A TASTE OF BRAZIL

 Brazilian food is like Brazil itself. It’s a rich of mixture of many things from many places. Some dishes 
are like Portuguese dishes. That is because many Portuguese people went to live in Brazil. Other dishes are not 
like any European dishes. The flavors are special to Brazil. 
 Brazilian cooks are lucky. They can get excellent fish from the ocean. They can get good meat from 
farms. And they can get all kinds of tropical fruits and vegetables. These fruits and vegetables give Brazilian 
dishes their special, delicious taste. 
 Brazil is a large country. Each area has its own history and traditions, and so each area also has its own 
way of cooking. If you are in Rio de Janeiro, for example, you should try the “feijoada”. It is a very rich mixture 
of different meats with black beans. Brazilians usually eat it on the weekend. It’s not a dish to eat in a hurry! 
 After your meal, you must try Brazilian coffee – “cafezinho”. The Brazilians have a special little 
machine for making coffee, and their coffee is special, too. It’s not like American coffee or Italian coffee. It’s 
Brazilian, and it’s very good.

Joshua

instruments. 
Five days a week, Joshua goes to a school for Amish children. He sometimes goes into the city with his

Lives on a farm in Australia, 600 kilometers from the nearest town. Judy never goes to school because 
she learns from home.

television. ‘There are so many things to do on the farm’, says Judy. ‘I help my father every morning, but I 
sometimes watch TV in the evenings. I like soaps, for example.’ 
Judy sometimes talks to her teacher on the radio, but she hardly ever sees him. He comes to her house 
only once a year to help her with her school work.
