PLAGIARISM: You must compose your answers in your own words. Simply pasting text from the
Internet OR the APC workbook may result in a failing grade. It is better to write your own thoughts
in your own words – even if your English is not perfect – rather than copy word-for-word the
thoughts of someone else.
SUBMITTING IDENTICAL ANSWERS: You may discuss your assessments with other students,
but submitting identical answers to other students may result in a failing grade. Your answers
must be yours alone.
TUTORIALS: Tutorials are run every week to help you answer the assessments. The schedule
for tutorials will be announced during the first week of term. You are urged to attend the tutorial
that pertains to your online subject.

Advanced Teamwork – Assessment 1

Part A

1. How would you ensure that relations with customers and clients demonstrate that diversity is
valued by your business?

Most companies are proud of their diverse employees and are often made up of individuals with such
distinct characteristics and experiences. Some examples of these characteristics of diversity are
race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, ability, and sexual orientation. If you hire people with different
backgrounds and who speak several languages, those people who have different ideas on the same
subject and a varied variety of skills would demonstrate that diversity is valued by the company, in
addition the success of the team and the company will be enormous.

2. What diversity issues do you think are relevant to modern Australian society?

I believe that diversity generates discrimination based on race and culture, violence against women,
stereotypes. Often without realizing it, we have a "mentality" about how things should be, which we
learn from the culture in which we grew up. This "mentality" affects many people if the opinion is not
said correctly.

3. How do the following assist an organisation in developing a diversity policy?

a. Anti-discrimination legislation

It is applicable by law and must be complied with. The Anti-Discrimination Law promotes equal
opportunities for all, protecting them from unfair discrimination in certain areas of activity and sexual
harassment.

b. Ethical principles

They are the moral values by which an organization and its employees are governed. Ethical
principles help the organization to identify and resolve ethical problems that may arise. They are
designed to guide you in dealing with other people, whether they are customers, co-workers,
suppliers, etc.

c. Practice Codes

The Code of Practice determines employees’ rights to be treated fairly in the workplace, ways to
resolve complaints or violations of policies and codes, and the legal and ethical obligations and
expectations of all employees to act in accordance with standards expressed in conduct, integrity
and responsibility contained in the relevant legislation, labour policies and agreements.

d. Privacy Laws

Many of the companies with business transactions depend on the use of their customers' personal
information. When your company collects and uses personal information, you must protect and
respect your customers' privacy. Respecting privacy helps to attract customers. The Privacy Act
establishes rules on the handling of information, including how the organization can collect, use,
store and disclose personal information.

e. Health and safety at work

This law aims to protect the health and safety of everyone in the workplace, while carrying out work
activities or using specified high-risk facilities. As an employer, there are standards that must be
respected, such as: providing and maintaining a safe workplace, developing and monitoring
procedures for the use, handling, storage and transportation of goods and substances, maintaining
the workplace in a safe and healthy manner, etc.

f. Disability law

This law can protect everyone from discrimination based on disability. It ensures that people with
disabilities have the same opportunities to access employment, as do other members of the
community who are not disabled. The legislation also covers persons with disabilities, their family
friends, against the law.

Part B

1. What are the top 5 major groups in Australia as defined by:

a. Cultural background (where have they come from): Australia, United Kingdom, New Zealand,
China and India.

b. Religion: Christianity, Buddhism, Islamism, Hinduism and Judaism.

2. What is the value of diversity to the economy and society in terms of:

a. The workforce operating today behind all businesses and organizations remains the asset
available to create a competitive advantage: a diverse workforce can generate greater innovation
and, ultimately, business growth.

B. Cultural diversity has the capacity to produce jobs and thus connect us with the rest of the world
and can be used as a great resource. Australia is a model country on the issue of global diversity.

c. Diversity creates a diverse environment, in which people can create different ideas and develop
new ideas and products, to keep the market competitive.

d. Social justice promotes a just society as the name implies, challenging injustice and valuing
diversity. The government defines a socially just Australia as one in which there is a fair distribution
of resources; equal access to essential services, such as housing, health care and education; equal
rights in civil and civil legal matters.

Part C

1. Describe what kind of diversity is evident at Australia Post.

The diversity that has been identified is in relation to culture and language.

2. How did Australia Post respond to the differences in individuals employed by the organisation?

Australia Post innovated by developing a system using its own diverse workforce. They sought to listen
carefully to the team's feedback and thus produced excellent results for the new initiative.

3. Describe the innovation that has been made possible by Australia Post staff contributions
because of their individual differences. What type of innovation is the “Language Assist” program?

The Australia Post spent a certain amount on very expensive external interpreter services and
developed a training program for staff and thus helping themselves with an added bonus, very little
training and changing the organization's infrastructure was possible to implement the process and
this was considered an evolutionary innovation.

4. What are the benefits to Australia Post from the innovation and the innovative team discussed
in this case study?

The benefits for the Australia Post of the innovation and the innovative team discussed in this case
study were financial, team interaction and team commitment.

5. What are some of the factors, internal and external, that have contributed to the Australia Post
Team being innovative and remaining innovative?

The internal and external factors that contributed to Australia's Post Office team being innovative
and remaining innovative are problems with commitment to teamwork, multilingual communication
and cost reduction.
