 will change the world – if at all. In 1989 the Soviet empire teetered andfell. But Marx’s belief that 1848 was the first wave of a proletarian revolution was confounded by decades of flourishing capitalism and 1968 did more to change sex than politics. Even now, though, the inchoate significance of 2013 is discernible. And for politicians who want to peddle the same old stuff, news is not good.

Brazil dismisses Rio 2016 Olympics water pollution worries
The organizers of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro have dismissed concerns about water pollution in the bay where sailing events will be held.

Brazilian officials said recent tests show that the waters in Guanabara Bay meet international standards. The first official test event - for the sailing competitions - went ahead on Sunday below the Sugar Loaf mountain. Athletes who have competed there recently say they bumped into floating debris, including sofas and a dead dog.

"The sailors and boats do not want to be in a field of play where there are any type of objects," said Alastair Fox, head of competitions at the International Sailing Federation (Isaf). "And here there are some - sofa, door, dog - and we know any of these objects could affect the performance of a sailor.

"We need to make sure the racecourse is fair for everyone and that it is free from debris, he told the BBC's Julia Carneiro in Rio. Brazilian media reported that the event could be moved to another sailing venue. But the Rio Olympics Organizing Committee said there was no plan B.

"The tests were positive and we can confirm that water is safe for the athletes," said Rio-2016 Sustainability Manager Julie Duffus. In its Olympic bid, Rio promised to clean Guanabara Bay by 80%. But in June Mayor Eduardo Paes admitted the target would not be met.

"I am sorry that we did not use the games to get Guanabara Bay completely clean," Mr. Paes said during a media conference. Greater Rio has a population of some 10 million people and millions of liters of untreated sewage are dumped in the bay every day. "We understand the athletes' concerns. We will focus on the areas of the five sailing courses to prevent any disruption to the races," has now said Rio Olympics Sports Director Rodrigo Garcia.

	– Leia o texto “What are the Rio favelas to outsiders?”
abaixo:

To many Brazilians, favelas are dirty, violent, frightening places. But to many foreigners, they are exciting, interesting, and romantic.

More and more outsiders are coming from overseas to live, work, or just visit favelas, observers say. In doing so they are highlighting the difference between Brazilians who regard favelas with fear, rejection, and even disgust, and foreigners who embrace them as vibrant 10 representations of modern Brazilian culture.

In Brazil, no one likes favelas, no one thinks they are cool”, says Marcelo Armstrong, the owner of a company that runs daily tours to two Rio favelas.
“Foreigners are more open. There’s a certain romantic appeal to favelas. Although no figures are available on the number of foreigners living in favelas, Mr. Armstrong says the number is definitely rising and cites his own statistics as evidence.

The number of tourist staking his tours has risen from around four per month in 1992, when he started the business, to around 800 per month in 2007. Of those, only a dozen or so are Brazilians, mostly the partners of foreign visitors.

I, too

I, too, sing America.

I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.

Tomorrow,
I’ll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody'll dare
Say to me,
“Eat in the kitchen,”
Then.

Besides,
They’ll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed.

I, too, am America.

The Cat, the Partridge and the Hare
A long time ago, there lived a Partridge under a big, green tree. One day, he decided to go to the fields and find some food. Seeing plenty of food in the fields, he stayed on for many days.
While the Partridge was away, a Hare started living in his house.
When the Partridge had enough to eat, he decided to return. But, he found a Hare living in his house. “This is my house. It belongs to me. Leave my home,” said the Partridge to the Hare. The Hare replied, “The house belongs to whoever is living in it.” Soon, both of them started fighting for the house.
There was a Cat in the neighborhood. They decided to ask the Cat to solve their problem. The Cat acted like he was helpful. He was actually a cheat.
The Partridge and the Hare explained their problem to the Cat. The Cat pretended to be hard of hearing
He said, “Sorry! I can’t hear you. Please come closer.”So, the Partridge and the Hare went closer to the Cat. The wicked Cat grabbed them and ate them up.

	– Leia o texto para responder:

How can consumers find out if a corporation is “greenwashing” environmentally unsavory practices?
In essence, greenwashing involves falsely conveying to consumers that a given product, service, company or institution factors environmental responsibility into its offerings and/or operations. CorpWatch, a non-profit organization dedicated to keeping tabs on the social responsibility (or lack thereof) of U.S.-based companies, characterizes greenwashing as “the phenomena of socially and environmentally destructive corporations, attempting to preserve and expand their markets or power by posing as friends of the environment.”

One of the groups leading the charge against greenwashing is Greenpeace. “Corporations are falling all over themselves,” reports the group, “to demonstrate that they are environmentally conscious. The average citizen is finding it more and more difficult to tell the difference between those companies genuinely dedicated to making a difference and those that are using a green curtain to conceal dark motives.”

Greenpeace launched its Stop Greenwash campaign in 2009 to call out bad actors and help consumers make better choices. The most common greenwashing strategy, the group says, is when a company touts an environmental program or product while its core business is inherently polluting or unsustainable.

Another involves what Greenpeace calls “ad bluster”: using targeted advertising or public relations to exaggerate a green achievement so as to divert attention from actual environmental problems – or spending more money bragging about green behavior than on actual deeds. In some cases, companies may boast about corporate green commitments while lobbying behind the scenes against environmental laws.

Greenpeace also urges vigilance about green claims that brag about something the law already requires: “For example, if an industry or company has been forced to change a product, clean up its pollution or protect an endangered species, then uses Public Relations campaigns to make such action look proactive or voluntary.”

For consumers, the best way to avoid getting “greenwashed” is to be educated about who is truly green and who is just trying to look that way to make more money. Look beyond advertising claims, read ingredient lists or ask employees about the real information on their company’s environmental commitment. Also, look for labels that show if a given offering has been inspected by a reliable third-party. For example, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Certified Organic label can only go on products that meet the federal government’s organic standard. Just because a label says “made with organic ingredients” or “all-natural” does not mean the product qualifies as Certified Organic, so be sure to look beyond the hype.
