What is the correct treatment for Babesia gibsoni in small animals?
The treatment includes autovaccine plus azithromycin if the previous treatment is not effective. The dose for the autovaccine is 13.5 mg/kg PO every 8 hours. Azithromycin should be administered at a dose of 10 mg/kg every 24 hours PO for 10 days. The response to treatment is usually more effective in patients with B. canis. The diagnosis is made by administering the Coombs test and then prednisone at a dose of 1.1-2.2 mg/kg every 12 hours. Its use should be progressively reduced until controlling parasitemia and immune response.
