	Read the following excerpt:
"During the millions of years that, due to the absence of written sources, we call 'pre-history', the consecutive 'ice ages' or glacial periods determined the character of Northern Europe. Historical geography and paleontology yet can help us understand what the world looked like in those years" (RIETBERGEN, 2006, p. 12).
Mark T for True and F for False, for each one of the following assumptions:
(    ) The pre-historic period lasted for millions of years.
(    ) Northern Europe character was determined by ice ages or glacial periods: this is a passive voice.
(    ) Consecutive ice ages determined the character of Northern Europe: passive and active voice.
(    ) Passive voice for "consecutive ice ages determined the character of Northern Europe" would be "The character of Northern Europe was determined by consecutive ice ages".
Check the right sequence:

	Read the following text:
A lot has been said and written about the new Coronavirus and its sudden worldwide outburst. However, are we aware of the real issues, and real consequences of this brand new disease? Scientists have been working on a new vaccine and other forms of avoiding spreading the disease, which has already cost too many lives in all countries, all over the world.
Mark T for true and F for false, for each one of the following assumptions:
(    ) The text shows a formal level of language.
(    ) "A lot has been said and written about" is a passive form.
(    ) The active form for the first sentence of the text would be: "The new Coronavirus has been the subject of a lot of conversations and written texts".
(    )"Scientists have been working" is a passive form for "much work has been done by scientists".
Check the right sequence:

The use of "not" in English varies slightly if compared to the Portuguese "não. One difference is its position in the sentence, after the verb in English, before the verb in Portuguese: I am not tired x Eu não estou cansado. Besides, in English the corresponding "no" also exists, and may bring some difficulty to the sentences. Among the sentences given below, only one gives a correct place for "not" and/or "no".
Check the right sentence:
	 a)
When the husband arrived home, his wife not there yet.
	 b)
The kids had no answer for what they had just done.
	 c)
All you have to do is push the button. Do no knock on the door, please.
	 d)
I bring not any money with me now, but will have some to pay you back tomorrow.

O discurso direto (direct speech) ocorre quando repetimos ou apresentamos uma mensagem exatamente com as palavras que foram ditas. Por exemplo: Alice said: "I don't want milk". Além disso, podemos relatar algo que está sendo falado no momento, como uma conversa por telefone ou citar uma conversa prévia para alguma pessoa em um momento futuro. Veja outros exemplos:
a) She says, "What time will you be home?".
b) She said, "What time will you be home?" and I said, "I don't know!".
Com base no exposto, classifique V para as sentenças verdadeiras e F para as falsas:
(    ) Podemos usar advérbios para descrever a maneira como alguém disse alguma coisa ("I will not accept it!" he said angrily).
(    ) O discurso direto (direct speech) é utilizado quando relatamos, com nossas próprias palavras, o que alguém disse.
(    ) Na oração "Morgan said to me that he doesn't want to work." temos um exemplo de direct speech.
(    ) Na oração "Susan said, "I don't want to work"." temos um exemplo de direct speech.
Assinale a alternativa que apresenta a sequência CORRETA:
	 a)
	V - F - V - F.
	 b)
	F - V - F - F.
	 c)
	V - F - F - V.
	 d)
	V - V - F - V.

Reported or indirect speech focuses more on the content of what someone said rather than their exact words. In indirect speech, the structure of the reported clause depends on whether the speaker is reporting a statement, a question or a command. It is usually used to talk about the past, so we normally change the tense of the words spoken. Sobre o uso do discurso indireto, analise as sentenças a seguir:
I- A oração "Do you speak English?" é um exemplo de indirect speech.
II- O indirect speech é utilizado quando relatamos o que alguém disse, usando as mesmas palavras que a pessoa utilizou.
III- A oração "There's a fly in my milk! - screamed Saly" é um exemplo de indirect speech.
IV- A oração "He said that he had studied there" é um exemplo de indirect speech.
Assinale a alternativa CORRETA:
	 a)
As sentenças II e III estão corretas.
	 b)
As sentenças III e IV estão corretas.
	 c)
Somente a sentença IV está correta.
	 d)
Somente a sentença I está correta.

Read the following text: "Mea culpa":
Johnny was born in a wealthy family who lived in a remote location, in the surroundings of the village. One day, when he came back home after school at five, he noticed that someone had left the gate of the property open and that a few things were missing, mainly his brand new bike. "Who, for God's sake, has left the gate open again?"
He yelled. How astonished he got when a sudden voice riposted from the inside: "Who, for God's sake, left this morning, and took the keys again with?"
The boy immediately checked his pockets. There they were the keys of the padlock.
About the text, it is possible to state that:
I- Objects were missing from a private property after the actions of a forgetful boy called Johnny who now complains about it.
BECAUSE
II- An answer given to the complaint of the boy shows his stated reputation as a forgetful boy.
Check the right answer:

	 a)

	Read the following excerpt:
"The sea level began to rise about 8000 B.C. Though by 5000 B.C. there were sea walls or dunes along what is now the North-Sea coast. Large areas of the western Netherlands were flooded regularly. Therefore, at the beginning of the Christian era, that part of the country was unfit for constant habitation, though people may have used the land when circumstances allowed them to" (RIETBERGEN, 2006, p. 12).
Mark T for true and F for false, for the following assumptions:
(    ) "Large areas were flooded regularly" corresponds to a passive voice sentence.
(    ) "Large areas were flooded regularly" corresponds to an active voice sentence.
(    ) Another way to say "there were sea walls or dunes along..." would be "sea wall or dunes existed along..."
(    ) "People may have used the land" is in the passive voice.

We normally use the passive voice in the kind of texts that are called "formal texts". Only transitive verbs may be subject to the passive voice. This is why some structures may present an odd outcome. Consider the sentences given below and analyze the relationship between them:
I- "I'm not fitted by my new pair of sandals" Is thus an impossible passive voice structure.
BECAUSE
II- Intransitive verbsare not able to form passive voice, for the reason that, as they do not have an object, they may not form the subject of the sentence.
Check the right answer:
	 a)
I is a true sentence, and II is a true sentence. I completes II.
	 b)
I is a false sentence, and II is a true sentence.
	 c)
I is a true sentence, and II is a true sentence. II completes I.
	 d)
I is a true sentence, and II is a false sentence.
