What are the diagnostic tests and treatments for acute liver failure in small animals?
The most common clinical signs of acute liver failure are vomiting, diarrhea, and acute lethargy. The biochemical profile usually shows a significant increase in ALT, PA, and GGT enzymes, as well as hyperbilirubinemia, hyperammonemia, decreased BUN, hypoalbuminemia, and increased pre- and postprandial bile acids. Fluid therapy should avoid lactate-containing fluids and should be complemented with glucose, with glucose levels monitored every 12 hours. Antibiotic therapy should be administered until the results of different tests are obtained, with a broad-spectrum coverage of ampicillin and enrofloxacin. The definitive diagnosis can only be made by liver biopsy.
