English for all! English for all! (BRASIL, 2017, p. 241). English for all! • Talking about politics. page 06 introduction Who are these people? They are or were Presidents What language do they speak? Dilma speaks Portuguese, Obama speaks English, Chávez speaks Spanish, Trump speaks English and Kim speaks Korean. Is any of them omnipotent? This is a personal question, about students´ opinion. This exercise can also be applied in groups using cards. You can print the cards in the following link: Print a document to each group of 5 students. Each student keeps a photograph of a politician. The speeches need to be organized in the center of the group facing the table. One takes a card, reads it to him/herself without showing the card to the others. He/she has to decide if the speech in hands was said by whom the picture he/she owns. If he/she decided positive, he/she has to keep the card (the speech one), if negative, he/she has to give the card back to the pile of cards. And the game goes on. At the end of the game, the teacher shows the whole class the answers and the students check their cards. You can give a chocolate to the winners, it´s up to you. If you do not have students who would like to read the sentences, ask a group to read them (for example, an entire line of students, from 1 to 10 from the calling list etc.). Then ask them who these people are, they can read their names in the pictures. Bill Gates and Thomas Edison. Ask your students about the “if” statement: is it a hypothesis/condition or a real situation? It´s a hypothesis/condition Then, ask about the “main clause”: based on the “main clause” or the other statement, is there any real possibility to the hypothesis happen? No, there isn´t.
