Tongue Twisters
Dear English Learner,
Get ready to speak confidently like an American English speaker! I recommend reading these
tongue twisters out loud and using the blank space on the last page to answer my challenge
question using the pronunciation. Thanks so much for learning English with me!
Your teacher,
Vanessa
L / R
Tip: The “L” sound is with your tongue sticking between your teeth (usually), the “R”
really uses the lips, almost like an angry dog growling.
1. How can a clam cram in a clean cream can?
2. A really leery Larry rolls readily to the road.
3. Lucky rabbits like to cause a ruckus.
Sample sentence: I’d really like to order the red one, but maybe the yellow one is
better?
S / SH
Tip: The “SH” sound is the same sound we use to help a baby sleep. Your teeth are
together and your lips are tighter than the “S” sound.
4. Susie works in a shoeshine shop. Where she shines she sits, and where she sits
she shines.
5. So, this is the sushi chef.
Note: The CH in “chef” makes the same sound as SH.

6. We surely shall see the sun shine soon.
Note: The S in “surely” makes the same sound as SH.
Sample sentence: She is sitting on a seashell shaped sofa.
W / R / L
Tip: Make the W sound by puckering your lips like a kiss.
7. Wayne went to Wales to watch walruses.
8. Lesser leather never weathered wetter weather better.
9. Whether the weather is warm, whether the weather is hot, we have to put up with
the weather, whether we like it or not.
Sample sentence: I would really like to take the red wagon on my walk.
Vowels
Tip: The mouth needs more room to properly form those vowel sounds, so open up
wiiiide and looong to get the best practice.
10. The great Greek grape growers grow great Greek grapes.
11. Many an anemone sees an enemy anemone.
Sample sentence: Can you tell me why this cake is green?

Th
Tip: To make this “TH” sound, stick your tongue out between your teeth and let a stream
of air flow out.
Note: There are two different pronunciations of TH. These tongue twisters focus on only
one type of TH pronunciation.
12.The three thousand thieves thought they took the throne this Thursday.
13. I thought I threw the thirty thrushes through the throng.
Sample sentence: I thought this Thursday was through already!
S / K / X
Tip: The S sound uses the teeth, the K sound is made in the middle, and the X sound is
a combination of those, like a KS.
14.The chic Sikh's sixty-sixth sheep is sick.
Note: The C in “chic” also has the hard K sound.
15.Six sick hicks nick six slick bricks with picks and sticks.
Sample sentence: I asked her for six stacks of cake, but she gave me sixteen cakes
instead!

Vanessa’s Challenge Question
Use the space below to write a few sentences answering this question: What do you
really want to do on Thursday?
Sample answer: Because I’m on vacation this week, I really want to eat sushi on
Thursday. Maybe my sixteen-year-old cousin will come with me if she’s not feeling sick.
Tip: Read your answer out loud to practice your American English pronunciation.
