A bacterial infection that can cause serious illness in pregnant women and newborns. It is a diplococcus gram positive, aerobio that typically produces beta hemolysis and is divided into 10 serotypes based on specific carbohydrates in its cell wall. It is one of the main causes of perinatal bacterial infections, including bacteremia, endometritis, corioamnionitis and urinary tract infections in women and systemic and focal infections from birth to 3 months of age or older. It is a virus that can be transmitted through the air and causes respiratory infections.
