Substantivos (Nouns) Fonte: www.usatoday.com1 s substantivos em inglês classi- ficam–se em: contáveis, incon- táveis, concretos e abstratos. Os substantivos se modificam em inglês para fazer o plural dos mesmos e para demonstrar posse. Os gêneros dos substantivos em inglês podem ser classificados em quatro: masculino, feminino, neutro e comum. a) Substantivos contáveis: São normalmente concretos, podem ser contatos e têm plural; Exemplo: a box, four boxes. There are twenty-five comput- ers in the computer room. Singular + ES: Os substantivos terminados em O, X, CH, SH, S, SS, e Z fazem o plural em –ES. Exemplos: Potato – potatoes Fox – foxes Watch – watches Brush – brushes Bus – buses Boss – bosses Waltz – waltzes Não seguem a regra os subs- tantivos terminados em –CH que têm na pronúncia o som final de K. Exemplos: Patriarch – patriarchs Monarch - monarchs Epoch – epochs Stomach – stomachs Também não seguem a regra os substantivos terminados em – O precedidos de vogal, eles formam o plural em –S. Exemplos: Bamboo – bamboos Studio – studios Os substantivos considerados estrangeiros também recebem ape- nas o –S para formar o plural. Singular terminado em Y: Os substantivos terminados em Y precedidos de vogal formam o plural com –S. Singular/Plural Irregu- lares: No inglês não existem muitos plurais irregulares, abaixo seguem alguns exemplos. Exemplos: Tooth – teeth Foot – feet Goose – geese Louse – lice Mouse – mice Man – men Woman – women Child – children Ox – oxen 7. Singular/Plural com a mesma forma: Alguns substantivos em inglês têm a mesma forma tanto para o sin- gular como para o plural. Singular Composto: Quando a forma é: substantivo + substantivo vai para o plural o ele- mento principal. Exemplos: Sister-in-law – sisters-in-law Son-in-law – sons-in-laws Armchair – armchairs Toothbrush – toothbrushes Quando a forma é adjetivo + substantivo só o substantivo vai para o plural. Exemplos: Blackbird – blackbirds Whiteboard – whiteboards 9. Formas Plurais: Alguns substantivos em inglês são mais utilizados na forma do plu- ral. Alguns deles estão relaciona- dos abaixo em categorias diferentes. Exemplos: Jogos (games): cards, domi- noes, darts, bowls. Vestuário (clothing): jeans, pyjamas, trousers, trunks, dungarees, clothes. o Fer- ramentas/Equipamentos (tools/equipment): pliers, scissors, glasses, handcuffs. Matérias/atividades (sub- jects/activities): maths, phys- ics, economics, politics, athlet- ics, aerobics. Outros (others): thanks, stairs, remains, goods, news, wherea- bouts, proceeds. d) Possessive case ou Genitive case: Para indicarmos uma relação de posse entre dois substantivos em inglês utilizamos o Caso Possessivo ou Caso Genitivo („S ou „) e também a construção: substantivo + OF + substantivo. 1. Caso Possessivo („S): É normalmente utilizado para os substantivos no singular e quando o primeiro substantivo é uma pessoa ou animal. Exemplos: Peter – Peter‟s: Peter’s houseis great. Janeth – Janeth‟s: Janeth’s car is pink. Policeman – policeman‟s: a policeman’s uniform is usually blue. Horse – horse‟s: The horse’s tail is very long. a) É também utilizado com nomes próprios terminados em S; Exemplos: Charles – Charles‟s: Charles’s dog is cute. Children – children‟s: The children’s toys are in the box. 2. Caso Possessivo („): a) É utilizado com substan- tivos no plural terminados em S. Exemplos: Girls – girl‟: The girls’ teacher is very professional. Boys – boy‟: The boys’ father is angry. b) Usa-se também com no- mes próprios clássicos ou famosos, terminados em S; Exemplos: Prince Charles- Prince Charles‟: Prince Charles’ wife is Camilla. Pitagoras – Pitagoras‟: We are studying Pitagoras’ theorems. c) E também com nomes próprios terminados em S seguidos de substantivo iniciado por S. Exemplos: Mr. Evans: Mr. Evans’ shoes are brown. Lewis: Lewis’ salary is not good at the moment. 3. Caso Possessivo (sustan- tivo + of + substantivo): Usamos a construção substan- tivo + of + substantivo quando que- remos especificar o primeiro subs- tantivo ou quando estão envolvidos na posse duas coisas e não há envol- vimento de pessoas. Exemplos: Salvador/Church: The central church of Salvador is very large. President/Chile: The Presi- dent of Chile is very popular. e) Gênero dos substantivos: 1. Masculino: substantivos que se referem a pessoas ou animais do sexo masculino. Exemplos: Man, boy, cat, dog. 2. Feminino: substantivos que se referem a pessoas ou animais do sexo feminino. Exemplos: Woman, girl, cow, bee. 3. Neutro: substantivos que se referem à coisas inanimadas. Exemplos: School, house, book, party. 4. Artigos (Articles) Os artigos em inglês são classi- ficados em dois tipos: The – Artigo definido (o/ os/ a/ as) o A/AN – Artigos indefinidos (um/ uma) a) Artigo definido – The O artigo definido “the” é usado tanto no singular como no plural e significa o/ a/ os/ as. The elephants are in the zoo for treatment. Usos específicos do artigo THE: 1. Antes de substantivo no plural em sentido restrito: Exemplos: The Brazilians were brilliant during the games in Rio. My mother is a nurse. Antes de substantivos inicia- dos por vogal usamos AN: Exemplos: I always have an egg for break- fast. My niece is an artist. Demonstrativos (Demonstra- tives) Os demonstrativos em inglês são usados para se referir a pessoas ou coisas que já são conhecidas. São eles: This/That – Singular (esse/essa; aquele/ aquela) o These/those – Plural (es- ses/essas; aqueles/aquelas) a) This/That – Singular: São usados para indicar dis- tância e tempo: perto e longe. This – Perto Exemplos: This is my computer. I prefer this blouse. I’m visiting my parents this weekend. I bought a new car this month. That – Longe Exemplos: That girl is looking at me. I’m going to buy that hat. Do you remember that teacher? I went to that shop in 1994. b) These/Those – Plural: São também usados para indi- car distância e tempo: perto e longe. A lot of (vários, várias) – A lot of the conference is in Spanish. Most (a maioria) – I stayed in bed most of the weekend. Each (cada) – Each person has some thing special. All (todo, toda) – All the prob- lem was the raining during my vacation. b) Quantifier – Plural: Exemplos: Few (poucos, poucas) – There are few people who trust you. Half (metade) – She did only half of the tasks. Some (alguns, algumas) – I took some coins from my brother. Several (muitos, muitas) – Several episodes are about crime in USA. A lot of (vários, várias) – Mary had a lot of ideas about the show. Many (muitos, muitas) – There are many watches on the counter. Most (a maioria) – Most of the oranges in the basket are not good. He is younger than his wife. Tiradentes is colder than Ipat- inga. The t-shirt is cheaper than the sweater. b) Para os adjetivos com uma ou duas sílabas terminados em consoante/vogal/consoante, a úl- tima consoante deverá ser dobrada: Exemplos: (big, hot, thin) My flat is bigger than my brother’s. This summer is hotter than last summer. Paris is considered the most beautiful city in Europe. This coat is the most expensive that I have ever bought. This exercise is the most diffi- cult one. 3. Irregular Exemplos: (bad, good, far, old) The weather last year was the worst during our holidays. A hamburger is the best sand- wich in that restaurant. Japan is the furthest country to visit. Nesse tempo o mais importante é o resul- tado da ação e não a ação propria- mente. Present Perfect Contínuo (Present Perfect Continu- ous) O Present Perfect Contínuo em inglês também é usado para descre- ver ações no passado em um tempo indeterminado e ações que aconte- ceram no passado e ainda conti- nuam acontecendo no presente onde a ação é o mais importante e não o resultado da mesma. O Present Perfect Contínuo em inglês é formado da seguinte ma- neira: Sujeito + have/has + been + verbo principal + -ing Exemplos: Samuel has been waiting for her for over 2 hours. O Past Perfect em inglês é for- mado da seguinte maneira: Sujeito + had + particípio pas- sado do verbo (past participle) Normalmente usamos as ex- pressões: WHEN, WHILE, AS SOON AS, UNTIL, BEFORE, AF- TER, AS LONG AS, WHENEVER para fazer o Past Perfect. Exemplos: When you phoned, I had al- ready received the news. (Quando você telefonou, eu já havia recebido a notícia.) The movie had begun by the time we arrived to the theather. (O flime já havia começado, quando chegamos ao cinema.) When you invited me to the party, I had already set an- other appointment. (negativa) Futuro Próximo (Near Fu- ture): O Futuro próximo em inglês é usado para expressar uma previsão de algo, especialmente se houver evidências no presente que justifi- quem essa previsão. O Futuro Simples em inglês é formado da seguinte maneira: Sujeito + verbo to be + going to+ verbo principal Exemplos: She is going to travel tomor- row. I am going to get married in September. Paul and Sue are going to see the opera on Sunday. Forma Interrogativa do Near Future: Para fazermos a forma interro- gativa no futuro próximo basta colo- carmos o verbo TO Be antes do su- jeito da frase. (afirmativa) Tina is not (isn’t) going to sell her car next week. (negativa) 5. Verbos Modais (Modal verbs) Os verbos modais ou anôma- los, como também são chamados, possuem características que lhes são próprias e que os diferenciam dos outros verbos. São características dos verbos modais: eles funcionam como ver- bos auxiliaries, não têm TO em seu infinitive e não recebem –s na 3ª pessoa do singular. Os verbos modais podem ex- pressar: habilidade, possibilidade, permissão, proibição, obrigação e sugestão. a) Verbo Can: O verbo Can é usado para ex- pressar habilidade e significa poder. Exemplos: Ellen can play the violin very well. (Ellen toca violino muito bem) They can swim fast. (Eles nadam rapidamente) He can repair this piano. (Ele consegue consertar esse pi- ano) Forma Interrogativa do verbo CAN: A forma interrogativa é feita pela inversão do verbo can na frase. Exemplos: Mona can speak English very well. (afirmativa) Can Mona speak English very well? (interrogativa) They can play chess very eas- ily. (afirmativa) Can they play chess very eas- ily? Exemplos: She could sail boats when she was young. Mark and Brian could play football whwn they were at school. b) Verbo May: O verbo May é usado para ex- pressar permissão, proibição e pos- sibilidade. Exemplos: Excuse-me, may I come in? (Com licença. Posso entrar?) Children may not play here. (Crianças não podem brincar aqui) George may come tomorrow. (George deve vir amanhã) Forma Interrogativa do verbo MAY: A forma interrogativa é feita pela inversão do verbo MAY na frase. Exemplos: The secretary may buy the tickets. (afirmativa) May the secretary buy the tick- ets? (interrogativa) They may help us with the ex- ercise. (afirmativa) May they help us with the ex- ercise? (interrogativa) Forma Negativa do verbo MAY: A forma negativa é feita pelo acréscimo da partícula NOT depois do verbo may. Exemplos: The secretary may buy the tickets. (Mr. Parker deve estar de volta amanhã) Forma Interrogativa do verbo MIGHT: A forma interrogativa deste verbo não é muito utilizada, já que se trata de pequenas possibilidades. (Interrogativa/negativa) (Não é provável que ela tenha lhe contado uma mentira?) Forma Negativa do verbo MIGHT: A forma negativa é feita pelo acréscimo da partícula NOT depois do verbo might. Exemplos: Sally might be sleeping now. (afirmativa) Sally might not (mightn’t) be sleeping now. (negativa) Tom might go out tomorrw. (afirmativa) Tom might not (mightn’t) go out tomorrow. (negativa) d) Verbo MUST: O verbo Must é usado para ex- pressar obrigação. Exemplos: You must clean the house to- day. (Você precisa limpar a casa hoje) Students must study hard eve- ryday. (Alunos precisam estudar muito todos os dias) She must arrive early on Fri- day. (Ela precisa chegar cedo na sexta-feira) Forma Interrogativa do verbo MUST: A forma interrogativa do verbo must não é muito utilizada no inglês, já que se trata de obrigações e elas normalmente são sugeridas e não questionadas. Forma Negativa do verbo MUST: A forma negativa deste verbo expressa um sentido de proibição. Exemplos: You must not (musn’t) touch that cake. It’s hot! (Não toque naquele bolo, ele está quente) You must not (musn’t) smoke in here. (Você não pode fumar aqui) e) Verbo Should: O verbo Should é usado para fazer sugestão, dar um conselho. Nesse caso não existe o sentido de obrigatoriedade. Exemplos: People should be more re- laxed. Life is good! (As pessoa deveriam ser mais relaxadas, a vida é boa!) You should stop smoking. It’s not good! (Você deveria parar de fumar, isso não é bom!) Forma Interrogativa do verbo SHOULD: 55 MORFOSSINTAXE DA LÍNGUA INGLESA A forma interrogativa desse verbo não é muito utilizada, já que se trata de sugestões. A forma mais comum utilizada neste caso é a interrogativa/nega- tiva. Exemplos: Shouldn’t you take this medi- cine? (Você não deveria tomar esse remédio?) Shouldn’t you be studying now? (Você não deveria estar estu- dando agora?) Forma Negativa do verbo SHOULD: A forma negativa é feita pelo acréscimo da partícula NOT depois do verbo should. Exemplos: You should speak to your fa- ther like that. (afirmativa) You should not (shouldn’t) speak to your father like that. (negativa) They should buy a new car (afirmativa) They should not (shouldn’t) buy a new car. (negativa) f) Verbo Ought to O verbo Ought to também é usado para fazer sugestão, dar um conselho, não existindo também o sentido de obrigatoriedade. Os con- selhos e sugestões têm, nesse caso, um sentido mais moral. Exemplos: Children ought to go to be early. (As crianças deveriam ir dor- mir cedo) People ought to be more polite in traffic. (As pessoa deveriam ser mais educadas no trânsito) As formas interogativa e nega- tiva desse verbo não são muito utili- zadas em inglês. g) Verbo Have to: O verbo Have to é usado para expressar obrigação, com um sen- tido mais forte, mais impositivo que o verbo Must. Exemplos: You have to wear your sweater. You have a cold. (Você tem que vestir seu ca- saco, você está resfriado) They have to pay for the tick- ets. They are not free. (Eles têm que pagar pelos in- gressos, eles não são gratuitos) I have to go now. It’s too late.
