A present participle clause is a clause that begins with a verb in the -ing form. We use these clauses to give information about timing, causes, and results of events. When paired with "by" it indicates "the method or means used". When paired with the preposition "in" the clause indicates "cause". When paired with "on" the clause indicates "when". 1) PRESENT PARTICIPLE CLAUSE WITH "BY" By keeping your bedroom cool at night you'll be able to get a better night's rest. (keeping the room cool is the method used) Patricia was finally able to get some work done by putting her kids to bed early. (putting the kids to bed was the method used) 2) PRESENT PARTICIPLE CLAUSE WITH "IN" In keeping with tradition the family spent Easter Sunday feeding the poor.
