Nível Avançado › Business Meeting 1 Diálogo Vocabulário Gramática Laboratório Exercícios TO BE ABLE TO DO SOMETHING Dialog: “Roger won’t be ab le to join us today.” "To be able to do something" is a modal verb structure that means the same thing as can or could. It can be used to express ability or opportunity and to show possibility or impossibility. FORM: TO BE + ABLE + TO + VERB (infinitive) • I wasn’t able to complete the report in time. • Weren’t you able to contact him yesterday? • They think they`ll be able to fix the engine by tomorrow. TO MANAGE TO DO SOMETHING Dialog: “…He managed to send over the latest production figures” We generally use "to manage to do something" when talking about what happens in a particular situation or when referring to a specific achievement, or when we want to talk about success in something, usually after overcoming some difficulty. FORM: MANAGE + TO + VERB (infinitive) • It took a while but the chairman managed to end the meeting on time. • I’ll manage. Just get back before my food supply runs out. • Did the police manage to find the fugitives? TO SUCCEED IN DOING SOMETHING Dialog: “Rachel has succeeded in pulling together a briefing” We use "to succeed in doing something" when talking about having success in a certain situation or event. In this case, there is no probability, only success. The negative to not succeed in doing something means that something failed. FORM: SUCCEED IN + VERB (-ING form) • The doctor succeeded in correctly diagnosing his illness. • Our parents didn’t succeed in reconciling their differences and they got a divorce. • Will the army succeed in holding back Al-Qaeda operatives? Observation: This structure is very formal and is rarely used in spoken English, but is common in written texts or more formal situations, such as business meetings!
