Normalmente utilizados esta estrutura 
por alguns motivos:
 Para enfatizar a ação, e não quem a praticou;
 Para termos a possibilidade de omitir o autor da 
ação;
 Quando não sabemos quem é o autor da ação;
 Quando o autor da ação não é importante;
 Quando queremos utilizar um tom mais 
impessoal.
O uso é comum em artigos acadêmicos e 
noticiários
Passive Voice
PASSIVE VOICE
 The passive voice is used to give emphasis in the 
person or object that receives an action. The most 
important thing or person becomes the subject of 
the sentence.
FORM
 Present simple: Am/is/are + past participle
 Past simple: Was/were + past participle
 Present Perfect: Have been/has been + past 
participle
 Future: Will be + past participle
 A lot of people play soccer all over the world.
ACTIVE VOICE
 Soccer is played all over the world by a lot of
people.
PASSIVE VOICE
 Scientists produce new flu vaccines
each year
ACTIVE VOICE
 New flu vaccines are produced by
scientists each year.
PASSIVE VOICE
Leonardo Da Vinci painted the “Mona 
Lisa” between 1503 and 1506.
ACTIVE VOICE
The “Mona Lisa” was painted by Leonardo 
Da Vinci between 1503 and 1506.
PASSIVE VOICE
