Why is it important for people to know current events?
Increasingly, issues become more and more complicated. Take the environment, for example. Should we address global warming through reduced carbon emissions or carbon absorption protocols? Should we reduce emissions through reduced energy consumption or through increased alternate power generation? What kind of national and global long-term fossil fuel management strategy do we need to wean ourselves from oil as we gradually deplete the world's reserves?

This is just one issue, and we haven't even scratched the surface of it. There are thousands more issues as complicated and as massive as this one, such as health care, foreign relations, trade subsidies, abortion, intelligent design... There are four cornerstones in a democracy:
The right to speak and associate freely;
The right to access information without unnecessary government control and censorship, including freedom of the press, and now freedom of the Internet;
Honest, stable, and effective legislative, administrative, judicial, and security infrastructures; and
The right to vote freely

In a democracy, we have the privilege to enjoy these cornerstones. But democracy is not free - it requires informed citizens. Let me answer your question with a question: How can you ever hope to cast a meaningful ballot in an election if you cannot begin to understand the simplest and most basic of current events surrounding these and other important issues?

As citizens, we are expected to vote in favor of the candidate and/or party that we believe will best protect and improve these cornerstones for the benefit of ourselves and for our communities. Educating ourselves about what goes on around us is the only way we can formulate such an informed position. Following current events is the price we must each pay to sustain a thriving democracy. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Why_is_it_important_for_people_to_know_current_events

All of us must be aware of the things that happening around us. Being informed about the current event will give us knowledge on how things work around the world and help us decide which path we shall take for journey. As what you have noticed, several news updates have become a big deal to the people around the world. Just like the North Korea's plan to lunch a rocket. Admit it or not, all of us were affected by the news. Current events serve as our guide for us to find out the things that we must do and we should have done. Discussing current events makes us informed and be an involved citizen. Moreover, we will better understand people and how they relate to one another.

Here are some reasons why you should stay informed on current events and global issues impacting the world we live in today:
To be part of the global community
Globalization is a reality! There is no choice but to be part of the world rather than stand alone. It’s more important now to “connect the dots in what’s becoming a very small world.”
To build informed opinions
Gaining knowledge in world affairs and current events allows you to decide where you fall on key issues impacting your city, region and country. It also provides you the ability to influence legislators in a meaningful and thoughtful way.

To spark engaging discussion
Enjoy healthy debates or discussions with friends, colleagues and community groups to increase their knowledge (and yours) about issues like poverty, hunger, war and conflict, foreign policy and the world economy.  Growing awareness is often built on these types of conversations!

To enhance your employment opportunities
Competition from professionals in the global market place is growing. It’s increasingly vital to set yourself apart from your peers by displaying a broad understanding of international affairs and current events.
To learn about cultures outside of your own
You’re likely to find people from many different countries in your home, school or work places with the influx of immigrants into the United States. By keeping up-to-date with current events, you have the opportunity to change your views on cultural stereotypes (if any) and learn about what’s happening and what matters to the international communities in your respective towns and cities.

To prepare for travel
Being informed about a country before a visit can decrease unexpected “surprises” and travel mishaps (i.e. basic safety procedures.) In addition, keeping up with the news also allows you to get to know the country, people and cultures that you will encounter during your travels abroad.

But…and what’s the difference between “news” and “current events”?
News is different from current events because not all current events make it to the news. For a current event to become News, someone or a reporter must have taken interest in the spread of such event. If not a current event may occur without ever getting into the news until later in the future. In the same way, not all news item are current events. A person may be interested in an old story. Digging up age long information about remarkable stories becomes news. So an event need not be a current event before it becomes news

When you are talking about news or current events, you may need to ask questions and seek clarifications. Let’s see some ways of doing it, shall we?
English typically uses a number of polite introductory phrases before a question is asked. This is because it can be considered impolite, or too direct, to state something without some kind of introduction to the question.

The newspaper is a powerful medium.  It is powerful because it has the ability to influence the way that people view the world, as well as their opinion of what they see.  In peaceful times (or in times of oppression, for sometimes they can appear to be happening at the same moment) the press is  usually one of the instruments used by the state in order to maintain the status quo.

However, during times of political unrest it is often the press who becomes the major antagonist
in the fight against the government. Why is this so?  Why does the press get so deeply involved in, not just  the reporting of, but the instigating and propagating of political change?  In  order to properly answer this question there are several other key ideas and  questions which must first be examined.

According to research by the British Council , "English has official* or special status in at least seventy-five countries with a total population of over two billion. Speakers of English as a second language will soon outnumber those who speak it as a first language. Around 750 million people are believed to speak English as a foreign language*.

The cross-cultural spread of English is unprecedented in other ways. It is more widely used than any of the other colonial languages like French, Portuguese or Spanish. It even has a wider use than some of the languages associated with international non-Western religious traditions, like Arabic or Sanskrit. In countries like India and Nigeria, English is used at all levels of society: in local English- language newspapers and broadcasting, in public administration, in university education, in the major industries, the courts and the civil service. Indeed, with nearly 200 languages, India needs English to unify the country. Professor Lal, a champion of Indian English claims that in simple numerical terms, in a country of 840 million, “more Indians speak English and write English than in England itself ...”
