What are the characteristics of the different types of E. coli associated with diarrhea?
ETEC secretes enterotoxins that produce a secretory diarrhea. EIEC is similar to Shigella and is capable of invading the intestinal epithelium, producing inflammatory reaction and dysentery. EPEC adheres to the intestinal mucosa producing flattening of the villi and inflammatory changes. STEC adheres to the intestinal epithelium and produces one or more Shiga toxins (Stx1, Stx2).
