TO BE ABLE TO DO SOMETHING
Dialog: “Roger won’t be ab le to join us today.”
"To be able to do something" is a modal verb structure that means the same thing as can or could. It
can be used to express ability or opportunity and to show possibility or impossibility.
FORM: TO BE + ABLE + TO + VERB (infinitive)
• I wasn’t able to complete the report in time.
• Weren’t you able to contact him yesterday?
• They think they`ll be able to fix the engine by tomorrow.

TO MANAGE TO DO SOMETHING
Dialog: “…He managed to send over the latest production figures”
We generally use "to manage to do something" when talking about what happens in a particular
situation or when referring to a specific achievement, or when we want to talk about success in
something, usually after overcoming some difficulty.
FORM: MANAGE + TO + VERB (infinitive)
• It took a while but the chairman managed to end the meeting on time.
• I’ll manage. Just get back before my food supply runs out.
• Did the police manage to find the fugitives?

TO SUCCEED IN DOING SOMETHING
Dialog: “Rachel has succeeded in pulling together a briefing”
We use "to succeed in doing something" when talking about having success in a certain situation or
event. In this case, there is no probability, only success. The negative to not succeed in doing
something means that something failed.
FORM: SUCCEED IN + VERB (-ING form)
• The doctor succeeded in correctly diagnosing his illness.
• Our parents didn’t succeed in reconciling their differences and they got a divorce.
• Will the army succeed in holding back Al-Qaeda operatives?

Observation: This structure is very formal and is rarely used in spoken English, but is common in
written texts or more formal situations, such as business meetings!
