Present Continuous Simple Present
We use the continuous for things 
happening at or around the time of 
speaking. The action is not complete.
We use the simple present for things 
in general or things that happen 
repeated ly..

Look at those people. They’re dancing a 
lot!.
The water is boiling. Can you turn it off?
Believe it or not, they dance every single 
day..
Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius
We use the continuous for 
temporary situations..
We use the simple present for 
permanent situations..
I’m living with some friends until I find a 
place of my own.
My parents live in London. They have 
lived there all their lives.
Some verbs (for example know and like) are not normally used in the 
continuous form. We don’t say “I am knowing” or “They are liking”; we 
say “I know”, “I like”
