Introduction
Fortune telling became very popular during the nineteenth
century and it gave birth to several different decks of “Sibilla” cards.
In this book, I will refer to Gypsy Oracle Cards (in Italian, “Sibilla
della Zingara”) and Vera Sibilla Italiana cards as, Sibilla cards. They
are actually the same deck with different artwork.
The word Sibilla means “Sibyl”, a mythological priestess.
The Sibilla cards have always been causally referred to as the
“gossipy cards” because they are commonly used to answer
inquiries about relationships, and they tend to expose facts in a
blatant manner.
A Sibilla deck consists of 52 cards, all of which correspond with
the standard French deck of playing cards. This means that every
Sibilla card is associated with a playing card suit such as Clubs,
Diamonds, Hearts and Spades, and a playing card number from one
(the aces) to thirteen (the kings).
Each Sibilla card depicts a common daily life scene, or a possible
situation in someone’s life. Every card has a very descriptive name,
intrinsically connected with the card, which is usually written on it to
accompany the illustration.
You can also use this book with a standard 52-card deck of
playing cards. The cards numbered 11 are the Jacks, 12 the
Queens, and 13 are all the Kings.
Please note that all the cards’ associated health interpretations
contained in this book are merely examples. No person can legally
provide diagnosis or medical treatment of any kind by reading the
cards.
Interpreting the cards is an art and everyone tends to develop
their own reading style. I suggest keeping a journal or notebook to
record your own findings, personal keywords and experiences with
every card. This way, it will be much easier to recognize and develop
your reading style.
The purpose of all the examples offered in this book is merely to
inspire, so the new card reader can develop his or her own
approach.

Direction: The people on this card are all seemingly listening to
and facing the speaker, who is located on the right side of the card.
This denotes an openness toward progress.
The storyteller is facing toward the left of the card, clearly
indicating that she is recounting a past event.
Meaning: A gathering, verbal communication, an appointment,
an announcement, an invitation, an apology, a conversation usually
held in person, rapport.
In my experience: Laid back conversation, small-talk.
In a spread: If this card is followed by a court card (person card)
it might indicate that the subject talked about is the person reflected
in that character card.
Near negative cards, it could mean an argument.
People: A group of friends, coworkers, people who reside
together (family, roommates, etc.), a social butterfly, a speaker,
outgoing, extroverted.
Work/money: A meeting, presentation, teamwork, public
relations, social skills, positive verbal exchange, profits.
Places and things: Concert, conference room, speakers, radio,
phone.
Advice: Talk about it; improve your social skills; practice active
listening; talk about issues in order to solve them; be more social;
learn a new language.

Meaning: Security, stability, comfort, warmth, feeling at home,

In my experience: Staying at home/ being at home, situations
regarding my family I live with.
In a spread: This is a special card that can denote a type of
building, business or setting when paired with certain descriptive
cards.
For example: Casa + Ammalato: A hospital or clinic.
Casa + Superbia: A beauty salon, etc.
People: Traditionalist, conservative, homebody, family-oriented.
Work/money: Family business, real estate, working from home,
a safe job, stable income.
Places and things: Building, shop, home/house, domestic
environment, the main branch or headquarters, a website.
Advice: Build a sturdy foundation; be constructive; focus on
family; tend to your home, improve it; enjoy your time at home.
Affirmations:
-I am strong, secure and powerful.
-I am comfortable in every situation.

Keywords: The future looks good
Direction: The lady is looking to the right of the card, which
denotes that she is looking forward to something that will arrive
shortly −in the near future.
This is the Sibilla card that represents the future (as opposed to
P6~Sospiri/Sighs, which represents the past).
Meaning: Expecting something or someone that’s on the way,
arrival of pleasant news, receiving answers, an opportunity, seeing
distant relatives.
In my experience: Really looking forward to something.
In a spread: Depending on surrounding cards, it can indicate that
something new or unknown will be arriving soon. 
If this card is followed by a negative card it could indicate a
disappointment.
People: Party planner, visionary, ambitious, optimistic. 
Work/money: New projects or policies are on the horizon, finally
receiving an awaited payment, great ambitions.
Places and things: Terrace, balcony, observatory, highland, tv,
theater, movies, planner/appointment diary.
Timing: The future. Soon, within a month.
Advice: Plan; be prepared; get organized; use a planner; make a
countdown calendar.
Affirmations:

Direction: Cupid is facing toward the left of the card, indicating
the inevitability of his actions −the unavoidability of our own human
emotions. This idea is conveyed by showing cupid’s image facing
toward the left of the card, the past. No one can escape their past,
just as no one can escape their own feelings.
Meanings: Good outcomes no matter what the question,
happiness, love, sense of belonging, peace, romanticism.
In my experience: Active enjoyment from doing what one loves,
great enthusiasm.
In a spread: This card provides a strongpositive mood to a
reading, especially if the question is related to relationships. It also
softens the bad attributes of surrounding negative cards.
People: Matchmaker, cheerful, innocent, honest, hyperactive,
adorable, a Pollyanna.
Work/ money: New collaborations, opportunities, money is not a
problem.
Places and things: Objects that are red, with a heart shape, etc.
Advice: Love! Focus on love; spread joy; look around you for
things to love; be happy, no matter what; love yourself; show and
express love to others.

improve, good news, satisfaction, creativity.
In my experience: Hobbies, taking a break, enjoying time off.
In a spread: This is a positive card that helps lift up the mood of
any previous negative cards.
People: Physical education teacher, summer camp instructor,
carefree, relaxed, easygoing, friendly.
Work/money: New projects, promotions, recognition, receiving
an inheritance, great satisfaction in financial matters.
Places and things: An amusement park, comedy club,
homemade crafts, board games, playing cards, toys.
Timing: Shortly.
Advice: Relax, take a break; tend to your favorite hobby; have

Direction: There are no people depicted on this card.
Meanings: Security, money, advantage, rewards from our efforts,
memories coming up, nostalgia.
In my experience: Receiving a little “extra” money in the form of
limited-time promotions, free-gifts with purchase, deluxe samples,
etc.
Also refunds.
In a spread: When close to positive influential cards it means
affluence. However, when it shows up near cards regarding love and
relationships, it could mean that the person in question is interested
in someone’s money −not love.
People: Cashier, banker, accountant, tax auditor, investor, cold,
distant and calculating.
Work/money: Solution to monetary difficulties, assets, gain,
beneficial business associations. 
Places and things: Insurance company, bank, safe box, jewelry
box, wallet, valuable objects (in terms of material worth and
sentimentally as well).
Timing: The past.
Advice: Save, don’t spend it all; cherish what you consider
valuable; make a personal budget.
Affirmations:
-My personal abundance makes me happy.
-I enjoy what I have rightfully earned.
Health: Fitness, a private practice.
Reversed: Big bills and expenses, a shopping spree, not saving
or not having enough money.

Direction: The man depicted on this card is sitting and looking
toward the left, suggesting that he is engrossed in his own thoughts
and theories, or the information at hand.
Meanings: Gaining or sharing wisdom, intellectual work,
beneficial information, studying, researching, creating art, correcting
reports or grading assignments, etc.
In my experience: Reading books, writing letters or long emails.
In a spread: Usually positive, but it is very influenced by its
surrounding cards −taking on their attributes (be it positive or
negative).
People: Professor, scientist, advisor, editor, cultured, someone
very skilled (an expert), introverted, private, educated and well-
mannered.
Work/money: Projects continue to develop, some money coming
from a loved one.
Places and things: Library, a study, school, bookstore, books
(including eBooks), journal, notebook.
Advice: Investigate, get to know the facts; study, learn, inform
yourself; read more; further your education; teach what you know.
Affirmations:
-I enjoy learning new things.
-I love helping others by teaching them what I know.
-I am curious about new things.

Health: The memory. A psychologist.
Reversed: Ignorance, lack of information, rudeness,
incompetence, absence of intellectual activity.

Costanza + Letterato: Willingly working in a relationship on an
ongoing basis (as in, “marriage takes work”).
Letterato/ Artista + Pensiero: Having important ideas and
thoughts regarding one’s job.

Type of card: Mood
Keywords: Relief
Direction:
Gypsy Oracle card: The lady shown on this card is clearly
engrossed in the present moment (looking straight out from the
card). Her situation is favorable because the worse, the shipwreck, is
over and she is now on firm land.
Vera Sibilla card: This lady is looking at a winged lion (sign of
strength), which is painted on a rock nearby and is located on the
right of the card (the future). The image suggests optimism drawn
from inner strength.
Meanings: Success, reasons to be hopeful, resolution of issues,
physical attraction.
In my experience: Things work out all right. Positive thinking is
very powerful towards the resolution of a situation.

the end of relationship during a period of time in which the people
involved slowly drift away from one another).
In my experience: We are usually aware of the end or
transformation that is taking place.
In a spread: When asking a “yes or no” question, if this card
shows up at the end of the row (last card on the right) it most likely
means the answer is “no”. If cards with red suits are majority, it could
mean that what the inquirer is asking about will come to pass but will
not last.
People: Mortician, someone who is ill.
Work/money: Substantial changes taking place, could be
changing jobs, debts, going out of business.
Places and things: Funeral home, coffin, box, drawer.
Timing: Slowly.
Advice: Welcome the change that has already started;

In my experience: Waiting with anxiety.
In a spread: If it lands to the left end of a spread, it indicates that
the time of waiting is finally coming to an end.
People: Customs officer, border patrol agent, a foreigner, exotic.
Work/money: Waiting for an answer about a promotion, tasks
are tedious.
Places and things: A pier, ferry terminal, airport, train station.
Timing: The past. Delays. The waiting time of this card is longer
than that of Belvedere/Waiting.
Advice: Time will seem to go faster if you enjoy yourself while
you wait; give it some time; be patient.

and interferes with our plans secretly. Ill-intentioned, a backstabber.
In a love reading, this card could represent the “other man”.

enjoying the present moment by reflecting on something that is
about to happen in the near future.
One of his hands seems to be pointing toward the left, where
there is a building in the background (presumably a church).
Meanings: The law, rules, justice, responsibilities, legal affairs,
guidance, beliefs. Rarely, it can mean judgment.
In my experience: Our own principles and beliefs.
In a spread: This card brings a sense of fairness to any reading.
People: A priest, teacher, lawyer, someone who can provide
guidance and help, impartial, just, religious.

How to Read and Combine the
Cards
The interpretation of every card combination is based on the
context, which is provided by the person who is reading the cards.
Because different people carry out different day-to-day activities,
lifestyles, etc. the interpretations of the cards will likely differ from
one Sibilla reader to another.
In a reading, Sibilla cards are to be combined with each other’s
meanings. In short, the cards are interpreted by stringing them as if
telling a story (which means that they are hardly ever interpreted
only by their individual meanings).
The sequence in which each card shows up in a reading is
important, and the interpretation is based on respecting every card’s
position. Said sequence is organized from left to right, and that’s the
direction the cards are normally read in a spread.
Depending on the question being asked to the cards, sometimes
the card placed on the left end of a line represents the past, or the
cause of a situation. Likewise, the card located on the far right could
indicate likely outcomes in the future. This usually depends on the
context, given by the question pertaining to the reading.
To do a reading, it is important to decide what exactly is the
question to be asked (it is best to be as specific as possible), and to
choose the appropriate spread for that question or topic.
Let’s look at some examples. But first, from your Sibilla deck,
take the two cards I selected in the example below and place them in
front of you.

All the above combinations are possible for those two cards
drawn in that order. So, when combining the cards, it is useful to stay
true to the context of the reading and to pay attention to the
surrounding cards.
The interpretation of every spread depends on the context of the
reading, the cards drawn and their order of appearance.
For example, if I asked:
What was the outcome of my sister’s meeting at work last week?
Cards drawn:

The answer: A young woman (my sister!) was given a promotion.
It is crucial to be specific when formulating a question. Otherwise,
the reading could turn out confusing.
In every reading, it’s useful to narrow down the vast number of
keywords associated with the cards drawn, because by doing so we
are more likely to end up with a clear interpretation.
It is important to stay true to the field of the question being
asked. When asking a work-related question, considering the health-
related keywords will probably turn out in a confusing reading.
In some instances, the combination of two (or more) cards
together can lead to a one word or concept answer, which is the
result of fusing all the cards together (much like in the Lenormand
system).

The purpose of all the examples provided in this book is merely
to inspire the reader.
The interpretation of every card combination is based on the
context, which is provided by the person who is reading the cards.
Spreads
Three Card Spread
This is a useful spread for a simple question that requires a “yes”
or “no” answer, such as:
Will all my guests show up at the party next Friday?
After shuffling, three cards are selected and placed on the table
from left to right.
 
A general glance will show if the last card (the third one) is
positive, in which case the answer is “yes”, or negative, the answer
then being “no”. If the last card is a neutral one, the answer is still to
be determined.
Now it’s time to interpret the cards, combining their meanings
from left to right to obtain some information on “how” the answer will
come to pass.
Simple Method to Ask About Timing
This technique usually requires just one card.
If there is no timing associated with the card drawn, the time
frame that corresponds to its suit is used as a general indication.
Alternatively, the answer could be considered as, “still to be
determined” at that point.
Five Card Spread
This technique is very similar to the “Three Card Spread”, and it
can be used to gain information about the past, the present and the
future of a situation.After shuffling, five cards are selected and placed on the table
from left to right.
 
This layout can also be applied to gain insights into the cause of
an issue, its current state, and the likely outcome to it. Alternatively, it
can show the development of a situation.
The Month Ahead Spread
This layout provides a general overview of the upcoming month.
Nine cards are laid on the table from left to right, starting with
card number 1, as shown in the graphic below.
 
Each row of cards is read as a sentence. Cards 1, 2 and 3
being the first sentence.
Every column is read the same way. Starting with cards 1, 4 and
7, and so on.
The fifth card (center) represents the highlight of the month.
The Greek Cross Spread
This layout is great to gain clarity about a particular situation by
analyzing how it’s currently evolving.
After shuffling the cards thoroughly, five cards are drawn and laid
on the table forming a cross shape, as shown in the graphic below.
 
The row of cards 1, 2 and 3 indicate what is currently taking
place, and how it’s developing.
Card number 2 is the very heart of the question.
The column of cards 4, 2 and 5 show how things will continue
to develop in the near future.
The Custom Spread
The topics of this layout are customized by the card reader. Four
subjects of interest are picked. Anything goes! Life, finances, career,
a particular relationship, work, school, etc.
Cards 1 and 2 represent the first subject picked for this “mixed”
reading, cards 3 and 4 the topic that comes after that, and so on. It is
useful to write that down before shuffling the cards, so that there is
no confusion as to what set of cards represents what particular area.
The eight cards are laid on the table as shown in the following
graphic. I selected random examples (Job, Class, Social life and
Puffy) to illustrate.
 
The Birthday Spread
This is a fun birthday gift! This layout is focused on the positive
things that are coming for the birthday person in the year ahead.
Seven cards are drawn and laid on the table from left to right, as
shown in the following graphic.
 
Cards 1, 2 and 3 refer to positive things that the birthday person
is experiencing at the moment.
Cards 4 and 5 reflect positive experiences in the near future.
Approximately, within three to six months.
Cards 6 and 7 signify pleasant happenings in the more distant
future, before the next birthday.
A Spread with Different
Perspectives
This is a spread for readers who use Tarot, Lenormand or other
oracle systems. It’s an interesting layout that brings insights from

Three Sibilla cards are drawn, and then three cards from another
oracle system are drawn as well. They are placed on the table as
shown in the following graphic.
 
Each row of cards is first read by itself. The results of each group
of cards are then put together in context (considering the theme or
question of the reading). 
 
More Spreads
For tarot card readers, it’s fun to use tarot layouts with Sibilla
cards. To do this, it is best to select small spreads to use two or three
Sibilla cards for each position. For example, in a classic Celtic
spread (which is normally composed of ten positions), using three
Sibilla cards for each position would result in the use of thirty cards
total.
Significators
A Significator is a card chosen from the deck to represent the
consultant or the person being asked about. This card is usually a
person-card:

♥C13 ~Gran Signore/ The Lord
♣F 11 ~Domestico/ Service
♣F12 ~Giovine Fanciulla/ Young Woman

♦Q12 ~Donna Maritata/ Wife
♦Q13 ~Mercante/ Merchant
♠P11 ~Il Nemico/ Enemy

When inquiring about a child the card used as a significator is:
♦Q7 ~Bambino/ Child.
If the reading is about a pet, no matter what the species, the card
used as a significator is:
♥C9 ~ Fedeltà/ Faithfulness.
When using a significator, the card is removed from the deck and
is placed on the table where the reading will take place. This means
that only 51 Sibilla cards are shuffled.
Significators are usually chosen by their characteristics (general
age, physical appearance, personality, etc.).
Selecting a significator is not mandatory.
Moreover, when a card that could have been selected as a
significator comes up in a reading, I take it as a confirmation that the
cards are addressing the question at hand. 
Number Meanings
The number on the top right corner present on Vera Sibilla cards
identifies the playing card’s number (from 1, the aces to thirteen, the
Kings).
These numbers can provide useful information, especially when
they repeat themselves in a spread.
If your cards don’t show their playing card number, use the Quick
Reference Guide or The Lottery Numbers list offered in this book.
Just look for the name of the card and take note of its number, which
is located right next to its suit (Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts or Spades).
Number meanings:
1. A beginning, an opportunity, something just starting. 
2. Balance, free will, exchange.
3. Progress, development, expression.
4. Foundation, health, security.
5. Change, a challenge, movement.
6. Solutions, mental activity, responsibility.
7. Manifestation, rebirth, the inner world.
8. Skills, repetition, potential.
9. Attainment, integration, priorities. 
10. Discipline, adaptability, strength.
11. Projects.
12. Intuition.
13. Accomplishment.
The Suits
Vera Sibilla cards also have a reference to the playing card’s suit,
and it’s displayed on the top left corner of the card. This is the initial
letter of the name of the suit in Italian.
If your cards don’t show their playing card association, use the
Quick Reference Guide or The Lottery Numbers list offered in this
book. Just look for the name of the card and take note of its suit
(Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts or Spades).
 
C Stands for “Cuori”, the suit of Hearts ♥
 
F Represents “Fiori”, the suit of Clubs ♣
Q Is for “Quadri”, the suit of Diamonds ♦
P Means “Picche”, the suit of Spades ♠
 
The playing card suits provide general, but extra information and
they can be very helpful when trying to interpret the cards.
♥ C ~ Hearts: Emotional/sentimental wealth, good relationships,
interactions and feelings.
 
♣ F ~ Clubs: Achievement from active effort, movement, action
and agreeable changes.
 
♦ Q ~ Diamonds: Prosperity and pleasure, and all that relates to
them −good and bad.
 
♠ P ~ Spades: Uncomfortable thoughts and strict belief systems.
Troublesome changes, people and events.
 
The Suits’ Time Frames
It is worth to note that the cards rarely predict accurate timings.
What and when something will happen is dependent on our own
decisions.
Nevertheless, there are time frames associated with most cards.
This information is found in the page that describes every card
respectively.
Some cards don’t have a period of time linked to them. When
these cards come up, it can be helpful to use the time frame that
corresponds to their playing card suit.
♣ F ~ Clubs: Because this suit is active, their timing is rather
quick: Hours to days.
♦ Q ~ Diamonds: It takes time to manifest in the material world,
hence: Days to weeks.
♥ C ~ Hearts: Emotions flow like water, which is closely linked to
the lunar cycles (ebbing and flowing). That’s the reason why this
suit’s time frame is: Weeks to a month.
♠ P ~ Spades: This suit is characterized by delays, obstacles and
setbacks. Consequently, the time it represents is: Months to years.
Sibilla Cards’ Interactions
When taking a first look at a spread, it is useful to notice the
rating (positive, neutral or negative) of the cards present. Moreover,
considering the majority of cards with a certain rating that showed up
in a layout gives an initial overview of the tone of the reading in
general.
By paying attention to the suits present in a spread it is possible
to obtain clues as to what thegeneral feel is.
The suit of ♥ C ~ Hearts represents good feelings and thoughts.
The suit of ♣ F ~ Clubs is about positive events and activities.
The suit of ♦ Q ~ Diamonds refers to either good or bad
influences over the material world.
The suit of ♠ P ~ Spades depicts negative feelings and
thoughts.
